The Brewers Association, the not-for-profit trade group that tabulates production statistics for U.S. breweries, released its annual lists reporting the top 50 brewing companies in the country, based on 2010 beer sales volume. The two lists are the Top 50 Craft Brewing Companies, comprising small and independent craft brewers,¹ and the Top 50 Overall Brewing Companies. Thirty-six of the top 50 brewing companies are small and independent craft brewing companies.
“At more than 1,700, the number of breweries in the U.S. is higher than any time since the late 1800s,” said Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association. “Beer lovers’ appreciation for American craft brewers and their craft beers continue to grow.”

Flavored malt beverages are not considered beer for the Top 50 rankings.
The Association’s full 2010 industry analysis, which shows regional trends and sales by individual breweries, will be published in the May/June issue of The New Brewer, available May 18.
¹The definition of a craft brewer as stated by the Brewers Association: An American craft brewer is small, independent, and traditional. Small: Annual production of beer less than 6 million barrels. Beer production is attributed to a brewer according to the rules of alternating proprietorships. Flavored malt beverages are not considered beer for purposes of this definition. Independent: Less than 25% of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by an alcoholic beverage industry member who is not themselves a craft brewer. Traditional: A brewer who has either an all malt flagship (the beer which represents the greatest volume among that brewer’s brands) or has at least 50% of its volume in either all malt beers or in beers which use adjuncts to enhance rather than lighten flavor.

New Holland Brewing (SOME WHERE) is releasing the rye variation of of their popular “Mad Hatter” IPA again in May, 2011. Released just once before last year – Rye Hatter is choc full of rye malt.
From New Holland: This beer showcases it’s grain-bill, made up of rye and barley malt. The rye adds a slight spiciness to the caramel-malt base, while also creating a creamy texture. Dry-hopping contributes a fresh citrus finish.
Availability: 22oz bombers. Draft. Vintage dated. Late Spring seasonal.
Food Pairings: Blue cheese, blackened seafood, herb-roasted poultry.
Headed your way in May is a new fruit infused offering from Shipyard Brewing (Portland, ME.) Smashed Blueberry joins the Pugsley’s Signature Series. Shipyard states this beer is a blend between a porter and a scotch ale, with fresh blueberries added.
Taste Expectations (Per Shipyard): This beer has a rich mouth feel and a body of complex intensity. Upfront, there are distinct flavors of coffee and chocolate beautifully accentuated by the aroma of fresh blueberries. The finish features a delicate balance of sweet fruit and dry hops.
Bell’s Adds Bottle Dating. No More Lonely Bottles.
Bell’s Brewing will start adding dates to their bottles this month. It’s not earth shattering news, as much as it is interesting. Currently, every bottle of Bell’s has a batch number that you can enter on their website and find out when the beer was brewed. This new system will still contain the batch code, plus a “shelf life” code. Speculation: Bell’s will issue a code chart corresponding to a suggested shelf life/cellar life. Bells:
Bell’s Brewery is proud to announce that we will begin printing packaging date information directly onto the labels of our beers in late April 2011. We have installed the necessary high-speed printing equipment and are currently fine-tuning the system and conducting final validation checks. This is a step that has been on our minds for some time now, and we are looking forward to having it fully operational soon.
We’ve elected to go with the actual date of packaging rather than a “best before” date.
