Dogfish Survives Hurricane, Loses Power

Dogfish Head (and Evolution Brewing) fall right into the path of Hurricane Irene’s path as she heads northeast.  The brewery tweeted early this AM that the brewery is fine, but there was a loss of power .

@DogfishBeer

Bye, bye #Irene ! Brewery looks good externally. We did lose power for a few hours (which means temp controls for the tanks). Won’t know for a bit if any beer was affected. Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in downtown Rehoboth Beach will remain closed today. Thanks to all who’ve been asking – cheers!

Highly unlikely that a few hours of power loss & temperature control would affect fermenting beer to the point it couldn’t be sold.  Time will tell.

No word on the state of Evolution Brewing.  Breweries up through Delaware and Philadelphia including Iron Hill Brewing (Media & Wilmington, DE power outages), Nodding Head (Opens at 12pm), Yards, Philadelphia Brewing weathered the storm just fine (according to Philly twitter friends.)

Brewery founder Sam Calagione appeared VIA Skype on MSNBC, chatting about hurricane preps.  Currently searching for a line.

UPDATE: Victory Brewing loses power, closes the pub/ brewing operations until power returns. (hopefully by dinner)  Harpoon Brewing is closed, as a state of emergency is declared in Massachusetts.  I’m sure the same goes for Boston Beer Company.

UPDATE: Dogfish Brewpub opens at 12 noon on Monday, 8/29

He’Brew Genesis 15:15 Is Barrel Aged Grape, Pomegranate, Date, Fig Celebration

The 5th release in Shmaltz Brewing’s Barrel Release will be bottled in September.  Genesis 15:15 celebrates 15 years of Shmaltz Brewing with a Barrel Aged Harvest  Barleywine aged in Sazerac Rye Barrels.  The beer will have grape, fig and pomegranate juice & dates added to the brew.  In true Shmaltz form, Jeremy Cowan toasts 15 years. (I took the time to type it out, give it a read would ya? )

Label:
15 Years and the bombastic beers blossom bolder than ever.  The shtick ages so beautifully as well – some favorites from the Shmaltz vault: GRAPES: “No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig.” – Epiclitus.  FIGS:  “And their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked; they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.”- Genesis 3:7.  POMEGRANATES: In Medieval images of a unicorn hung, the capture beast bleeds from the wounds of pomegranate seeds dripping blood red juices on his milk white body.  Wile and uncontrollable by nature, unicorns could be tamed only by virgins.  Once tamed, the unicorn was chained to a pomegranate tree.  DATES:  Song of Solomon 7:6: “How beautiful and how delightful you are, my Love, with all your charms!  Your stature is like a date palm tree, I will climb the tree and take hold of its stalks.” Psalm 92:12: “The righteous shall flourish like the Date plan.” Arab proverb: It is good to know the truth, but it is better to speak of pam trees. Genesis Chapter 15 promises many battles but also scared covenants. Verse 15: “You, Abrahams shall be gathered into the arms of your people at a ripe old age.”  To the torrents and the trials, the punchlines and the pleasures. To 15 Years of Shmaltz Life – and beyond – L’Chaim!

In 2010, Snow Beer (a lager) sold 16.5 BILLION pints, more than doubling that of Bud Light.  That’s 2 billion, 62 million gallons of Snow Beer consumed in a single year!  Get this, China is it’s ONLY market.  China Resources got started 15 years ago with just 3 breweries.  Today, they own 80 of China’s 500 breweries.  While Bud Light is second in sales to Snow Beer, BL is still America’s #1 selling beer with a 19.1% market share.  [Time, Telegraph]
