Flying Fish Brewing Company will debut (F. U.) Sandy (Forever Unloved) to benefiting the victims in New Jersey of superstorm Sandy. The beer? A hybrid wheat ale / pale ale blend, brewed with experimental hop ADHA 483, donated by the American Dwarf Hop Association.
“At Flying Fish, we proudly hail from the great state of New Jersey, so when tragedy struck, we knew immediately that we wanted to do something to help,” says Muller. “Every single aspect of this beer, from the man-hours spent brewing it to the hops used to season it to the kegs that will contain it, has been donated so every cent brought in goes to Superstorm Sandy victims.”
100 Kegs will be produced, generating $50,000 dollars for Hurricane victim charities. The recipient of the F. U. Sandy funds will be a grassroots NJ-based charitable organization dedicated to Superstorm Sandy relief and chosen by Flying Fish fans via social media. This wheat beer is described as “a turbidity caused by natural yeast in suspension” with “aroma and flavors of banana and clove from a special strain of yeast that produces the chemicals that lead to these perceptions.” One would expect them to launch something a little … heavier … given their style of music, but it seems that these metal bands love to show their softer sides with their choices in beers.

Orange Wheat – Crisp, Tangy, and Refreshing. The citrus aroma, light airy mouthfeel, and tangy finish are this unfiltered beer’s trademarks. This is accomplished by adding whole locally grown oranges throughout the brewing process, which perfectly coalesce with the wheat and barley base.
Helles Lager – Traditional and Sweet. This Munich style Helles bears all its delicacies for you to enjoy with nothing to hide. Sweet candy-like malt sweetness and a hint of German noble hop flavor and aroma is what this craft lager is all about.

One of this year’s winners, James Schrimer, is one of said hopefuls. His beer, the Beerflower Wheat, is described as “an ideal balance of smooth, sweet malt flavors with an exotic kick of citrus and herbal notes. Brewed with hot summer weather and fun gatherings in mind, this American wheat beer pours a dark amber color, and imparts a light floral and sweet aroma with the delicate flavors of hibiscus. Beerflower Wheat is a medium bodied brew that finishes crisp and refreshing on the palate.”
