Here are some more details on the sure to be tasty collaboration headed for Philly Beer Week in June, 2011. The name is Brotherly Suds 2.. The collab features Tom Kehoe (Yards), John Trogner (Troegs), Brent Kintzer (Stoudt’s), Bill Covaleski (Victory) and Gordon Grubb (Nodding Head). BS2 will be a lager – described by the group as a “brewer’s beer” not a beer geek beer. “A selfish beer.” Finding importance in layering flavors into the beer itself.
Brent Kintzer from Stoudt’s organized the collaborative and provided the equipment. The malt bill was designed by Trogner & Covaleski. The hops – Grubb & Kehoe. The crowning touch of history & brewing comes from the yeast. Fuhrmann & Schmidt Brewing Company was a Philly beer staple from 1906 until they closed their doors in 1975. Brotherly Suds 2 will feature Schmidt’s yeast, bridging Philadelphia brewing past, and present. The beer debuts June 3, 2011. Video via Susquehanna Live.
Savor Flowers, a rare beer collaboration between Dogfish Head & Sam Adams will be making a debut at Savor in June. (Most likely ONLY to Savor.) There is a second edition of the label with some more wording. It features a correspondence between Jim Koch & Sam Calagione.
I’m psyched! I love your idea of a collaboration beer for Savor! Can I throw out an idea to the get the process started? We still have some of the original barrels from 1993/94 used for Samula Adams Triple Bock. I think they were the first oak barrels used for beer with this barrel aging thing was just beginning. I think it would be cool to use those same barrels for our collaboration. We should think of something different to do with them this time around. And maybe some other boundaries of brewing to mess with. Any thoughts? Just brew it!-Jim
Barrel one? High gravity flower tinctures? You’ve got some sweet tools in your brewer’s utility belt Jim. As the Joker said of Batman, “Where does he get those wonderful toys!?” Sounds like a great direction fro this recipe. I found some yummy rose syrup made with lemon juice and rose pedals in Turin, Italy. I will send some up for you guys to play with in the lab. I think we could add some in the whirl and it will marry-up to your muti-flower tincture in a sexy way down steam. I like what you wrote about the power of the flowers Jim. In fact, I suggest we simply call this beer Savor Flowers. By interweaving the beer and event names we can drive home the point that craft beer and beautiful foods belong together. – Sam

Looks like there might beer some bottles of the Sam Adams/Dogfish Head collaboration for Savor – “Savor Flowers.” The beautiful label carries a Brewer’s Association logo on for the backside of the bottle. Pure speculation, the bottles will be distributed to the BA members, VIP attendees to Savor, and brewery employees.
Savor Flowers is brewed with dried red & white rose petals, plus 2 other kinds of roses. The hops are experimental, known only by a name “369.” As if the beer needed to be a bit MORE unique, this floral offering is aged in a special whiskey barrel dear to Jim Koch, one he aged a triple bock in back in the ’90s.
Total production is limited to 30 barrels. Debuts at Savor in Washington D.C. in June.
What You Need To Know:
In 2008, both Cigar City Brewing and The Bruery opened their doors. In 2009, Joe Redner of Cigar City and Patrick Rue of The Bruery met at GABF. They becames friends, had beers at Falling Rock Tap House, slapped a few high fives, and decided to collaborate. Once you get those 2 brewers in a room together, don’t expect anything usual. Ingredients like Thai basil, guava, specialty barrels came into play.
An Imperial Oud Bruin developed from a mutual love of classic Belgian technique blended with modern American ingenuity. Spending over a year in barrels, both bourbon and wine, has left this dark sour ale layered with notes of cranberries, tropical fruits, leather and aged balsamic vinegar, balanced by wood tannins and roasted malt.
Style: Flanders Oud Bruin
Taste Expectations: Dark fruits, cherries. Roasty, & light malts. Oak, tart, sweet, funky, complex.
Availability: 750 ML champagne bottles. Limited release.
It’s good to have friends at the Craft Brewers Conference, even when you can’t be there. Some big talk is circulating around CBC about Russian River Brewing collaborating with Sierra Nevada Brewing again. There has been one other collaboration between the breweries, a sour brown ale released at the CBC in 4 pks.
The new collaboration is planned to be distributed nationally to all areas currently receiving Sierra Nevada. The details on the new collaboration are unclear. The text message I received said “pale ale with brett.”
