High Tech Security Hack Keeps Your Beer Safe

You ever have issues with friends and room mates drinking your precious beer?  You could hide it around the house like alcoholic easter eggs.  I guess a gun safe would work too, but refrigeration is a nightmare.  Let face it.  It’s just not… cool.

The tech savy/hacker/beer enthusiasts at Milwaukee Makerspace are working up a new solution to beer free loaders.  An RFID swipe system.  It’s kind of like the badge you would you use to swipe into your office.  The refrigerator/kegerator is secured by the system.  Using a nokia screen with some custom programming and geek know how, your stash is secure.  Those with a keg fob and access can get to your beer.  The kegerator even uses a flowmeter  to record how much beer was consumed, and by who.

…we are also working on a version that uses an android phone for display, data logging and cloud-connected goodness.

Want.  [MilwaukeeMakerspace]

There It Is! Bud Light Platinum

AdAge back in September mentioned that Bud is interesting in expanding the family of products – namely Bud Light Platinum.   The beer would be a higher alcohol version of it’s predecessor, in the 6%-8% range.

It looks like the project is coming to fruition at 6%.  Even though AB hasn’t made an official press release, a label has surfaced.

The AdAge article Via BeerAdvocate:

A recent AdAge article mentions it briefly in an unrelated topic and suggests it’ll be somewhere between 6% to 8% ABV; Bud Light is currently 4.2% ABV.“And Bud Light might be preparing a new line extension for BudLight called Bud Light Platinum, with a stronger alcohol content by volume ranging from 6% to 8%, according to a report this week by beer trade publication Beer Marketer’s Insights, which cited discussion among distributors.

The website was registered by AB budlightplatinum.com, but the site is not active.

Release: TBA

(Potentially one time only.)

Ball Introducing 568ml Cans

Ball Corporation, the largest maker of cans world, is also the first to make a 568mL can (19.2 oz.) It is being introduced to North America.  This “imperial pint” can is popular in Europe.

The 568 is unique. It’s the height of a 24oz can, while being the diameter of a 16oz can.   Good for distinguishing the product on the shelves.   For earth minded folks, it has the highest amount of recycled content than any other cans in Ball’s lineup.  It is also 100% recyclable.

With craft beer rapidly canning their beer more and more, you might see a brewery pick up this new can style soon.

Tentative: Terrapin “Easy Rider” New Seasonal in 2012

A few hours ago it was mentioned that Terrapin Brewing is putting Sunray Wheat on hiatus, and moving Hop Karma to a 6-month seasonal status.  The first of the new brew news coming out of Athens in 2012 – Easy Rider, filling the seasonal spot for Sunray Wheat.

The name isn’t set in stone, so don’t be surprised if the name changes before it’s all said and done.  Style is also TBA.

No Victory Old Ho In 2012

Victory Brewing’s Old Horizontal Barleywine will not make an appearance in 2012.  As Victory grows, so does the demand for their products.  Why?  Bill Covaleski basically explains it like this:

With most of our beers, we can use the second-runnings of sugar-rich wort (the pre-fermentation liquid from the brew) in the recipe. That is not the case with Old Horizontal, so we have to brew twice as much in order to make half the yield of a “regular” Victory beer. With our brewhouse running at peak capacity, we literally can’t afford the time for our precious Old Horizontal.

There will be some cellared kegs of Old Horizontal hitting tap handles at the pub in 2012.  Dates to be announced.
