Epic Armageddon. Barrel Aged. All 18th Century Like.

Epic Brewing (New Zealand) took Armadeggeon IPA and put it into oak barrels.  Now headed stateside.  It started off with 2 tiny wood barrels so tasty it turned into a bottling run.

Label:
In the beginning, there was Armageddon. Then an impish brewer put the beer in new oak barrels to age it for 8 weeks. This was to reproduce the original IPA of the 18th century. It may be too huge for this fragile planet so enjoy this beer like it was the last one on Earth.

Press Release

(Tadcaster, UNITED KINGDOM) — Merchant du Vin and Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery are proud to announce the third U.S. annual release of Samuel Smith’s Yorkshire Stingo.

This barrel-aged, bottle-conditioned strong ale expresses the elegant refinement of every Samuel Smith’s beer, but with depth, length and power found in no other beer. This is a must-try beer: Extreme meets over 250 years of brewing experience. In November 2010, DRAFT Magazine awarded Stingo a perfect 100-point review: “Perfection in a glass.”

Vintage dated, Stingo is available nationally each year on England’s “Yorkshire Day,” August first. Annual releases do vary — this year, Stingo fermented to 8.0% ABV. Production of this fine ale is extremely limited.

A traditional strong ale that originated in the north of England, “Stingo” is mentioned in literature before 1700. Samuel Smith’s Stingo melds the signature elegance of the brewery’s ales with a long historical tradition. Brewed from British malts and multiple hop varieties, Stingo is fermented in open-topped stone Yorkshire Squares, then aged over a year in oak barrels that previously held cask-conditioned ale, gaining subtle complexity from the wood. Some of the barrels at Samuel Smith’s are over a century old — if a cask is damaged, the coopers carefully replace broken staves and put the cask back into service.

Samuel Smith’s Stingo shows rich, superb flavors of toffee, raisin, dried fruit, and caramel; waves of flavor ascend and ebb leaving soft oak notes. Hops add a perfect enhancement to dramatic malt and fermentation flavors, but without pushing bitterness past the point of balance. Bottle conditioning — that is, including live yeast in each bottle — produces soft carbonation, a fruity aroma and finish, and allows Stingo to age and develop in the bottle.

21A Hop Crisis Now In Cans

21st Amendment Brewing’s Hop Crisis is now available in cans.  Once a draft only product, first brewed a couple of years ago when hop prices were through the roof, this beer is the one of the hoppiest in cans yet.  Hop Crisis follows Monk’s Blood, both part of the Insurection Series by 21A. They are occasional releases.  It’s a huge imperial IPA, with oak aging to round things out.
“We really wanted to do something different with an Imperial IPA. Aside from the higher alcohol and intense hop bitterness, we felt aging the beer on oak would add some additional layers of flavor. Because oak can overwhelm the hops, we chose a light, subtle oak character to accentuate the dry hop bitterness and add a unique character to the beer.”
Style: Imperial IPA

Taste Expectations: Full of hops: grapefruit, pine, citrus.  Hops are fresh & chewy. Oak & malt fight for dominance & add complexity.

Availability: 12oz/4pk cans. Draft. CA, OR, WA, AK, ID, MN, OH, MA, NY, NJ, DC, MD, PA, VA, and GA.

9.7% ABV

Full Press Release

(San Francisco, CA) — 21st Amendment founders Nico and Shaun need to break out of Alcatraz. And fast. The Hop Syndicate is hoarding hops in a remote warehouse, depriving the People of their right to hoppy, aromatic beer. This is Not Cool. Shaun and Nico have to do something. They need to Free the Hops!

21st Amendment Brewery today announced the release of Hop Crisis, an oak-aged Imperial IPA with big malt flavor at 9.7% alcohol by volume and 94 IBUs (International Bittering Units — that’s bitter!). A few years ago, when hop prices shot through the roof and many brewers were forced to skimp on hops, the folks at 21A decided there was only one thing to do. They made a bigger, hoppier IPA and then aged it on oak for good measure.

21st Amendment co-founder and Brewmaster Shaun O’Sullivan says of the idea behind the beer, “We really wanted to do something different with an Imperial IPA. Aside from the higher alcohol and intense hop bitterness, we felt aging the beer on oak would add some additional layers of flavor. Because oak can overwhelm the hops, we chose a light, subtle oak character to accentuate the dry hop bitterness and add a unique character to the beer.”

“The graphics on our four-pack box tell the story of convicts Nico and Shaun’s adventure to Free the Hops,” noted co-founder Nico Freccia. “A daring escape through the sewer pipe, surfing monster waves while being chased by a great white shark and a high speed getaway on the San Francisco cable car are all part of the adventure,” he adds. “We just really felt we had an opportunity to have some fun with this beer.”

