It’s Surly Darkness Day…

Okay, here is your Surly Darkness Day 2011 update.

A bunch of people have been lined up since before dawn.  They are drinking awesome beers, many already buzzing.  The line by 8:45 am was 2x as long as it was last year.

All the wristbands for Darkness, the bell of the ball, have all been given out.  No wristband? You can buy up to 4 bottles starting 4pm.

What’s pouring?  Check out the sheet above. It’s like you’re really there right? Maybe not.  Check out what people are saying.

Alaskan Brewing Heads To Wisconsin

Alaskan Brewing recently sent out a press release about their 25 Anniversary Ale – Perseverance.  It lands on September 1st.  Even more exciting than an anniversary ale is that Alaskan will soon be distributing to Wisconsin.  Per the release:

We are thrilled to represent Alaskan Brewing Co’s award-winning beers in our markets,” says Mike Frank, President of Middleton’s Frank Beer Distributing, one of Alaskan’s Wisconsin partners.

With the addition of Wisconsin, Alaskan’s second new market entry since 2008, Alaskan beer will be available in a total of 12 states. Alaskan will be entering Wisconsin with their Gold Rush-era inspired Alaskan Amber. Alaskan IPA and White Ale will be available in mid-September, a number of their year-round and seasonal beers will be available in kegs and caseware in the state later this fall.

Perseverance Ale is a Russian Imperial Stout brewed with Alaska birch syrup, fireweed honey and alder-smoked malt — a tribute to all that makes Alaskan beers truly Alaskan.  Available in 22 oz bombers.

(Juneau, AK) — Beer drinkers in Wisconsin will be able to celebrate the Labor Day holiday with brews from the state of 100,000 glaciers when Alaskan Brewing brings their bottled “taste of Alaska” to the Badger State this September. Alaskan Brewing Co. is partnering with six local distributors to help share the products throughout the state.

“We are thrilled to represent Alaskan Brewing Co’s award-winning beers in our markets,” says Mike Frank, President of Middleton’s Frank Beer Distributing, one of Alaskan’s Wisconsin partners.

This year the Juneau-based Alaskan Brew Crew celebrates their 25th year of handcrafting award-winning beers brewed with the historic recipes and local ingredients of the Last Frontier.

“We are excited to celebrate our anniversary with a hop over the Mississippi to share our beers with Alaskan fans in Wisconsin,” says Alaskan Brewing Co-Founder Marcy Larson.

Alaskan Brewing will be posting news and announcements about launch events and activities at Facebook.com/AlaskanBrewingCoWI and AlaskanBeer.com as they get closer to the September release.

Palate Restructuring Now In Bottles

New Albanian Thunderfoot

New Albanian Thunderfoot

New Albanian Brewing (New Albany, IN) is releasing Thunderfoot in bottles.  According to NA, the current recipe includes dried tart cherries, bing cherries in oak, and aged a year.  The label doesn’t mention the aging or additions, in either case – a highly prized imperial stout.

Label:
There can be no doubt: Thunderfoot actively renounces the gentle tweak, the mild revision and the imperceptible hint.  Thunderfoot neither seeks to make a plausible case for adaptive reuse, nor can be bothered with the nuances of historical preservation.  Thunderfoot puts its elongated foot squarely down, advocating your palate’s restructuring the old fashioned way – whole cloth, complete, irresistible, certain and inevitable.

Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Hops:  Northern Brewer, Willamette
Malts: Simpsons Golden Promise, Roast Barley, Dark Crystal, Flaked Oats
Yeast: House Ale
Adjuncts: Sugar

Availability: 220z bombers, draft.

Marshal Zhukov’s New Label, New Jose Marti Version

Marshal Zhukov's New Label

Marshal Zhukov's New Label

In keeping with the 750 ml label updates, it is Marshal Zhukov’s turn.   Recently, news broke that Cigar City was releasing barrel aged editions of Big Sound Scotch Ale, and Hunahpu.  There are barrel aged editions of Zhukov, perhaps soon.

Label:
This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to George Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II.  Opaque black in color, with notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of blackstrap molasses. The English hop varietals provide subtle herbal dryness, and finishes with a hearty slap of roasty espresso.  Pair Marshal Zhukov’s with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia.

Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Availability: 750ml bottles, Draft.

New Jose Marti Version

There is also a Jose Marti variation – this one aged on oak spirals.  Tentatively slated for a Rare Beer Club offering only…

Label:
I wish to leave the world by its natural door; In my tomb of green leaves they are to carry me to die.   Do not put me in the dark to die like a traitor; I am good, and like a good thing I will die with my face to the sun. – A Morir [To Die] (1894)

Style: American Porter
