Spencer Trappist Brewery Launches in Georgia

America’s only Trappist brewery is now in the state of Georgia. Massachusett’s based Spencer Trappist has signed a new distribution deal with Atlanta Beverage and Eagle Rock to bring their (currently one offering) to the state.

Of the 180 Trappist monasteries in the world, only 9 are also breweries. Those 9 are Chimay, Rochefort, Orval, Achel, Westmalle, Westvleteren, Koningshoeven, Stift Engelzell, and now Spencer. The International Trappist Organization recognizes these breweries as Trappist, and each carry the Trappist logo on their bottles. None are in the United States. Until now.

The Saint Joseph Abbey added the brewery, under the advisement of Chimay.

Spencer has just one offering right now, Spencer Trappist Ale, a Belgian-style pale ale, packaged in 11.2oz bottles.

The offering is now available in the state of Georgia, as of the first week of December. Georgia is the brewery’s 7th state of distribution.

Great Divide Orabelle Planned for Cans

A bit more on the Great Divide Brewing can front. The future can lineup in 2015 will feature (at various times) Titan IPA, Hibernation Ale, Colette, and now Orabelle.

Great Divide Orabelle is a seasonal Belgian-style tripel, released in draft and 12oz bottles.

ORABELLE is brewed with barley, wheat, oats, and rye.  This Belgian-Style Tripel is a golden beauty.  Its two yeast strains, orange peel and dash of coriander impart surprising complexity and richness to this delicate ale. Don’t let Orabelle’s demure nature fool you; this is one flavorful pour.  Watch out, she’s a charmer – one sip and you’ll be in love.

Great Divide Orabelle typically arrives in January, but the canning line won’t be producing until closer to summer, 2015. The brewery will outline the can lineup closer to production.

Style: Belgian-style Tripel
Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft. Seasonal Release. 12oz cans (Planned)
Arrival: TBA

Creature Comforts Koko Buni & More Planned For Cans

Creature Comforts (Athens, GA) launched two can offerings this month – Tropicalia and Athena. Both can offerings have been quite well received. The brewery has already ordered more tanks to double their annual capacity, just to keep up with can production.

So what’s next?

The brewery is going to increase production of Athena and Tropicalia in hopes to satisfy demand of their hometown of Athens and supply Atlanta, Georgia.

Soon after, Creature Comforts will expand the can lineup to include Bibo Pilsner, and Reclaimed Rye.

Then, in fall 2015, look for Koko Buni (a coconut coffee porter) in 12oz cans as a seasonal.

Japanese Brewer Kirin Debuts Thinner Bottle

Kirin Brewing Co. has debuted a new bottle, that is just 13.4 ounces in weight. That’s around 20% lighter than the bottle the brewery was previously using.

The new bottle holds 16.9 ounces (same as before) but is 1.5 millimeters slimmer, and is coated with ceramic to protect from impact.

Overall a case of 20 bottles weights almost 4 pounds less than before. That could reduce carbon emissions from shipping by nearly 1000 tons annually.

The bottles will gradually replace the current inventory of Kirin beer over the next few months/years.

Drunk Teacher Pees Himself In Front of Kids

Parents of Southington High School (Southington, CT) are miffed after the schools superintendent sent a letter home about a recent “incident.”

A school Spanish teacher came into school intoxicated (during 1st and 2nd period) and ultimately soiled himself in front on students. The students taped the incident, especially the part where he pinned a student up against a wall, EAGNews reports.

School officials led the teacher of the school in handcuffs, but did not contact the police. Apparently contacting law enforcement was not part of the protocol.

(My Spanish teacher was constantly sober, judging by how little I was able to get away with.)
