Cigar City And Dunedin Form An Alliance

Cigar City Brewing and Dunedin Brewing (both Florida brewers) are forming an beer alliance.  Actually, and “agreement & collaboration.”  The beer echos and allegiance between Scotland & France that had a profound impact on the world.

Label:

Dunedin Brewery is Florida’s oldest Craft Brewery. Cigar City  is one of the youngest. In fact CC’s founder got his start in the craft beer business as a sales rep for Dunedin brewery.

Started in ’96 in the Scottish Heritage town of Dunedin, Founder Michael Bryant and his staff at Dunedin Brewery displayed a tenacity that resulted in a staying power many breweries opened in the 90s were unable to match. It also resulted in a lot of really good local beer! 15 years of it in fact.

Over the years, Dunedin has had a major impact on the Florida beer scene and served as an inspiration for those that followed it. In its role as elder Statesman, Dunedin has both inspired and provided a model and it is in that spirit of cooperation and guidance that we present Auld Alliance.

Auld Alliance (vielle alliance) was the alliance of kingdoms between Scotland and France from 1295 & 1560 which profoundly shaped the legal, military, cultural and even culinary makeup of both countries. It also provides a good historical analogy for the spirit of cooperation possessed by so many people who work to create hand-crafted beer.  Auld Alliance is a Scotch Ale reflecting the Scottish contribution to the Alliance fermented with a Saison yeast strain thats origin is traced back to France.

Style: Described as a Biere De Scotch ale

Availability: 750ml bottles, Draft

?? ABV

Heineken Blaming Bad Sales On Bad Weather Too

Heineken looks to be using the bad weather angle (alongside depressed consumer confidence) on a drop in sales.  Miller said the same thing.   Globe and Mail reported Heineken’s take on earnings & sales:

Heineken blamed poor weather and depressed consumer confidence for its bad showing. The problem is that these types of excuses — impossible to prove or disprove — have become too common across the industry. Investors may think the sector deserves another de-rating. The last one came with the financial crisis. Beverage groups’ shares moved from trading at between 18 and 22 times expected earnings to the current 9 to 15 times — a drop more than half as steep again as the S&P 500.

Heineken, alongside SABMiller, A-B, & Carlsberg make up close to half of global beer sales. [Globe&Mail]

A-B Shopping For New Ad Agency

U.S. VP-Marketing Paul Chibe is shopping around for new ad agencies.  The focus is Bud Light.  Apparently this is the largest ad agency “shopping trip” AB has been on in many years.

Bud Light is the #1 selling beer in America with a 19.1% market share, despite declining retail and on premise sales.  Chibe tells Ad Age this about the future approach:

No. 1 priority in the U.S. is to accelerate the growth of Bud Light.” He added: “The key brand-health indicators for Bud Light continued to improve and we gained share in the quarter,” but, “we believe we can do better.’

We aren’t talking just ads here either.  AB says it’s looking to approach events, contests, packaging & more a different way. [AdAdage]

We will hold prices constant for at least the next sixteen months, so our retailers can continue to grow their Green Flash business,” says Mike Hinkley, Green Flash Founder and CEO. “We are growing in a way that is smart and cost effective, and our team is excited to be able to craft exceptional beer at a consistent, reliable price point.
