Allagash Celebrates 10 Years of Curieux

Allagash Brewing’s (Portland, ME) Curieux has just turned 10. To celebrate a decade of success with the bourbon barrel aged tripel, Allagash is releasing a special 1.5 liter bottle, and unveiling a special contest.

The bottle (seen above) is limited to a run of just 1,000. The contest? Well that requires your creativity. Allagash Curieux fans can submit a video of less than 3 minutes, showing off their love of the beer. After the deadline, fans can vote for their top 5 favorites on the brewery’s Facebook page.  Grand prize is a trip for two to the brewery in Portland to be a part of the making of this beer firsthand. The contest runs October 15th – November 5th.

“In the spring of 2004 we decided to get a few freshly emptied bourbon barrels and try our hand at barrel aging beers,” said Rob Tod, founder and brewer at Allagash Brewing Company.  “Curious about what would result, we decided to try our Tripel.”

Throughout October, Allagash will hold special barrel-aged events around the country with members from the brewery. The beer lineup includes Curieux, James Bean, Odyssey, Bourbon Barrel Black, and more.

Troegs Nebulous Joins Splinter Series

Troegs Nebulous Barrel Aged Triple Ale

Troegs Brewing (Hershey, PA) Splinter Series grows with the coming addition of Nebulous Barrel Aged Triple Ale. The brewery is taking another offering, LaGrave Tripel Ale, refermented it with Brettanomyces yeast, then barrel aged it.

Nebulous begins its journey with a vague sense of direction, but with a specific destination in mind. Originating from the roots of LaGrave, this barrel-aged Triple Ale was re-fermented with Brettanomyces to release a subtle tartness punctuated with hints of vanilla, toasted coconut, and wet hay. Bottle conditioned and highly carborated, simply pop the cork, pour into a chalice and savor!

Troegs Nebulous will be released in 12.7oz bottles.

Style: Belgian-style Tripel (w/ Brett. Barrel Aged)
Availability: 12.7oz Bottles
Arrival: TBA

Red Brick Plans Rum Barrel Tripel

Back in November, we mentioned that Georgia based Richland Rum has expanded. Then the same token, we mentioned that a local brewery might be sourcing rum barrels for a new beer.

Now, we aren’t saying these are Richland Rum barrels (yet), but it is a little coincidental.  Red Brick Brewing is currently sourcing barrels for their next Brick Mason release, Three Bagger Tripel. Once the barrels are in place, the brewery will age Three Bagger in rum barrels.

Beer Street Journal videos to follow.

This month, Red Brick will blend their Beard Envy Barleywine. The beer has been aging for nearly six months in tertiary use Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels.
