Old Dominion “Candi” Coming Soon

Fordham Candi

Old Dominion Brewing will soon release Candi, a Belgian-style Tripel. The double entendre you’ll see is Candi (the pretty lady on the label) and candi sugar, used in the brew. Candi is part the brewery’s “Bomber Girls” series.

Look for this beer in 22oz bottles in September.

A new can is in the works. A new collaboration between 21st Amendment (San Francisco) and Elysian (Seattle, WA). He Said is a new spin on a Belgian style tripel with the addition of pumpkin. After doing a little research, you’d be hard pressed to find one like this. This is actually 1 of 2 in a series of collaborations between the west coast breweries. The latter is a Baltic porter.

21st Amendment will can this 8.2% ABV offering. Try tailgating all day with this one.

After 4 Years, Left Hand St. Vrain Returns

Left Hand’s (Longmont, CO) Belgian tripel is back after 4 years. 2009 was the last time you could but St. Vrain- named for the river the flows near the brewery in Colorado. This tripel is light bodied, fruity, and of course, chock full of alcohol.  The artwork (seen above) has been updated for 2013’s release.

The beer pours a brilliant gold with aromas of tropical fruit, spicy pepper, and bubble gum. Bottle conditioned for a truly monastic feel, St. Vrain bubbles effervescently with a fluffy white head.  First sips open with light malt and a honey-like sweetness tempered by mint and peppery flavors, transitioning to herbal hoppy notes and a slightly nutty finish redolent of chestnuts. The finish is warming and dry, with a slight lingering bitterness.

Style: Belgian-style Tripel
Availability: 22oz bottles, Draft. All 27 Left Hand ship states

Southern Tier Imperial Compass Added To Spring Lineup

Southern Tier Imperial Compass

Look out for this Spring from a new sparking imperial offering from Southern Tier Brewing (Lakewood, NY). Imperial Compass joins Plum Noir in new offerings this year. Compass is a bottle conditioned (expect lots of bubbles), with a hint of rose hips.

We rely on age-old tools in the brewery despite being surrounded by high technology. As sort of compass, we use the six pointed brewer’s star to help ravigate uncharted brews. The cardinal points of water, malt. grain, yeast, hops and a brewer make the baseline. From there anything goes. Sometimes the journey is as Important as the destination.

You’ll notice s slight bittemess In Compass derived from our use of rose hips accentuated by high effervescence. Drink it cold from a fluted or tulip glass and by all means, avoid sea serpents!

Style: Sparkling Ale (Tripel? w/ Rose Hips)
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft
Arrival: Spring, 2013
