Tapping that evening will be Bells/De Proef Collaboration – “Van Twee”.  This collaboration is a mixture of Dubbel and Porter styles infused with sour cherry juice from Michigan.  It is also fermented with several yeast strains. Read the full story of “Van Twee”  HERE.

CASK ALERT & MEET THE BREWER! Larry Bell of Bell’s Brewing!

If there were a Mount Rushmore for beer, Larry Bell — founder of Bell’s Brewery would be on it.   This is a guy who started with a home brew shop in 1983, selling his first beer in 1985.  Bell’s has done nothing but grow since then.   I place him in such high esteem because Larry runs one of the oldest craft breweries in America.   Larry Bell’s passion for craft brewing not only changed the face of beer in the US, but also inspired many to follow in his footsteps.

On Tuesday, 1/19/10 you have the chance to meet Larry Bell.  I mention time and time again what a great opportunity it is to meet a brewer and understand beer from their prospective.  Larry will also be tapping an EXTREMELY rare cask of “Van Twee” — the recent collaboration between Bell’s Brewery and De Proef Brewery in Belgium.  Learn about Van Twee HERE.

Alongside the cask of Van Twee, you can finally get a taste of Hopslam, Bell’s very limited, seasonal Double IPA.

If that’s not enough, there will also be 14 other Bell’s beers to try.   Yes, I typed that right.  14 more. Honestly, I doubt you can find a reason NOT to come meet Larry Bell, try a rare cask, and enjoy a great beer filled evening.  See you there!

Beer Spotlight – De Proef/Bell’s Collaboration – “Van Twee”

In 1996, highly regarded brewing professor and engineer Dirk Naudts created De Proef Brouwerij near Gent, Belgium.  Dirk Naudts is considered one of the leading brew masters in Belgium.  De Proef (or “The Prof — Dirk’s nickname)  is a highly scientific brewery that melds traditional brewing methods with modern equipment technologies.  Versatility is a keyword when describing De Proef as each beer is made in a 9 Barrel brewhouse, which allows each beer to be specially crafted and unique.

Dirk’s brewing reputation spawned the collaboration project between De Proef and American brewers.  Bell’s Brewing was the most recent participant in the collaboration.  John Mallet of Bell’s visit De Proef, and together they brewed Van Twee or “From Two” in Flemish.   Van Twee was first a dark brew, resembling a Porter, but also had traits of a Belgian Dubbel.

The finishing touch to Van Twee came from Bell’s home state of Michigan.  Cherry juice squeezed from sour Michigan cherries were added to give Twee a dark, fruity character.   Finally, sugar from Michigan sugar beets were used for bottle conditioning.  (Sugar in bottle conditioning aids in bottle carbonation, but doesn’t contribute much to ABV over time.)

Other interesting notes about Van Twee —

Brettanomyces was used in primary fermentation.   It adds to the Belgian flair.  Van Twee is the 3rd in the SBS imports collaboration series.    Twee will shelf well.  Good one for now, and probably better later.

7.5% ABV

750 ml — Corked & Caged Bottles

Average Price  14.00 — Hop City, Tower, Greens

UPDATE! A rare cask of Van Twee will be tapping at Taco Mac Metropolis @ 6 pm 1/19/10  with Brewer/Founder Larry Bell.

UPDATE 2/15/10 – Van Twee will be available  at Cypress Street Pint & Plate 2/16, 7pm

Coming Soon! – Bell’s Brewing – Two Hearted Ale IPA

Bells Two Hearted Ale

Bell’s Brewing launched in Georgia back in May. While that is great news for Atlanta drinkers, there were some beers that didn’t find their way from Kalamazoo, Michigan. In my opinion, there are 2 very important beers by Bell’s that have yet to be sold in Georgia. Hopslam, and Two-Hearted Ale.

