Terrapin Brewing’s seasonal release “Rye-Squared from the Monster Beer Tour ships mid February. Terrapin Brewer “Spike” loves rye, and this big IPA has it in abundance. The description says it all:
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one!
A beer that needs no introduction has arrived. Bell’s Brewing’s now infamous imperial IPA has shipped and is hitting stores nationwide. (Many places in the U.S. already have received shipments.
Commercial Description: Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repetoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.
Style: Imperial IPA
Taste Expectations: Big fresh hops. Citrus, pine & grapefruit. The bitterness is lessened the honey, giving a caramel- sweet finish.
Availability: 12oz/6 pks. Draft. New for 2011, Party cans. Early seasonal each year.
Sierra Nevada Brewing’s newest release – Hoptimum has arrived! Hoptimum is a hoppy whole cone imperial IPA.
Backstory from SN: A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put –Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.
Resinous “new-school” and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit–all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.
Style: Imperial IPA Hops: Bitter – German Magnum. Aroma/Dry – Simcoe & new secret strain. Malts: 2 Row Pale, Golden Promise, Munich & Wheat Yeast: Ale
Terrapin’s Georgia Theatre Series #4 Hoptaneous Combustion Arrives
The 4th and final release in Terrapin Brewing’s Georgia Theatre Series has arrived. Just under the wire in 2010! Just a couple of weeks ago, “Sound Czech” hit shelves weeks after it was expected. (Boxing these beers by hand takes time!) This release essentially remembers a tragic point in the Athens, Georgia landmark’s long history – the fire that nearly completely destroyed it. Love hops & smoke? Drink this. Soon.
Commerical Description: A nod to the the tragic fire and a look into the future.
Style: Imperial IPA Hops: Warrior, Nugget, Centennial, Simcoe Malts: 2 Row, Weyermann Smoke, Best Munich, Pale Crystal

The most recent creation in SweetWater Brewing’s “Dank Tank” is popping up. “Border Hopper” is an imperial IPA brewed using citra hops that have recently become popular. SweetWater hopped this beer with fresh hops from the heart of hop territory in the U.S. – Yakima, Washington.
Commercial Description: Border Hopper, with a little help from their friend, Señor Dank, who left his wife, Lupa, and their eight screaming babies in search of the freshest hop harvest in the land and the promise fields of Buford Highway. His censored journey began in the hop fields of Yakima where he scored some of the stickiest, freshest green hops, found a farmer’s daughter, and ended up in Atlanta where he deals his stash to us boys at SweetWater to create this highly aggressive, censored, and muy fresh double India pale ale.
This brew is pushing the envelope as our newest addition to the series of rarely released, experimental beers. The double IPA, brewed with fresh Citra hops, is 8.6 percent ABV, comes in 22 ounce bottles and on draft and is best served fresh. But act fast because this stash won’t last forever. Just like that rash you got in Tijuana, the Border Hopper will be gone just as soon as the next brewing itch needs to be scratched.
Taste Expectations: Hops give the beer a pineapple, & citrus. Almost tropical fruit flavor. Light malts sweeten the deal a bit, making this a very aggressive, hoppy, delicious IPA.
Availability: 22oz bombers. Draft. One time limited Dank Tank release.
8.6% ABV

The last edition in Terrapin’s Georgia Theatre Sessions beers is coming soon. These beers (4 in all) are meant to commemorate the beloved Athens, Georgia landmark, and benefit it’s rebuild. Each beer in this series has highlighted a part of the theater’s history – from when it was a YMCA, a movie theater, and it’s current fame – a music venue. This last beer “Hoptaneous Combustion” remembers the fire that gutted it. Hoptaneous will be a smoked imperial IPA.
Smoke? Yes. According to the brewery, this ipa will have some smoky flavor/malts. It already sounds interesting. Also, this beer will have a lucky golden ticket like it’s predecessors. The ticket give the holder and a guess free entry to the rebuilt Georgia Theatre for life!
Style: Smoked Imperial IPA
Availability: 22oz Bombers. Bottles are hand numbered & boxed. Rare casks.
