Heavy Seas Takes Jab at Natty Boh

Looks like Heavy Seas will be the first brewery to fire at National Bohemian. The affectionately nicknamed Natty Boh hails from The Land of Pleasant Living, well at least it used to before they were bought by Pabst Brewing Company, and likes to boast being Baltimore’s ‘official’ beer since the 1960’s. Natty Boh has custom pounder cans featuring their one-eyed Mr. Boh in an Orioles uniform and proudly supports their former home city, but alas their beer is no longer brewed in Baltimore. Above we see a shirt from Heavy Seas, which shown by the shirt is actually brewed in Baltimore, taking a little jab at Mr. Boh. Could this be the beginning of a Baltimore beer battle? Will DuClaw join in the fun too? Will Mr. Boh ever find his other eye?

Heavy Seas Davy Jones’ Lager Cans Come in June

Another beer to add to your cans of summer lineup. Heavy Seas Davy Jones’ Lager cans should be hitting shelves in June 2013. This beer was once categorized as marooned and no longer going to be made by Heavy Seas. Its revival is a ‘steam’ beer that uses lager yeast fermented at ale temperatures creating a creamy smoothness with a malt body. This time around, the recipe was tweaked a little bit. Davy Jones is down to 6% instead of 7%. That might make a little difference in the sun. Go ahead a grab for that 4th can. Or 5th.

Style: Lager/California Common
Availability: 12oz Cans. 12 packs only.
Arrival: June 2013

6% ABV

Beer Street Journal Video: Heavy Seas Founder on Cans, Expansion & More

Beer Street Journal took a trip to Baltimore, Maryland a few weeks to meet with Hugh Sisson, founder of Heavy Seas Beer. 2013 promise to be a big year for the brewery. The Mutiny Fleet just got a major overhaul and is now dubbed Uncharted Waters, and will soon see release #3 – Holy Sheet!

Now shipping are cans for the first time in Heavy Seas history, starting off with Loose CANnon, the flagship IPA. You’ll note Hugh hints at a 4th can release this year… yet to be named.

As the demand for hops and Heavy Seas grows (35% this year!) , so is the brewery. By this time next year, a new brewhouse will be in place, raising fermentation capacity, a better bottling line, and more. What you see in the video above will be completely different this time next year.

Heavy Seas Releases Riptide White IPA

Heavy Seas (Baltimore, MD) has launched their newest bottle offering – Riptide White IPA.  This new brew is a crossover of sorts, as it has the malt body of witbier, but hopped like an IPA. The best of both worlds really as the weather warms up.

When brewing Riptide the brewery filled the hopback (a piece of brewery equipment used to hop your beer) with orange peel, and coriander, in addition to a healthy hop dose. The finished product is fun to sort out with each sip.

Style: White IPA (w/ Sweet & Bitter Orange Peel, Coriander)
Hops: Czech Saaz, French Strisselspalt, Calypso, Centennial, Cascade, Citra
Malts: Torrified Wheat

Food Pairings: Grilled Fish, Panko Crusted Seafood, Tropical Fruit
