Barney’s Beanery, Firestone Walker Brewing Company Launch “Boot Camp Beer” to Benefit Marine Corp Scholarships

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA, May 07, 2012 — In an effort to help directly support military families Barney’s Beanery and Firestone Walker Brewing Company invite patrons to enlist in a good cause under the banner of Boot Camp Beer, with the sale of each pint of Pale 31 ale generating a 50-cent donation to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

Now, when patrons raise a toast to those who protect our nation, they will directly support military families as well. Starting this month, the Boot Camp Beer is on tap at all five Barney’s Beanery locations — West Hollywood, Santa Monica/Third Street Promenade, Old Town Pasadena, Burbank/The Collections, and Westwood Village.

“Firestone Walker’s Pale 31 is one of our most popular beers on tap, so we expect this program to generate significant ongoing donations to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation,” said AJ Sacher, regional manager for Barney’s Beanery.

The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is the nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen, with particular attention given to those whose parent has been killed or wounded in combat, or who have demonstrated financial need.

According to Sacher, the Boot Camp Beer program was conceived by David Houston, co-owner of the Barney’s Beanery franchise. Houston’s father served in the Navy, and he grew up on military bases. “He has always had a strong attachment to the military,” Sacher said. “We already offer a discount to uniformed armed services personnel, but David wanted to do something more, something that all of our patrons could be involved in.”

Founded in Santa Barbara County in 1996, Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a regional California brewery specializing in fine pale ales. Pale 31 is recognized as one of the world’s top pale ales, with gold medals earned at the World Beer Cup, Great American Beer Festival, Australian International Beer Awards, California State Fair and other prestigious competitions.

The original Barney’s Beanery is the third oldest restaurant in Los Angeles and number one sports bar in Southern California. Visit us at www.barneysbeanery.com . Follow Barney’s on Twitter @barneysbeanery or friend us at facebook.com/bbeanery.

Firestone Walker’s Rep’n Da 805

Firestone Walker’s 805 Ale celebrates all things local.  805 is the area code that serves the brewery’s home of Paso Robles, California.  805 split off of the Los Angeles area code in 1957.

What will 805 might be you might ask?  Literally as I’m writing this, the info shows up on my desk.

Presser:

“805” tap handles will be showing up in bars across the 805 area code.

The Central Coast brewery, Firestone Walker, which has been making a version of the beer available in its pub for several years, brews the blonde ale.

“We had been making this beer for a while and you can find it in a few bars, usually given a unique name by one of the locals… but then people learned that it was ours and kept asking for us to release it,” said David Walker, co-owner of the brewery. “So we decided to listen to them, the first step was to christen the beer ‘the 805’, and to make it available widely in bars with an 805 area code. Next we’ll release bottles in the spring on the Central Coast simply trying to keep it local.”

Those that have tried 805 before, recognize it by its golden color, light and crisp carbonation and slightly sweet aroma. If you’re new to the beer you’ll find that the honey flavor is noticeable on the palate but not overpowering, making this a clean, sessionable Ale that is the perfect fit for after surfing, hiking or just a hot day in Paso Robles.

The beer was a recipient of a bronze medal at the European Beer Star Awards in 2010, which has lent it a reputation in beer circles as well as being a favorite with Central Coast locals.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company was founded in 1996 and is located in Paso Robles, Ca.  The brewery prides itself in producing the world’s finest pale ales to a regional market.  Firestone is the only brewery to be awarded Best Mid-sized Brewery honors three times at the 2003, 2007 and 2011 Great American Beer Festivals as well as World Beer Cup Champion for a Mid-sized Brewery at the 2004, 2006 and 2010 World Beer Cup competitions.

Availability: Draft only now, 12oz bottles later in 2012.

Firestone Walker §ucaba Releases 1/28

You knew this beer as Abacus.   ZD Wines has a wine called Abacus also.  The winery thinks you are too dumb to know the difference, and sued Firestone Walker for trademark infringement.  They settled out of court, and FW stopped using the Abacus name as of June, 2011.  So that leaves the question – How the hell did they brewery decide on §ucaba?  Imagine Abacus in a mirror.  Backwards it would look pretty much like this  Abacus = §ucabA.  Hopefully ZD doesn’t sue for mirrored trademark infringement.

About the beer:
Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.

Style: Barleywine (Barrel Aged)
Hops: Bittering–Bravo; Late Kettle–East Kent Golding
Malts: Munton’s Pale, Crisp Maris Otter Pale, Munich, Dark & Light Crystal, Chocolate

Availability: 22oz bombers, boxed. Limited Draft.
Arrival: Tap room debut, 1/28/12
Distro Area:  CA, NV, OR, WA, AZ, CO, MO, Chicago, MA, NJ, NY, VA, PA, DC, MD

PR: Firestone Walker Expanding Proprietor’s In 2012

Firestone Walker Expands Proprietor’s Reserve Series

Two New Beers Will Be Released This Year

Paso Robles, Calif – Firestone Walker Brewing Co., after being named Great American Beer Festival Mid-Sized Brewery of the Year for an unprecedented third time, will be adding more beers to their Proprietor’s Reserve Series. Double DBA and Wookey Jack will join the existing line-up of beers, which sees distribution all over the US.

Wookey Jack, an 8.3 percent alcohol by volume, unfiltered black rye IPA, will be a year-round beer that will be released in mid-March. Wookey Jack will put a serious twist on the IPA theme weaving in jet-black dark malts, assertive citrusy hops and a spicy addition of rye malt.  Consumers will see this beer in 22oz bottles and on draft wherever Firestone is currently sold.

Double DBA, has been a part of the anniversary blend over the past three years and was originally brewed for that sole purpose. Now the Imperial Special Bitter will be released annually to the delight of beer fans that have been calling for it to leave the brewery. The 12 percent brew is aged in a variety of barrels including retired Firestone Union barrels and 20-year-old Bourbon barrels.  This beer pays proud homage to our flagship DBA. It will be available in 22oz bottles and limited draft in select accounts beginning July 2012.

“The Proprietor’s Reserve series allows us the opportunity as brewers to exercise our creativity and really push the limits of our brew kit and our raw materials.” said Firestone Walker Brewmaster, Matt Brynildson. “Wookey Jack is our take on newly established “Black IPA” style while also being our very first rye beer.  DDBA is a familiar friend that we have been perfecting in our barrel-aging program over the past 3 years.  We believe that both are ready to leave the nest in 2012.”

Currently the Proprietor’s Reserve Series consists of three oak aged beers and two year-round stainless steel releases.  The year round releases are Double Jack Imperial IPA and Walker’s Reserve Porter. Double Jack recently won the gold medal at the 2011 European Beer Star Awards and the silver medal at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival.  Walker’s Reserve was named Champion Porter at the Australian Beer awards and was the only porter to be awarded a gold medal.

On February 1st the beer formerly known as Abacus will return under the new name ‘§ucaba.’ This Bourbon Barrel-aged Barley Wine will be the same great beer just with a new, more elusive name.

Parabola, a Bourbon Barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout, will also return, it will be released in mid-April. ’16’, Firestone’s anniversary blend, will return next November to celebrate yet another year of brewing.
