Jailhouse & Max Lagers Create “Partners In Crime”

Glenn Golden of Jailhouse Brewing Company (Hampton, GA), John Roberts of Max Lagers’ (Atlanta), and Chris Collier (formerly of Nantahala) just released a new collaboration- Partners In Crime. The group created a Berliner Weiss, a beer traditionally soured by lactobacillus. Lacto is a bacteria you don’t want freely running around your brewery. (It can sour beers that aren’t supposed to be sour.) Their solution is add lactobacillus to the beer “preboil” and allowed it to sour over night. Viola! The rest of the beers are safe.

Partners in Crime exhibits a dominant wheat beer character with a supporting cast of unique and funky flavors. Our sour mash and lactobacillus additions impart an extra depth described as a lemon and peach fruit with a hint of corn and farmland. The star is the sour notethat brightens the beer and adds a crisp tart finish.

Style: Berliner Weisse
Taste (Per JH): A tart wheat flavor with lemon and peach accents. An earthy farm-like aroma and flavor adds complexity to the beer that finishes with a crisp tartness.

Dogfish Head & Sierra Nevada Create Rhizing Bines

Built on the friendship they built with Life & Limb, Dogfish Head & Sierra Nevada are back at it again with Rhizing Bines. The beer is described at an East meets West IPA, incorporating the way each of the breweries hop their beer.

On the hot side, Rhizing Bines will go through Dogfish’s signature continual-hopping process with floral and citrusy Bravo hops. On the cold side, it will be dry-hopped with an experimental varietal so new it doesn’t yet have a name, just a number: Hop 644. A component of Sierra Nevada’s aroma-boosting Torpedo system will make a pit-stop in Delaware for dry-hopping duty before it heads to Sierra’s new North Carolina brewery.

In honor of Sierra Nevada headed to Ashville, Dogfish Head added Carolina heirloom red winter wheat grown at Anson Mills. Rhizing Bines is brewed at Dogfish Head in Milton, DE.

Style: Imperial IPA
Hops: Bravo, #644

Availability: 750 ml bottles. Dogfish Head’s 27 State Network

Hoppin’ Frog Natasha Is European Collab #2

Hoppin' Frog Natasha Rocks America

The second beer in a series of collaboration brews by Hoppin’ Frog (Akron, OH) is Natasha Røcks America. Fred Karm (founder of Hoppin’) recently took a beer run through Europe and did a series of Euro collaborations. His first stop was De Molen, where they made USA Meets Europe S.I.P.A., a saison/IPA fusion. Stop #2 finds a collaboration with Fanø Bryghus (Fanø, Denmark).

NATASHA ROCKS AMERICA In a collaboration with Fano Brewery on Fano Island in Denmark, we created an Imperial Stout recipe to satisfy our own deepest desires. Brewing it on this picturesque summertime vacation island is how Natasha started, and of course we couldn’t wait to brew it at Hoppin’ Frog! The result is Natasha Rocks America – a rich, hoppy Imperial Stout with the deep-roasted, smooth flavor of Chocolate Rye malt. And, Natasha is generously dry-hopped with the perfect mix of select American hops, adding a great hop character to this super-tasty Imperial Stout collaboration brew.

Style: Stout (w/ Rye)
Availability: 22 oz bombers

Terrapin’s Edition of BFM Collaboration Arrives

This one has been a while in the making. Well over a year ago, Terrapin Beer Co and Brasserie Franches Montagnes (Jura, Switzerland) collaborated on a rye based barleywine. The first edition “Spike & Jerome’s Ale” was aged in rum barrels in Switzerland.

Terrapin has been aging their edition Jerome & Spikes 2011 Barley Ryne in bourbon barrels in Athens, Georgia. Well, at least 1/3 of it. The beer is a blend of barrel aged and non barrel aged beer.

New Belgium & Brewery Vivant Collaborate On New Lips Of Faith

New Belgium Lips Of Faith Biere De Garde

A second collaboration is in the works between Brewery Vivant and New BelgiumBiere De Garde. New Belgium  started distributing to the state of Michigan in late August. Brewery Vivant & New Belgium created Eschoffier Bretta Ale to celebrate the occasion. Born our of the same friendship is the cocky offering above.

Famous in Michigan for farmhouse ales, our friends at Brewery Viviant introduced us to their biere de garde ale yeast strain. From there, we imagined a slightly tart, intentionally dry beer with hints of bergamot citrus that pairs perfectly with French cheeses.
