Founding Fathers Brewing just released Founding Father Light Beer this week. The second installment in a line of beers from the Minnesota based brewery. 50% of the profits are donated the family of the United States Military.
LONG LAKE, Minn., Feb. 14, 2012 – Founding Fathers Products, a local company that will donate 50 percent of its profits to support military troops and their families, has released Founding Fathers Light Beer in Minnesota and North Dakota.
Founding Fathers Lager, which is brewed in the Unites States, hit the shelves in November and quickly sold its first run of 7,500 cases. Both beers are now available in bottles of six or 12 packs.
“We have been very encouraged by how well Founding Fathers Lager sold in our first run and are excited to add the light beer to our product line,” said Phil Knutsen, founder and CEO. “The largest breweries in the Unites States are now foreign-owned, and Founding Fathers is not only owned and brewed in America – half of our profits will go to those serving in our armed forces and their families.”
In addition to adding the light formula, Founding Fathers is planning to expand its distribution to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee by April.
Founding Fathers is partnering with local military organizations in each state as it launches its beer across the country. In Minnesota, profits will be administered through non-profit organizations Tee it up for the Troops and the Minnesota Military Family Foundation. Nationally, beer profits will be donated to the Armed Forces Relief Trust.
Founding Fathers was established in 2009 by Knutsen and a team of investors who believe retail shelves need more American-made products that serve an important cause.
“While we are starting with beer, the sky’s the limit on what we can accomplish with Founding Fathers Products,” Knutsen said. “We’re very excited about expanding our business model to include additional products and we’re passionate about raising money for our troops.

An Irish runner, (read UBER, psychotic runner), has become the only man to run 7 marathons on 7 continents in less than 5 days. That’s just a tad over 182 miles in total. Richard Donovan of Galway, would drink a Heineken during the race, and one after. The carb content would aid him in the long distance run and recovery. Turns out, the beer was basically the only thing he could keep down.
“I was absolutely wrecked. I wasn’t even able to keep down water,” he said. “We came to desperate measures in Sydney and I chanced a beer. I had one bottle of Heineken during the race, for some carbs, and one at the end of it. It was the first time something stayed down in days.”
The marathon took him from Antarctica to Cape Town, South Africa; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Orlando, US; London, UK; Hong Kong and finally Sydney. [IrishTimes]
Craftcans.com took trip over to Brewery Vivant (Grand Rapids, MI) to chat can beer. The whole interview is great, but this quote about upcoming beer was most interesting. Barrel aged beer in a can? Sour beer? Might happen.
Coming down the can line in 2012 you should see our Double IPA, Belgian Tripel, Belgian Quad, our Barrel Aged Triomphe and maybe a Belgian Style sour. Should be a big year, although many of these will only be available locally since we are doing some small runs.
Perhaps Brewery Vivant & some Goose Island Bourbon County, in a can for the beach?
In a 4 minute video posted by @HopCast, John Laffler speaks briefly of the “Innovation Projects” going on at Goose Island. You’ll be surprised to hear that Goose Island has around 100 beers in the works, and 285 projects. (Not all beer related.)
One of the projects, is about texture of the beer. Manipulating the taste, texture and peoples interpretations. (Sure theres a lot more to that. )
– There are 900 Lolita barrels to be filled this year.
– Goose Island is quadrupling what is probably already the largest barrel aging program in the U.S.-
– This year GI will be ordering 48,000 lbs of raspberries (for barrel aging)
This confirms what we probably already knew. Beer is the preferred alcoholic beverage among Americans. According to The Beer Institute, beer sales totaled a whopping $98 billion dollars in 2011. Thats a 3% increase from on premise (bars, stadiums, etc.) to $55 billion, and a 1% increase in off premise purchases, to the tune of $43 billion. There are an estimated 547,000 beer-selling retail establishments currently operating in the United States.
“Beer continues to be the preferred alcohol beverage of Americans,” said Joe McClain, president of the Beer Institute. “With sales exceeding $98 billion, the beer industry continues to enjoy the largest shareof revenue and volume within the alcohol beverage sectorwhen compared to wine and spirits. While many of our core consumers are still impacted by a slow economic recovery, we are pleased to see a bump in last year’s retail sales, driven by high-end premium domestic and imported beers.”
The strongest consumer base are middle income buyers. The beer industry directly and indirectly supports approximately 1.8 million American jobs. [BI]

As mentioned a month ago, Alan Sprints from Hair of the Dog was chosen as 2012 collaborator with Dirk Naughts and De Proef Brewing. Details on collaboration have surfaced.
SBS Imports founder Alan Shapiro says the beer will be a blend of quintessential Hair of the Dog Fred–a Strong Ale named in honor of local beer guru Fred Eckhardt–named Flanders Fred, a reference to the Flanders Red beer style dubbed “Burgundies of Belgium.” Expect the result to pack a tart cherry sourness and bone-warming boozy heat. It’ll be perfect for aging, too. Too bad we won’t get to try it until this summer, as Sprints won’t actually brew the batch of Fred in Belgium until March.
