So they want to build (another) national beer museum…

Brew: The Museum of Beer is seeking funding on Indiegogo, a crowd funding website. The lofty goal – to build a 50,000 square foot facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Now, you’re on Beer Street Journal right now, so we find very little need to convince you of the need for a museum dedicated to the world’s best beverage. The founder, Joe McAllister, has been working on the beer museum project full time for the past three years.

Brew: The Museum of Beer will span 50,000 square feet, targeting 400,000 visitors a year. Additionally, the site will house a bar, event space, and brewhouse, plus – a gift shop (of course).

The campaign is currently seeking an initial $50,000 dollars in order to take the design to architects to begin the design process. Then the real challenge – the $30 million dollars in funding to build it. Lofty? Indeed.

At the time of this article, the Indiegogo campaign has raised a little over $22,000 dollars.

No word if the museum will sell Terrible Towels on site.

Ed Note: A astute reader noted that an National Brewery Museum exists in Potosi, Wisconsin. Partnered with the American Breweriana Association. One of a few beer related museums in existence.

Saint Arnold Sailing Santa returns November 14th

Saint Arnold Sailing Santa returns for the 2016 season on November 14th.

Sailing Santa is a blend of the brewery’s Christmas Ale and Elissa IPA, with spices added to the brew. Saint Arnold brews Christmas Ale, then Elissa IPA and blend together in the fermenter. They then add spices at the end. Additionally, last year’s edition added Snap hops for an additional spice.

…The result is a pleasantly hoppy strong dark ale with spices. The genesis of this beer came from our customers on tours asking to blend the two beers with somebody coming up with the name Sailing Santa.

Last year we added Snap hops, which is actually a blend of hops, spices and botanicals. We can tell you that the new hop, added at the end of fermentation, adds a ginger snap aroma and a complexity that makes Sailing Santa taste like the holidays.

Saint Arnold was able to acquire Snap hops again this year, making an edition similar to last year’s beer. Saint Arnold Sailing Santa is available in 22oz bottles and draft starting November 14th for a limited time.

Style: IPA (w/ Spices)
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft
Latest Return: 11/14/16

5.7% ABV

Highland Thunderstruck Coffee Porter 2016 release

Highland Thunderstruck Coffee Porter releases again this year, appearing on draft and in their tasting room on October 14th, 2016. Named for the Southern Appalachian landscape, Highland Thunderstruck Coffee Porter features fair trade/organic coffee from Dynamite Roasting Company.

This year’s version will feature both a Mexican dark roast blend and a lighter Honduran blend.

Early in the brewing process, referred to as the hot-side, Highland adds Mexican coffee at the end of the boil, which extracts the flavors much like the way coffee is made at home. Later, on the cold-side part of brewing, Honduran coffee and a portion of the base beer are blended, allowing the coffee to concentrate, after which the hi-test liquid is injected and circulated into each tank.

Highland Brewing Company along with Dynamite Roasting Company, show their dedication to the freshness of this offering by freshly grinding the beans the morning of each brew day.

Shortly after its release in the tasting room, Thunderstruck Coffee Porter will release across Highland’s distribution areas.

Additionally, Highland aims to protect the region that inspired this beer. So for every glass purchased on October 14th, they will donate $1 to Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.

Style: Porter (w/ Coffee)
Hops: Chinook, Hallertau, German Select
Malts: Briess Pale Malt, Briess Caramel 60, Briess Chocolate, Briess Midnight Wheat.
1.5 lbs of coffee per barrel

“With bottling and canning operations, we are in a new chapter. And Gaelic is the right beer to package both ways because of its flexibility – its medium body and balance. Red Brick Brewing is dropping bottles. Almost completely.

Atlanta, Georgia based Red Brick Brewing has decided to eliminate bottles completely from their lineup by the end of the year. At least, as far as they year-round and seasonals go.

In 2014, Red Brick debuted Laughing Skull Amber Ale in cans, a brewery first. The success of the switch was undeniable.

“We continue to focus on sustainability and we feel that cans are a more sustainable option. Aluminum is one of the most widely recycled consumer packages in the United States. In addition, aluminum provides our products complete protection from harmful UV light” – Garett Lockhart, President & Brewmaster

All of Red Brick’s core and seasonal releases will be available in cans by January, 2017. The brewery’s specialty Brick Mason Series will soon transition to 16 ounce cans.

Occasional brewery only releases will be available in bottles in limited quantities.
