Update 6/25/14: The Bruery has issued a recall on Couverteur, after variations in pH indicating potential infection.

“Your satisfaction with your membership in our Hoarders and Reserve Societies is one of our highest priorities. And we thank you for being part of our world. Believe us when we say that we hate it when our beers don’t turn out as we expected. The Bruery is a labor of love and it hurts us personally when we have to fall on our sword and admit to a fault in our beer, but we never want to release a beer that we don’t steadfastly believe in.

Just to note again, refunds for bottles and shipping fees will be automatically processed beginning next week. We will not be fulfilling any pending orders for Couverteur.”

The Alesmith/Cigar City “Dubbel Coast” Collab

Just a bit more on the upcoming Alesmith/ Cigar City Brewing collaboration, Dubbel Dare. The brewery travelled down to Tampa recently to create a tropical collaboration.

The result is this 80’s throwback, Dubbel Dare suitable for a physical challenge. When you think about Florida, you think beaches right? Coconuts, palm trees, etc? There’s the inspiration for a tropical Belgian-style dubbel. Coconut palm sugar was used in place of candi sugar. Deglet Noor dates and Black Mission figs were added to the fermentation. An abbey yeast strain rounds out the flavor. Now you have a “dubbel coast” collaboration.

Cigar City will bottle this in 750ml bottles for Florida distribution.

Style: Dubbel (w/ Coconut Palm Sugar, Deglet Noor Dates, Black Mission Figs)
Availability: 25.4oz Bottles
Arrival: TBA

Stubborn Beer is Trying to Be Troeg’s Next Splinter

Troegs Splinter Brown

A new “color” will join Troegs Brewing Company’s (Hershey, PA) Splinter lineup. The colorful series of big beers currently has four entries- Black, Red, Gold, and Blue. The story of this brew started two years ago with a dubbel (Scratch #34) that wouldn’t re-ferment in the bottle. The never say die brewers placed this grumpy brew in wine barrels, and crossed their fingers for future plans.

Since then, the brewers have worked on using different yeasts on #34, and at one point tried to bottle it. That didn’t work out so well either. Earlier this year, the barrels of stubborn #34 were sampled again, to reveal a fantastic brett character (good flavor by the yeast.) What’s up with it now? Carbonating. Perhaps this beer will finally shape up and cooperate to it can see the big show. Public release.

Style: Dubbel (Barrel Aged, Wine Barrels. w/ Brett)
Availability: 750ml bottles, Corked & Caged
Arrival: TBA
