Bear Republic Leaving States

Talk surfaced over the weekend that Bear Republic (Healdsburg, CA) will be pulling out some of their markets.   This was posted to BeerAdvocate:

As of Jan 1 BR is pulling out of midwest markets. They plan to focus on 15-16 “key” markets until they can up their capacity. So if you live in KS, MO and yes even Texas, start stocking up now while you still can.

Here on Monday morning, it doesn’t seem to be 100% accurate.

Missouri – Yes, confirmed by Evan Benn, STL Today

Texas:  Noble Union/Duff Rep that doesn’t want to be named said “not that he has been told.”

Kansas: TBD

Nothing has been officially mentioned by the brewery.  Sit tight and let them clear the air…

Fegley’s Always Sunny

A beer suitable for Paddy’s Pub, Always Sunny Pale Ale.  A year rounder for Allentown Brew Works – makers of the Fegley’s lineup.

The fathers of our nation were very fond of a good tankard of ale.  Dozens of Philadelphia breweries lubricated the Age of Reason, moving men toward and egalitarian philosophy, a rational government and enlightened experiments in science.  But things were perfect by any means – the Liberty Bell has to wait out the British occupation of Philadelphia by hiding in Allentown, and poor Mr. Franklin had to routinely wait out beautiful weather to “wet the kite twine so that it can conduct the electric fire freely.”  Alas, let’s raise a pint, and hope it is Always Sunny… wherever you are

Style: American Pale Ale
Hops:  Summit, Chinook, Cascade
Malts: 2 Row, Carafoam, Caramel

Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft

5.2% ABV

Odell Gets Friek-y On October 24th

On October 24, Odell Brewing gets Friek-y.  Friek returns!  Its a framboise/kriek sour beer, that just took home gold at GABF this year.

“I think this beer best represents our collaborative culture,” said Brendan McGivney, head of production at Odell Brewing. “I cannot think of a beer that had as many hands involved in the process as this one from raspberry picking and cherry squishing to yeast and bug propagation, barrel handling, and 750 ml bottling.”

Friek is aged in oak barrels with Colorado cherries, AND Fort Collins raspberries.  Then there’s the wild yeasts – lactobacillus and pediococcus to funk things up even more.

Expect it in 750ml corked & caged bottles.  In Odell’s 10 state distribution network.  There’s a “FRIEK OUT” party at the tap room on 10/29.  Be a friek, celebrate a gold medal, and get a mouthful of sour. [PressRelease]

The Bruery Celebrates GABF Wins With Birra Basta Release

The Bruery successfully brought home a gold and two silver medals from this year’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO.  Reason for celebration?  The Bruery thinks so!  Tomorrow (Friday) not only will they have a special tap list and firkin at the tasting room, but they will be debuting their newest brew, Birra Basta.

Birra Basta is a beer that was brewed with Pizzeria Basta, Boulder, CO.  The idea for this 8.5% ABV Biere de Garde ale was born over a pizza making session.  Beer and pizza?  Who could ask for more right?  Birra Basta was brewed with roasted zucchini, lemon peel, fennel seeds, and cedar chips.  Six malts (Pilsner, Munich, Six Row, Biscuit, Kiln Amber, Aromatic), two hops (Columbus, Strisselspalt), and a  Belgian house yeast also went into the brew.

ABV: 8.5%

Availablity: Draft only

Stranahan’s Says No To Craft Brewers

Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is making waves in the world of barrel aged beer.  A little over a year ago the small distillery was purchased by Proximo Beverage, a huge conglomerate out of New Jersey who promised to take them global.  They promise that the quality of the whiskey will remain in tact.  (Think Goose Island/InBev)  A couple of weeks ago their Master Distiller, Jake Norris, decided it was time for him to move on from Stranahan’s.  Probably not a good sign right?  But what is this to craft beer?

Stranahan’s has since announced that they will no longer sell their whiskey barrels to breweries outside of the state of Colorado.  Stone Brewing, Cigar City Brewing, and Nebraska Brewing are just a few among the many who have previously aged their brews in these barrels and will no longer be able to do so.  The reason cited – “We were concerned that people from outside of Denver were using them to capitalize on our provenance and terroir.”

Also, breweries are no longer allowed to use the Stranahan’s name on labels.  Interestingly, both Great Divide Old Ruffian Barley Wine and Dry Dock’s Bligh’s Barleywine Ale are both to be released this month and have both been aged in Stranahan’s barrels.  Old Ruffian will display the name on the label while Bligh’s will not.
