Help Legalize Homebrewing In Alabama

Charlie Papazian (President of The Brewer’s Association) and Gary Glass (Director, American Homebrewers Association) ask your assistance to help Alabama legalize homebrewing.

Dear Alabama AHA, BA and Support Your Local Brewery Members,

Please help legalize homebrewing in Alabama!

The American Homebrewers Association is working with a group of homebrewers in Alabama to legalize homebrewing in the state.

The Senate Job Creation and Economic Development Committee passed House Bill 354 favorably on Tuesday, May 8, after the bill was reassigned from the Small Business Committee. The bill now must be voted on by the full Senate in order to go to the Governor for signing. The Senate has just three days of this session in which the bill can be heard. If it is not brought to a vote, it will die with the end of this year’s legislative session.

How Can You Help?
Please call the Senator’s office for your district and leave a message with his or her assistant politely asking the Senator to pass HB354 to legalize Homebrewing this session. Given the time constraints, a phone call during business hours is the safest way to ensure your voice is heard in time. Opponents of the bill have already started their phone calls, so we must overwhelm their numbers.

Thank you for your support of homebrewers. Your action will make the difference in whether or not this legislation becomes law. Please forward this message on to any other Alabama residents/businesses that you feel would be interested in supporting this bill.

Sincerely,

Charlie Papazian
President

A Diageo spokesperson: “There was a serious misjudgement by Diageo staff at the awards dinner on Sunday evening in relation to the Bar Operator of the Year Award, which does not reflect in any way Diageo’s corporate values and behaviour.

We would like to apologise unreservedly to BrewDog and to the British Institute of Innkeeping for this error of judgement and we will be contacting both organisations imminently to express our regret for this unfortunate incident.”

Popular Lagunitas Sucks To Be Year Round

Lagunitas is making plans to bump “Lagunitas Sucks” to year round status.   The holiday release that brewed in lieu of Brown Shugga’ was an instant hit.  The IPA’s fan base grew exponentially overnight.   Thanks to a new brewhouse damaged in transit, Lagunitas couldn’t brew Big Hairy Eyeball shortly after Sucks release.  Enter Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Leftovers Ale.   A hit, yet again.

Sucks will return again at the end of 2012.  The brewery will start brewing it year round after the 2012 release.  The package size is yet to be determined.

Undercover Shutdown will most likely return in June, 2012 as soon as the new brewhouse is up and running.

Red Hare Expands, Canning Line Update, & Newbies

Red Hare Brewing (Marietta, GA) just expanded capacity a little bit this year.  Two new fermenters were added a 40 barrel (1,240 gallons) & a 60 barrel (1,860 gallons.)  That’s a grand total of 3,100 gallons of beer fermenting each time they are full.

Red Hare will most likely be first brewery in Georgia to can their beer.   The canning line is on order, slated for delivery in June, 2012.  Cans of Long Day Lager should hit the streets in late July.

The newest creation by the brewery is already flowing in the tap room.  It’s a wheat ale brewed with pineapple juice.
