Boulevard to Begin $12 Million Expansion

Boulevard Brewing Company (Kansas City, MO) will soon break ground on a $12 million dollar expansion. The project, dubbed “Cellar Five” will include added fermentation space, new building structures.

Boulevard is adding six 1,000 barrel fermenters (186,000 gallons of extra space) and an 8,400 square foot, two story process building. In the end, the brewery’s capacity will increase over 40% to 300,000 barrels (9.3 million gallons of beer) annually.

A $2.5 million dollar effluent equalization system and filtration centrifuge is also on order.

“We’ve been planning Cellar Five for the better part of two years,” said Mike Utz, Director of Engineering. “It’s an exciting and challenging project, as it will house our largest fermentation tanks to date. The new structures will complement the appearance of the adjacent Cellar Three, with design elements drawn from our Brewhouse Two building.”

Kansas City-based Rau Construction ,CRB Engineers, and PMA Engineering will work on the expansion project. Brewery/fermentation equipment will be supplied by Krones AG.

The expansion should be completed in mid-2015.

Boulevard & Odell Celebrate 25 Years with a Special Collaboration

2014 marks the silver anniversary for American craft brewers Boulevard Brewing  (Kansas City, MO) and Odell Brewing (Ft. Collins, CO).

On November 17th, 1989, John McDonald sold his first keg of Boulevard beer. One day later, John Odell sold his first keg, kicking off a quarter century of brewing success. To honor the occasion, the breweries are creating Silver Anniversary Ale.

On November 17, 1989 John McDonald loaded a keg of Boulevard Pale Ale into the back of his pick up truck and drove to a restaurant a few blocks down the street. Scarcely 24 hours later and 650 miles away, Doug Odell loaded a keg of Odell Golden Ale into the back of his pick up truck and… You get the idea. They were the first kegs of beer either of them ever sold, but they wouldn’t be the last. This golden copper ale celebrates 25 years of brewing with an ample body of caramel – toffee malt balance by piney hop notes. Here’s a toast to working hard and sticking with it. Cheers!

Both Odell Brewing and Boulevard Brewing are slated to release either own editions of Silver Anniversary Ale. The Boulevard edition depicted here will be packaged in 750ml bottles.

Sierra Nevada & Boulevard Terra Incognita Returns

Three years ago, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Boulevard Brewing Company created Terra Incognita, a special offering for SAVOR, a a Brewers Association beer and food event. The beer was so much fun to make, the two breweries released it again in 2013, this time with Brettanomyces yeast.

The 2014 edition does not include wild yeast, but let us assure you after trying it right after bottling, it’s better than you can imagine. This year is a 55% blend of wine barrel ale, 32% bourbon barrel aged ale, and 13% fresh ale. The base beer is a hoppy, imperial brown ale.

“The base beer is a roasty, hopped-up brown ale that evolves in such interesting ways when it spends time in wine and whiskey barrels,” said Sierra Nevada Head Brewer Steve Dresler. “We hosted Boulevard at our Chico brewery and together tasted various blending ratios until we had a final beer that captivated us. We imagine craft beer drinkers will be similarly impressed.”

Sierra Nevada/Boulevard Brewing Terra Incognita will be available in 750 ml bottles for a limited time.

Style: American Strong Ale (Barrel Aged. Bourbon. Wine Barrel Aged)
Availability: 750ml Bottles. Limited Release.
