Victory’s Home Of Downingtown Under Water

While the Victory Brewery seems to be safe, residents of Downingtown, Pennsylvania are soaked from the same water that makes the beer.  Another brewing town in a string of brewing towns dealing with crazy weather. (RE: Vermont, New York, Philly).  Hershey Park in Hershey, PA suffered from flash flooding yesterday and 2 buffalo in the park died.  Troegs Brewing is putting the finishing touches on their new brewery at Hershey, no word if water was an issue there.

The borough of Downingtown was essentially “split in half” by flooding last night, she said. Downingtown Police Lt. Howard Holland said police were just starting to relax as the tributaries of the Brandywine Creek that snake through the borough were visibly receding and the rains had subsided. Then, with no warning, the Brandywine burst over its banks about 5:30 p.m., engulfing Route 30 and Pennsylvania Avenue and making it impossible to travel from one end of the borough to the other…

Stone’s Newest Export? Mitch Steele

Stone Brewing just seems to have a European itch. On Monday Stone Brewing sent Brewmaster Mitch Steele to England to Wadworth’s historic Northgate Brewery in Wiltshire where he will be brewing a collaboration beer.  Stone and Wadworth’s collaboration will be served during the 2 ½ week long Real Ale & Cider Festival at the 800 chain Wetherspoon’s & Lloyd’s #1.

The beer?  A Stone-style Wadworth beer.  San Diego Session Ale gets a little European hop treatment.

Hops: Centennial, Columbus, Amarillo, Delta, and Calypso
Malt: English Malts — pale malt with 5% each of crystal and Munich
Yeast: Wadworth’s house yeast strain, traditional English variety

Availability: October 5th at Wetherspoon’s Festival

Chocolate Rain $300, Hunahpu $80, Cable Car $450

Anyone purchased beer on Ebay? Every hardened beer geek has.   Beers are currently on sale on ebay for up to 2000% more than the beer was sold for.   Breweries like Lost AbbeyStoneRussian RiverLost Abbey & currently on sale.  Brewers however, dislike the idea.  Tomme Arthur pretty much sums up their collective thoughts:

“We believe those selling beer on eBay should be chased down.”

Before you read the Washington Post article, check out these Ebay auctions

The Bruery: 2 Chocolate Rains, 3 Black Tuesdays.  $1,500  ($300 a bottle)

Lost Abbey : 2007 Cable Car. $350

Three Floyds: Dark Lord, 3 Vintages.  $150

Especially love this “entrepreneur.” Selling Life & Limb 2 for nearly 4x the amount, and it’s currently ON SHELVES.

Marin Preps For Wet Hops

Tim Sciascia, brewer at Marin Brewing Company (maker of Moylan’s) recently took a trip with other members of the staff to HopsMeister Hop Farm in California in search of organic, wet, fresh hops to brew with.  The farm started 4 years ago in Oregon & Washington and has grown considerably in acreage since then.

Cascade, Columbus, Chinook, & Horizon vines run as much as 15 feet high.  Marin bought hops and had them immediately picked and taken back to Novato, California to brew with as fast as possible.  Fresh hopped brews have been a growing trend over the past few years, a brew that is time critical.  Fresher the hop the better.  While some breweries ship their fresh hopped pales and IPAs, some keep them very local.

The 1st of 3 casks tap today.  Three Flowers & Marin IPA will tap over the next week.    With the left over hops, Marin hints a potentially wet hopping a favorite. Like Moylander IPA. [LarkspurPatch]
