Drunkorexia Is Dangerous

Drunkorexia is the non-medical term for not eating before a night of drinking.   The empty stomach isn’t because someone forgot to eat before they went out.  Drunkorexia is intentionally act of foregoing eating to save the calories before drinking to avoid weight gain.

Studies on college campuses in North Carolina, Missouri, & Texas find as many as 21% of students have admitted to not eating before nights of drinking to spare calories.   Female drinkers do this more often then male drinkers.  Celebrities like Amy Winehouse (dead from alcohol poisoning) and Lindsay Lohan have been called (or called themselves) “drunkorexics” in the past.

Restricting calories can limit the necessary nutrition the body needs.  The effect of alcohol can be amplified on an empty stomach.  Longterm drunkorexia can damage cognitive functioning, both while drinking and long after the night ends.   A word to the wise – eat before you booze it up.  Your body will thank you for it.  [StarPress]

Carlsberg 2012 Profits Look Bleak

The world’s 4th biggest brewer is expecting stalled profits in 2012.  They are blaming depressed beer markets in northern & western Europe.

The world’s fourth biggest brewer, which brews Carlsberg, Tuborg, Baltika brands said its 2012 results would be dented by the euro zone crisis hitting beer drinkers and also by a low single-digit percentage rise in its input costs.  “We have taken a cautious view for northern and western Europe, and assume a slightly declining market in 2012,” Chief Financial Officer Jorn Jensen said at an investor presentation.

1/3 of the brewery’s sales come from Russia.  Carlsberg is planning to reverse the falling market by taking full control of the Baltika brand.  The brewery owns all but 15% of the business unit.  Baltika (the official beer supplier of the 2014 Olympics) stock surged nearly 10% on word of the Carlsburg offer.  The deal is expected to be in place by May, 2012. Carlsberg is 4th largest in the world, behind AB-InBev, SAB Miller, and Heineken.  [Reuters]

Oskar Blues & Sun King Create “Chaka”

Oskar Blues Sun King ChakaOskar Blues (Lyon, CO) and Sun King Brewing (Indianapolis, IN) are brewing up a new can collaboration – Chaka.  The beer will be a Belgian style ale with ingredients from both states.  Shagbark hickory syrup will be added from Indiana, and Belgian pale malt from Colorado malting.  Dave Colt from Sun King and Dave Chichura from Oskar Blues have been friends for years.  They met when Colt was working at Circle V Brewing in Indiana.

According to Hoosier Beer Geek, Chaka will be brewed this spring, debuting at the Craft Brewer’s Conference in May.   Oskar Blues & Sun King will brew an edition of Chaka.  Interestingly, Oskar Blues isn’t currently distributed in Indiana.  This collaboration would be the first time the brewery’s beer would hit the state.

Green Flash Accidentally Goes To Idaho. Then Leaves.

Green Flash BrewingAll this was basically an accident.  An Idaho distributor tells a store (specifically Brewforia) that Green Flash will be available in Idaho in the coming weeks.  The store orders Green Flash. ( I mean come on, who wouldn’t.)  Beer hits shelves.

Woah, woah, woah. Wait.  Is Green Flash approved for Idaho?  Nope.  You were mistaken.  How the hell did you get this beer?

It breaks down like this.  (It’s a little he said, she said, but not in a bad way.)

Our distributor sees that another distributor they have a relationship with recently brought in Green Flash. These two distributors regularly buy product from one another for sale in markets where the other one doesn’t have operations so my distributor has a few cases of several Green Flash beers transferred to their warehouse in Northern Idaho.

Because the brewers typically register their beer with the states that they sell in the distributor never checked to see if the product was registered.  To be fair, the state of Idaho does not have a good system to check for registered breweries to begin with so even if they had tried to check, chances are they wouldn’t have gotten the info anyway.  Also, because the relationship with the brewery is with a different distributor, not the one that sold the beer in Idaho there was no line of communication to know whether the beer had been registered for sale in Idaho.

So anyway, we ordered the beer and it showed up on the truck and we put it on the shelves.  A couple days later the brewers rep for Firestone Walker (a brewery also entering the Idaho market in April) came into the store here and saw the bottles on the shelf.  He thought to himself, “I didn’t know Green Flash was in Idaho”, so he called the brewer.  The brewer was obviously perplexed by the fact that his beer was showing up on shelves in states where he did not have a distribution agreement so he set about tracking down exactly how the beer showed up here.  Ultimately he asked that all the beer that was shipped to Idaho be removed from store shelves and so we complied.

With Green Flash’s East Coast manifest destiny ( Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida)  there is a high likely hood that the beer will be available in the state this year.  Just not now.  Sorry Idaho.  [Facebook]
