Spotlight: Terrapin Poivre Potion Saison, Side Project Series #25

Terrapin Poivre Saison bottle

Over the winter, Beer Street Journal got the unique opportunity to judge Terrapin’s employee brew-off. Each team of employees created not only a recipe, but had to present a skit to the crowd selling the beer. The winner -Terrapin Poivre Potion Saison.

Like other employee brew-off winners, the Terrapin Poivre Potion Saison features pink peppercorns that spices up this saison.

Traditional beers with a twist on their style has been a Terrapin ritual since the beginning. In keep up with traditional, our 2015 employee beer Terrapin Poivre Potion dry hopped imperial pink peppercorn saison, fits the bill. Brewed with pink peppercorns for a complex spice, and dry hopped for some extra aroma , this multifaceted beer will keep you guessing on which flavor comes next.

Terrapin Poivre Potion Saison is available in 22 ounce bottles, a part of the brewery’s Side Project Series.

Beer Street Journal tasting notes: Side Project #25 upscaled nicely from the employee test batch we chose in the competition earlier this year. Wild Heaven White Blackbird Canning, Oct 20th

Wild Heaven White Blackbird Cans

Wild Heaven White Blackbird, the brewery’s saison, will be the 2nd can in their canning history on October 20th.

A little on Wild Heaven White Blackbird. If I’ve said it once, I’ll said it 1,000 times, it won’t be, and isn’t just a saison. This beer (that has never seen anything besides draft) uses pink peppercorns, Korean pears marinated in Chardonnay (oh, we aren’t done) aged on French oak.

Our Belgian Saison is brewed with generous amounts of pink peppercorns to accentuate the herbal, earthy, spicy notes of this amazing yeast. Korean pears marinated in Chardonnay are added to fermentation along with French oak. The result is a host of savory flavors melding together into a wonderful new spin on a well-known style. Finishes dry with woody earthy hints and elegantly well rounded fruit and spice notes.

Wild Heaven White Blackbird is already a draft offering, and will be a 12 ounce can offering, thanks to Toucan Mobile Canning. In your hands by November 1.

Style: Saison (w/ Pink Peppercorns, Pears. Wine Oak Aged.)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft. Year-round offering.

Jester King Coquetier, A Sazerac Inspired Offering

Jester King Coquetier is a new barrel aged aged offering on sale at the brewery starting tomorrow.

The brandy barrel aged farmhouse ale is brewed with cubeb peppercorns, anise seed, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Jester King Coquetier grabs its inspiration from the traditional New Orleans cocktail, Sazerac.

Lemon zest recalls the cocktail’s traditional garnish, a thin sliver of lemon peel resting on the rim of the glass. The beer was aged in French brandy barrels, as the cocktail originally called for Cognac brandy.

Jester King Coquetier was brewed in April of 2014. The beer was first fermented in stainless steel using the the brewery’s unique blend of micro-organisms. After stainless, Coquetier was aged in 600 liter French brandy barrels for seven months before being refermented in bottles.

Stone Chai-Spiced Imperial Russian Stout, For Odd Years Release

Stone Chai-Spiced Imperial Russian Stout

Stone Chai-Spiced Imperial Russian Stout is the newest addition to the brewery’s Odd Beers for Odd Years offering, alongside Extra Hoppy Barleywine.

Past Odd Years offerings for Imperial Russian Stout have included Espresso Imperial Russian Stout, and Belgo Anise Imperial Russian Stout.

As you have probably deduced, this edition is inspired by chai tea. To achieve this nuance, Stone has added clove, ginger, black pepper, cardamom, black tea, and cinnamon to the bold imperial stout.

As it stands, the classic version of Stone Imperial Russian Stout is deep, dark, rich, roasty and perhaps even a bit sinful. The ‘Odd Beers for Odd Years’ part of the journey means the coming of each odd-numbered year provides the opportunity to take this traditional beer to new and mysterious places, embarking on an exploratory odyssey enabled by strikingly flavorful elements applied to a lovely onyx canvas. This beer, the latest ‘Odd’ transubstantiation, takes inspiration straight from the spice aisle, incorporating array of ingredients assembled to emulate the flavors of authentic chai tea. Cinnamon, cardamom, clove, ginger, a dash of black pepper and a dose of black tea combine with Stone Imperial Russian Stout’s incumbent flavors to take it deep into exotic, previously unfathomed tenitory. Expect a touch of earthiness in combination with a warm, tantalizing aridness. Asa one-time brew with enduring character, Stone CHAI-SPICED Imperial Russian Stout is crafted to be contemplated fresh or cellared under proper conditions for many years so that it may live on not only in one’s memory, but on his or her taste buds as well.
