Dogfish Bluesy Offering Finds Glasses

Dogfish Head has brewed up another musical offering in the same spirit of Bitches Brew with “Hellhound On My Ale.”  The beer is a tribute to Robert Johnson, an amazing blues musician & guitarist.  Legend has it Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for is voice & talent.  May 8, 2011 marks the 100 birthday of Johnson, who is suspected to have been poisoned at 27 years old.

What you need to know:
A collaboration with Sony, Hellhound is full of homages surround Robert Johnson’s life.  Mentioned in a previous post, DFH was experimenting with lemons.  Seems Hellhound might be the result.  Why lemons? Robert Johnson’s mentor was “Blind Lemon” Jefferson.  2011 marks the centennial anniversary of his birth, so DFH used centennial hops.  Hellhound is a big hoppy beer, clocking in at 100 IBU’s, dry hopped with centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length.

The beer has made an appearance at the Craft Brewers Conference in San Francisco this week.  Hellhound will hit draft handles & 750ml champagne bottles in May, 2011. (Or earlier)

Lost Abbey Vs. Brewdog

If you have seen Tomme Arthur’s Twitter feed recently, he talks about his trip over the pond to Europe & spent a few days with Brewdog in Glasgow, Scotland.  You can’t put two brewers from breweries near half the globe apart and expect them not to collaborate on something.

James Watt unveiled the first collaboration between Lost Abbey & Brewdog today in his Hop Propaganda newsletter – “Lost Dog.”

We brewed an Imperial Porter, aiming for 10% ABV and using a blend of 7 different malts. In terms of hops, we keep the IBUs modest at 35 and hopped the beer entirely with First Gold. And of course this collaboration just had to be aged in oak.

We settled on some killer rum casks for the Imperial Porter. We only brewed a tiny batch of this beer and intend to age it in the rum barrels for about 12 months. So look out for the Lost Abbey & BrewDog rum barrel aged Imperial Porter coming your way in early 2012.

There you have it.

Full Release

For our first collaboration beer we are lucky to partner with Cigar City Brewing out of Tampa, Florida. Geographically a country apart but following similar paths, we felt an immediate connection with Joey, Wayne and the crew. We’re both young breweries, founded and staffed by homebrewers, who use interesting ingredients and techniques to make unique, full-flavored beers. A recipe was created over pints at Falling Rock Tap House during GABF 2009 and Wayne came out to help brew it shortly after. Over a year in barrels has left this dark sour layered with notes of cranberries, tropical fruits, leather and aged balsamic vinegar, balanced by wood tannins and roasted malt. Raise a glass and toast to the success of fledlging breweries across this great nation!

The Release of Marion Acidifie will be as follows:

March 25th, 7pm
Rosamunde Sausage Grill, 2832 Mission Street, San Francisco
Grand Release with the folks from The Bruery and Cigar City Brewing in attendance.

March 28th, 12pm

April 8th

Sam Adams/Weihenstephan Infinium

This beer has gotten a lot of beer geek buzz over the past few months.  The chance to finally try this beer for yourself has arrived.  Infinium is a very unique collaborative effort, and definitely one of the most elegant packages for a brew I’ve seen in a while.  Read up on the story before you pop the cork.  Pinky fingers up everyone.

Backstory:
Our brewers worked for two years with the world’s oldest brewery, Germany’s Weihenstephan, to create this unique new beer style. A groundbreaking brew, made with only the four traditional ingredients: malted barley, hops, water and yeast, Infiniumâ„¢ is a crisp champagne-like beer with fine bubbles and a fruity, spicy aroma. The crisp clean malt character and delicate fruit notes in this beer are complemented by a slight citrus flavor from dry hopping with Bavarian Noble hops. Bottle conditioning adds another layer of complexity and light spice notes.

The challenge was to create a new one-of-a-kind, champagne-style beer, while operating within the confines of Reinheitsgebot; the German Beer Purity Law dating back to 1560 which allows the use of only water, malt, hops & yeast. Using these four classic ingredients and the traditional brewing process to reach their end goal would require the brewers ofSamuel Adams and Weihenstephan to innovate like never before. Combining their 1,000 years of brewing expertise and creativity, the two brewers created a groundbreaking brew that’s crisp and champagne-like. It’s light and dry yet complex, with a sparkling effervescence.

Our brewers rearranged the brewing process to create this ground-breaking beer, reintroducing the mash process into the brew kettle and the fermenter. The process used to brew Infinium is patent pending, and allowed our brewers to create a beer unlike any ever brewed under the Reinheitsgebot. Infinium is dry-hopped with Bavarian Noble hops for a light citrus flavor. Its then bottle-conditioned with a traditional Belgian yeast and fermented in the champagne-method to add another layer of flavor complexity, a bright clarity, and a fine carbonation to the beer.

Style: Biere de Champagne/ Biere Brut
Hops: Hallertau Mittlefrueh, Spalt Spalter, Tettnang Tettnanger and Hersbrucker Noble Hops
Malts: Custom blend of two-row malted barley, malted spring white wheat, and malted oats
Yeast: Samuel Adams ale yeast, Belgian yeast

Taste Expectations: Effervescent, slightly hoppy with a touch of earth.  Bready, bit of sweet malt. Very dry.

Availability: 750 ML, Corked/Caged. One time collaboration.

Cellar? Suggested to drink by June 2011

10.3% ABV
