Westbrook & Charleston Beer Exchange: Grumpy Old Time

Westbrook Grumpy Old Time

Westbrook Brewing (Mt Pleasant, SC) and one of the United State’s best beer stores The Charleston Beer exchange teamed up on a series of “Old Time” collaborations. Above, is Grumpy Old Time.  Grumpy joins Funky Old Time, in this series of collaborations between the two.

The base beer “Old Time” is a Belgian style dark ale brewed in July, 2011. It was then added to apple brandy barrels. So for nearly a year and a half,  Grumpy Old Time has been funking out with some wild yeasts.  Look for bottles and draft soon. (Draft may already be around)

Style: American Wild Ale (Brandy Barrel Aged)
Availability: 750 ml Bottles, Draft
Arrival: TBA

No immediate details are available until the final blends are confirmed – but put this one on your radar. Check out the Beer Street Journal Video on the new Yazoo Sour Program in the meantime.

UPDATE 4/3/13, 6:00 pm: Draft only. Tennessee only.

Dogfish Head Collaborates Overseas

For this collaboration, Dogfish Head traveled to England to work with Charles Wells.

Instead of taking ingredients and creating an entirely new product, the two combined parts of one of each of their already existing beers to form a true collaboration. Starting with a reduction of Dogfish Head’s 60 Minute IPA, what Wells likes to call the “true DNA of the beer,” they  added this to one of their beers to create DNA New World IPA. The beer will be available in the UK on cask starting in April 2013 and is being re-brewed in the US to be released during Philly Beer Week in June.

Style: IPA
Arrival: June 2013

4.5% ABV

Victory Brewing Brings Extinct Beer Style Back

In a collaboration with Market Garden Brewery in Cleveland, Victory will be brewing a beer style thought to be extinct in the United States. Kennett Ale was inspired by a ghost advertisement on the side of a wall in Cleveland and will be a re-creation of a style of beer originating in the Kennet/Reading region of England.

The brew uses English and German malts and is spiced with coriander, grains of paradise, and a bit of Piment d’Esplette peppers and brown sugar creating a 19th century style amber strong ale. A batch has been brewed at each brewery and will be available draft only starting April 2nd at Victory and April 4th at Market Garden.

Style: English Strong Ale
Availability: Draft only
Arrival: April, 2013

8.6% ABV

Oskar Blues and Asheville Brewing Name Collab

With Oskar Blues opening a second location in North Carolina the first thing they wanted to do was make friends in their new Southern home.  What better way than to brew with them? Keeping that in mind, Oskar Blues has teamed up with Asheville Brewing Company for their first colla-BEER-ation inspired by the Southern roots around them. Meet Big BAMA Buzz – an Imperial Brown Ale with Ethipian-blend coffee. The name was created by combining two names entered by Matt Hazelton and Janice Freeman on the breweries’ Facebook pages. Since the head brewer at Ashville and the owner for Oskar Blues are both from Alabama and love all things Southern, the name just seemed perfect.

Simultaneous launch parties will take place at both breweries on Monday, April 8th, from 4-8pm with proceeds of beer sales benefitting the Animal Care Network, the largest animal welfare organization in Western North Carolina.

Style: Imperial Brown Ale (with coffee)
Availability: draft only
Arrival: April 8 2013
