Harpoon, Rock Art, Farmstead Help The Alchemist

The Alchemist Brewpub & Brewery is hard at work after the Vermont flood in August.

3 weeks later:

– electrical work is being completed.

– new concrete slabs are on the way

– Even though tanks were on their sides post flood, the beer had to be dumped out and the tanks stood up but they were just fine.

– Some tanks were still not only under pressure, but on their feet.  El Jefe, Shut The Hell Up! Heretic, and Luscious.  Issue now was how to save the beer.

– Alchemist reached out to Harpoon Brewing, who didn’t think twice at sending kegs up there to transfer the beer.

When I went to release the top pressure on the El Jefe, it began to absolutely GUSH out of the top of the tank. So, here I was, 8:30 in the morning, completely soaked in beer, my hair full of hops, my boots full of delicious IPA. A total loss. Up next was the tank of Shut The Hell Up! Same thing, a total gushing loss. I crossed my fingers on the next two, and to my relief, they were totally salvageable.

Heretic and Luscious survived!

The Heretic is a 9.9% Imperial IPA, and Luscious is an 11% imperial stout slated for November release.  They were saved and sent back to Harpoon for safe keeping.

In need of more assistance – Rock Art Brewing in Vermont is lending a hand.  They took the kegs that Harpoon was keeping, and with the help of Farmstead Brewing, primed the kegs and bottled the beer.

On October 8th, 2011 the bottles will be sold that The Alchemist Brewpub, benefitting the rebuild.   They want people to to see the shell of the pub before it is restored back to it’s previous glory.  [TheAlchemist]

Left Hand Brewing is declaring independence from foreign stouts.   Something craft hasn’t tackled here in the land of the free.    You might be able to deduce this.  You might not.  You’ll be drinking this one soon….

I’ll be at GABF next week finding out what Left Hand is up to.

After Slight Delay, Lagunitas Bavarian Doppel Hits

Lagunitas Brewing’s first brew on their new equipment was slightly delayed (originally due out in June, 2011.)
Lagunitas invited Rolec, the fabricators of the new equipment to brew on their creation.  The brewhouse was designed by Freistant Bayern Brothers.

In far-away 2006, in a beer hall in Philly, at the end of a long road, we shared our first beer with a Friestat Bayern Brewer enharmonically named Wolfgang. At stake, over a Prima Pils, was whether or not Lagunitas would purchase from him a new 80bbl brewhouse. It was a lot of money. Playing Silenus to my Brewery’s chariot, together- with the benefit of the Pils- we forded the emotional-economic crevasse and commissioned the brewhouse. Unforseeable at the time would be the need for even more brewing capacity today in extra-local 2011. So, for the sixth time in our short history, we lurch down that increasingly familiar road towards a new 250 barrel brewhouse. The actual installation, beginning in November, will bear a stong resemblance to a heart transplant, on an awake patient, performed on the backside of a galloping horse, or at very least in tow behind Dionysus’ trustworthy Silenus. Some is good, more is better. The good new is; it’s still us!

First Run Of Oxford Companion To Beer Sells Out

Garrett Oliver’s newest book – The Oxford Companion To Beer has been been met with great success.  The first run has sold out.  The Oxford Companion books are series of definitive texts on topics such as literature, food, wine & more.

From Brooklyn:

The Companion has already sold out of its first run, and distributors and brewers have certainly snagged their share. Garrett says some wholesalers bought 400 at a time, likely for the same reason they’re all investing in the Cicerone program: to keep up with the consumer, and continue to drive sales through education.

It reads like a dictionary, defining everything from beer, to beer styles.  It’s thick, a full 940 pages covering over 1000 beer subjects by 160 subject experts.  Suggested retail price: $65.

Brooklyn released a companion beer to The Companion – called The Companion.  (Redundant)  It’s a wheat wine joining the Brewmaster’s Reserve Series.

Shmaltz 15th Anniversary: 15 Hops, 15 Malts, 15% ABV

Shmaltz Brewing will soon to celebrating 15 years of brewing.  Each year, there are more hops, malts and booze to match the year.  It’s the 15th year, so expect 15 hops, 15 malts, 15% ABV. (Getting too high to sell in some states.)   What bottle would be complete if Jeremy Cowan didn’t write some insightful numeric correlations.  I took the time to type it out, you better read it…

In Jewish tradition, 15 marks major commemorations: Passover (the Exodus), Sukkot (40 years of wandering), and Tu Bishvat (the new year for Mother Nature) all start on the 15th day of the Hebrew month 15th suggests a certain wisdom from experience: “Old is always 15th years from now.” – Bill Cosby.  “We are alway more anxious to be distinguished for one talent we do not possess than 15 we do.” – Mark Twain.  After Andy Warhol, does 15 forever sound profound or frivolous? “In the future, everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes.” “Fame is the thirst of the youth.”- Lord Byron.  “The fact that my 15 minutes of fame has been extended is somewhat surprising to me and completely baffling to my wife.” – Barack Obama.  For Matt  EP: Hall of Famer Bart Starr rocked #15 as MVP in the Packers’ first two Super Bowl victories.  “South Park” evolved from “Jesus vs Santa” and is now entering its 15th season.  “We’re rehabbed and ready for our 15 minutes of shame.” – Marilyn Manson. Lyrics from Barry Manilow’s 2011 album 15 minutes released on the QVC network: “Make me a deal, I’lll sell my guts for glory.” “Fame and power are the objects of all men.  Even their partial fruition is gained by very few, and that at the expense of social pleasure, health, conscience, life” – Benjamin Disraeli.  After 1,972,350 sets of 15 minutes of Shmaltz Brewing, I’ll hoist my Jewbelation Quinceanera and sing 15 rounds of Viva la Evolucion de He’brew! L’Chaim! – Jeremy Cowan

Boulder, CO wants to encourage eating while drinking

We all know that eating while drinking can help to keep bad things from happening, but what if the law prevents it?  That is exactly what is being addressed in Boulder, CO.  Currently, laws require zoning for breweries, as well as wineries and distilleries, to estabilsh thier production and distribution facilities that does not allow food to be made on site.  Some breweries have found ways around this using catering companies or food trucks.  Twisted Pine and Boulder Beer have recieved permission from the city to serve food after a special review process.

It has been recommended by Boulder’s Planning Department that these codes be changed to allow on site restaurant operations for these facilities and is expected to go before the board on 10/20.

This would largely impact one of Boulder’s biggest craft breweries, Avery Brewing.  Avery wants to build a bigger facility in Boulder, including a restaurant, but if this change is not passed, he may be forced to move elsewhere.
