Yeastie Boys Hit U.S.

Yeastie Boys Pot Kettle BlackNew beer from New Zealand hitting American shelves – Yeastie Boys Pot Kettle Black, and Digital IPA.   Let’s get acquainted with the Yeasties.
It’s 2 guys – Stu McKinlay, and Sam “The Grandmaster” Possenniskie.  Not only are they taking NZ by storm, but now the United States.  First up – Pot Kettle Black.  Somewhere between a hoppy porter and a black IPA.

Pot Kettle Black is our multi-award winning ‘Black IPA’ (that some call a ‘Hoppy Porter’). The different names convey the fact that this beer is a contradiction of styles: fresh and hoppy, yet dark and rich. Most importantly it is mindbendingly delicious and a complete original. Like all Yeastie Boys beer is is painstakingly crafted by people who love beer., then conditioned to optimum ripeness, before making its way into a bottle and then to your hands. Now take the next step and enjoy with thoughtful consideration.

Style: Porter
Hops: Nelson Sauvin, Stryian Golding NZ Cascade
Malts: NZ Pale, Melanoiden, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent
Yeast: American “Chico” Ale

Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition.  Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor. Batch #1

Style: Hoppy Porter? IPA (ish)Hops: Saaz, Zeus, Ahtanum, Simcoe
Malts: Two Row Harrington, Metcalfe, Copeland Pale, Carafa I, Caramel 60, Munich
Yeast: Lager

Twisted Pine North Star Imperial Porter Returns

Twisted Pines North Star Imperial Porter Returns….

Boulder, Colorado — November 21st 2011 — As winter settles in around Boulder, Colorado, fans of Twisted Pine Brewing Company are bristling with the excitement that surrounds the annual release of the brewery’s Northstar Imperial Porter. The Baltic-style porter will make its 2011 debut on December 1st to a select few ticket holders for the vertical tasting which coincides yearly with the beer’s release. The highly regarded ale will be available to the public at large beginning December 2nd.

Northstar, which carries a 98 on ratebeer.com, is black as a moonless night and gives off an aroma of toffee and dark fruit laced with licorice. Once the porter hits the palate, the tongue dances to notes of chocolate-covered raisins which harmonize well with subtle traces of roasted nuts and molasses. The beer is dry enough to punctuate the flavors with a crisp finish, while just silky enough to leave a stamp of the epic experience behind for a while. An ABV of 9.1% provides a slight warming glow that grows up the chest as the ale drops in the glass. Northstar was awarded a gold medal at the 2010 Colorado State Fair, a silver in the 2006 World Beer Cup, and a bronze in 2008’s State Fair.

A great beer for the cellar, Northstar ages gracefully, which has led to the increasing popularity and decreasing availability of tickets for the brewery’s fourth annual vertical tasting. Starting with the 2004 vintage, participants will have the opportunity to sample nearly every version since, plus a few other porter varieties that the brewers have created for the occasion, all tastefully paired with small bites of food, cleverly crafted for accompaniment by the Twisted kitchen.

In addition to state-wide availability in Colorado, this year’s Northstar will find its way to Texas, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, Nebraska and Louisiana. Visit  http://twistedpinebrewing.com  for more information on Twisted Pine and Northstar Imperial Porter.

Based in Boulder, Colorado Twisted Pine Brewing Company has been handcrafting beer since 1995. They are the brewers of such favorites as “Hoppy Boy IPA,” “Raspberry Wheat Ale” and “Billy’s Chilies.” The Ale House is a very popular local hangout and boasts 17 taps, 5 rotating. Twisted Pine is active with local charitable organizations and a strong believer in sustainable business practices. You can find more information at  http://www.twistedpinebrewing.com

Somerville Brewing Starts Up In Massachusetts

Slumbrew Flagraiser IPASomerville Brewing Company has officially started their brewing operations.  The brand is called  Slumbrew.

Who?

Caitlin Jewell & Jeff Leiter.  It is the result of 2 years of preparation, travel, and research at some of the United States innovative breweries.  (About 10,000 miles worth of travel.)

Where?
A true nano brewery.  “The Brewlab”

350 square feet in Somerville, Massachusetts.  Once the recipe is refined and ready, it is upscaled to a larger recipe, brewed locally at commercial breweries in MA.  Currently, these beers are being brewed at Mercury Brewing.

The Beers:

Flagraiser IPA – American IPA.  A hoppy IPA dedicated to one of the first Grand Union flag raisings atop Prospect Hill in Somerville

Happy Sol — A hefeweizen brewed with local MA honey, coriander, orange peel and over 1,000 blood oranges

Porter Square Porter — A malty chocolate porter brewed with cocoa powder and conditioned with cacao nibs from the local Taza Chocolate company.

What’s in the name?

The name is a snarky throwback to the term ‘Slummerville’ because, as with the relationship between craft beer and large macro beers of the last century, the modern city of Somerville is nothing like its former days.

Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft. Through Arborway Imports.

Launch Party: 11/4, t The Independent Restaurant  5-8pm