Last year, Hop Crisis won the silver medal at the 2010 Great American Beer Festival in the “Imperial IPA” category against some stiff competition (the third largest of all categories with 96 entries).

Hop Crisis is the second installment (after the highly acclaimed Monk’s Blood) in the 21st Amendment’s Insurrection Series, a limited edition, once-in-a-while, four-pack release of a very special beer that rises up in revolt against common notions of what canned beer can be.

Hop Crisis is available in four-pack cans and on draft starting June 16 at better bars and stores in all fifteen of 21st Amendment’s current distribution territories, which include CA, OR, WA, AK, ID, MN, OH, MA, NY, NJ, DC, MD, PA, VA, and GA. For up to date availability, events and promotions, visit 21A’s website at www.21st-Amendment.com.
About 21st Amendment Brewery

Who the heck are these guys? Hey, we’re Nico & Shaun. We live for great beer. In 1920, there were thousands of breweries across America making unique hand-crafted beer. The passage of Prohibition wiped out this great culture. After thirteen years without beer, the states ratified the 21st Amendment, ending Prohibition in America. At the 21st Amendment Brewery, we celebrate the right to brew beer, the freedom to be innovative, and the obligation to have fun.

Odell Woodcut No. 5 Debuts At Savor

Odell Brewing will be debuting the 5th Edition in their “Woodcut” series at Savor in Washington D.C. this year. Each edition is different, 2011 brings you a Belgian Quad.  The series is so named because each barrel features freshly cut American oak barrels that the new beer will age in.

Press Release

Savoring Woodcut No. 5
Odell Brewing to release newest Woodcut offering at SAVOR

Fort Collins, CO. — On June 3, 2011, Odell Brewing will debut Woodcut No. 5, an oak aged Belgian Quadruple, at SAVOR: An American Craft Beer and Food Experience in Washington D.C. Woodcut No 5 will be the second offering Odell Brewing has released at the event, which is now in its fourth year.

“Every Woodcut offering is uniquely aged in the luxury of brand new toasted oak,” said Brent Cordle, who manages the barrel aging program at Odell Brewing. “The toasted oak and vanilla, along with the Belgian banana and clove flavors, will pair well at the esteemed SAVOR event, an event only fit for a beer like Woodcut No. 5.”

A Quadruple Ale brewed with a blend of Belgian ale yeast and our house ale yeast, Woodcut No. 5 presents a rich, spicy dried fruit essence and a deep auburn color. Vanilla from the New American Oak complements the Special B malt with hints of cherry, raisin and plum on the palate. SAVOR chefs will pair the beer with “Biscuit n’ Belly,” a braised pork belly on a buttermilk biscuit with mustard greens. According to the chefs, “the bitter mustard greens tame the big quad with the smokey middle transforming the pork belly into a more bacon like state.”

Odell Brewing will also mark the release of Woodcut No. 5 with a celebration in the brewery’s Tap Room from 4-6 p.m. on June 4, 2011. To commemorate the release, limited edition, signed and numbered woodcut prints by local artist Chris Bates will be available for purchase.

Founded in 1989, Odell Brewing was started by Doug Odell, his wife Wynne, and his sister Corkie. Twenty-one years later, the culture of family and collaboration still thrives fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted, innovative brews. In 2010 the brewery completed its fourth expansion, adding a wood-aging cellar, a 750 ml bottling line, and a 76 kilowatt photovoltaic system capable of providing 25% of the brewery’s peak energy demand. As a regional craft brewery, Odell Brewing is committed to serving the communities in which it distributes by sourcing local raw materials, and through its charitable giving program known as Odell Outreach. Odell Brewing was recently named a “Top Company of 2010” by ColoradoBiz Magazine and is an award winning brewery, nationally and internationally: 2010 North American Beer Awards — gold medal for Woodcut No. 3. 2009 BrewNZ Awards — gold for 5 Barrel Pale Ale. 2008 World Beer Cup® — gold for IPA. 2007 Great American Beer Festival® — gold medal for IPA.

A Witching Edition To Sam Adam’s Barrel Room

The 13th Hour is the Witching Hour, AND A TIME WHEN STRANGE BREWS CAN OCCUR.

With 13 ingredients, we combined the roasted chocolate and coffee notes of a stout with the complex spicy character of a Belgian-Style ale aged in oak for a dark, robust, and bewitching brew.

One of our brewers’ favorite places to experiment is in the barrel room at our Boston Brewery.   It’s here that each of our Samuel Adams Barrel Room Collection brews was born.