Unfortunately, Hopslam is still looking to arrive in 2010! As for Two-Hearted? The wait is over. While the exact date is a bit uncertain, you should see it before mid November. (Possibly sooner.)
Two Hearted Ale is brewed year round by Bell’s. While the hop content is unpublished, homebrew recipes concur the use of Centennial hops. From various tastings, Two Hearted has Pale and Caramel malts. The Name? Many speculate on the meaning of the name, but after speaking with an individual at the brewery its a taste description. Two Hearted essentially has 2 “hearts”, the hop and the malt. Neither seems to overwhelm the other.

From the bottle – India Pale Ale style well suited for Hemingway-esque trips to the Upper Peninsula. American malts and enormous hop additions give this beer a crisp finish and incredible floral hop aroma.

Two Hearted is 7% ABV. 12 oz bottles, ½ and ¼ barrels. It is being distributed by Savannah Distributing. I will definitely update with arrival dates and locations on this site and on Twitter – @atlbeermaster

Brickstore’s 1st IPA Fest – CHEAT SHEET!

No catchy picture for this one. Its a long post.

Brickstore Pub on Saturday October 10th is hosting its first “Hop Harvest” Fest. All 25 taps will be featuring IPAs. Here is a little back-story on the India Pale Ale, in case you never fully knew the style. If you were going to draw up a family tree, the Pale Ale would be the father of the IPA. Pale ales were denoted by the use of pale malt, circa 17th century. The pale ale style has changed over time, and by the mid 18th century coke fire malt was used to produce a beer that was actually paler than its predecessors.

Now, I tell you about pale ales to lead to this. George Hodgson Bow Brewery is attributed to the world’s first IPA. This IPA was a pale ale as described above, that was well hopped, termed October Beer. (See posts about origins of names and style.) This October beer was meant to be cellared for a year or longer. The East India Trading Company (think high school history class,) exported Hodgson’s beer to India — which survived very well on the long trip, thanks to the hoppy nature of the beer acting as a preservative. Ultimately after business deals going bad with Hodgson, other breweries began producing this hoppy style of pale ale, and the demand for an “India Pale Ale” was born.

There’s your history lesson. Knowing the style helps you appreciate your beer. So here is a cheat sheet of the line up of the 25 IPA’s to be featured on Saturday —

Smuttynose “Big A” — Double IPA (DIPA) 9.2% ABV. Part of Smutty’s big beer series. Seasonal release.

Moylan’s “Hopsickle” — DIPA, 9.2% ABV. Tomahawk, Cascade, Centennial hops. VERY hoppy beer, Novato, CA.

Avery “Maharaja” — DIPA, 10.2% ABV. Columbus, Centennial, Crystal, Simcoe hops. Caramel malts. Produced Mar- Sept. Maharaja in Sanskrit means “Great King.” Boulder, CO.

Lagunitas “Hop Stoopid” — DIPA, 8.2% ABV. Hop content unknown. Brewed with Hop extracts, not whole hops. Lagunitas quoted “So hoppy it will take the enamel off your teeth.” Petaluma, CA.

Sierra Nevada “Harvest Ale” — IPA, 6.2% ABV. First Brewed in ’96. Centennial & Cascade wet hops. Brewed same day hops are picked. Chico, CA.

Left Hand “Warrior” — IPA, 6.6% ABV. Wet hopped w/ Warrior Hops. Left hand balances with strong malt backbone. Crystal, Pale, & 2 Row. Seasonal Offering. Longmont, CO.

Bells “Two-Hearted Ale — IPA, 7% ABV. Hop content not published, but home brew recipes for Two hearted all use Centennial hops. Kalamazoo, MI.

Victory “Harvest Ale” — American Strong Pale, 7.7%. This is NOT, and will NOT be available in GA according to Victory Brewery. 3 hop varieties. Downingtown, PA.

Stone “Sublimely Self Righteous Ale” — American Strong Ale, 8.7% ABV. By taste, I call this a black IPA. Originally Stone’s 11th Anniversary Ale. It was so popular, it was re released again as Sublimely. It is no longer made, or sold. This is your one shot deal. For me its liquid gold. Escondido, CA.
