Looks like 21st Amendment ‘s (San Francisco, CA) signature IPA in a can has gotten brand new, snappy artwork. Looks pretty good huh? Drink! Abe Lincoln says so! And he doesn’t lie.

Like Abe, we believe in freedom. Freedom from the (can’t read the word) that IPAs should only assail you with bitterness, and from the idea that a big, balanced, hoppy beer can’t come in a can. We believe that those who have tasted freedom shall forever brew free, celebrating the right to be original.
I know quite a few people that were really excited to see 21st Amendment Brewing expand distribution because that meant “Monk’s Blood”. Monks is a premiere Belgian style ale in a can. As the San Francisco based brewery announced this week, Monk’s Blood will return this December. Here’s a little info to wet your whistle.
Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale Hops: Magnum, Centennial, Amarillo Malts: Belgian Pilsner, Two Row Pale, caramunich, caravienne, aromatic, special b, flaked oats, flaked wheat Special Ingredients: Dark Belgian candi sugar, cinnamon, vanilla bean, black mission figs, aged in oak. Yeast: Abbey ale
The newest from can evangelists 21st Amendment Brewing (San Francisco, CA) is here. Good for fall, perfect for winter. It’s a spiced English style ale with a lot of flavor to get you through these not so cold Georgia nights. 21st Amendment does well with spices. You’ll see soon with Monk’s Blood.
Commercial Description: Like FDR’s Depression-era radio addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, our Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. We begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale and then we improvise with spices until we know we have a beer worth sharing with the nation. Fireside Chat is our early winter seasonal brew available from October through December in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like a classic, warming Strong Ale but with a subtle blend of hand-selected spices for just the right festive flair.
Beer Rundown: Style: Winter Warmer Hops: Magnum, Goldings Malts: Munich, Wheat, Crystal, Aromatic, De Bittered Black
Spices, Cocoa Nibs
21st Amendment has released thus far – Brew Free or Die IPA, Hell or High Watermelon Wheat, and Back in Black. There are a lot of people looking forward to Monk’s Blood. However, a new release will precede Monk’s and it’s called “Fireside Chat.”
One of 21st Amendment’s “Can Evangelists” pointed me over to 21A’s Facebook page where the early details have been released. From their post:
Fun facts about this art and the reason why we did this:
-Art is titled – FDR “Beer Geeking” with an elf!
-On March 12, 1933 FDR conducted his first “Fireside Chat”. This was a series of thirty evening radio speeches given by FDR between 1933 and 1944. These Chats were a way to communicate to the American public many things, along with how the country was going to recover from the great depression. “After the first Fireside Chat,” writes Alter, “Roosevelt relaxed in his office with Howe and Rosenman, his two top aides. At about 11:30 p.m. he said: ‘I think it’s time for beer.’ Preparations for a bill to speed the end of Prohibition began that night.”
-On March 22, 1933 FDR signed a bill legalizing 3.2% beer.
-This was accomplished by Rewriting the Volstead Act to categorize “nonintoxicating” beverages as ones containing up to 3.2% alcohol
-FDR was in office when the 21st Amendment was passed (December 5th, 1933). Utah was the final state to come on board and make the 21st Amendment official.
Availability: 12oz Cans. Draft. Seasonal. Available for 3 months
Black IPA IN A CAN! Yeah, I know. Awesome. 21st Amendment you’re pretty cool. Shortly after 21st Amendment’s launch in Atlanta a new release has arrived. A dark cousin to 21A’s (cool people way of referencing 21st Amendment) premiere IPA in a can “Brew Free or Die IPA” is “Back in Black.”
Back in Black more than a Black IPA, it”s historical! As the 21st describes –
“Inspired by Paul Revere’s midnight ride, we rebelled against the British style IPA, embraced the more aggressive American version and then recast it in bold, brave, defiant black. Our Black IPA is a Declaration of Independence from the tyranny of the expected.
“Back in Black is our newest year-round beer available now in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.”
Ingredients:
Flavor Hops: Columbus, Centennial
Bittering Hops: Columbus
Dry Hops: Centennial, Simcoe.
Malts: Rahr Pale Malt, Crystal 45L, Munich, De-Bittered Black
Yeast: Ale
Taste Expectations: Dark Malts- chocolate & roasted. Slight coffee if you dig. Pine & grapefruit hops. Some bitter. Again, it’s an IPA brewed with dark malts.

Taco Mac’s beer dinners usually feature a particular brewery paired with some great dishes. About once a year they go a bit off script. Each summer, Taco Mac Beverage Director Fred Crudder and Chef Matthew Deckard host what they dub – “Fred & Matt’s Big Picnic.” The literature for this year’s even doesn’t call it that, but I like the name so that’s what it’s called. (Fred take note.) The dinner features Atlanta new comer 21st Amendment, Sierra Nevada, Aspall Cider, Harpoon, Brooklyn and Einbecker. Here’s the menu –

It’s a little funny to be talking about meeting brewers before their beers are even on shelves and taps in Georgia. 21st Amendment (San Fransisco, CA) is indeed headed to Atlanta and your first chance to meet the brewers have arrived.
On Monday, June 28th owners Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan will be at Taco Mac Metropolis meeting the Atlanta beer brethren and talk about their 2 beers just launched here – Hell or High Watermelon Wheat and Live Free or Die IPA. Hopefully you know by now, their beers come in cans. Great.For.The.Pool. (and everywhere else.)
