Deschutes Zarabanda Bottles This Fall

Deschutes Brewery’s (Bend, OR) Zarabanda will find its way into bottles this fall. Zarabanda is a chef driven saison, meant to be paired with food. The list of ingredients include lemon verbena, pink peppercorn, sumac (a tart spice), and dried lime. Spicy saisons offset food flavors beautifully.

We looked to acclaimed Chef Joe Andres to help us create a Spanish take on the farmhouse style saison. The addition of Lemon Verbena, pink peppercorn, sumac, and dried lime infuse the chef’s distinctive flavors into the brew – an ale purposefully crafted to compliment all your culinary endeavors. Or be savored all by itself.

Chef Jose Andres worked with Deschutes on this creation, debuting it at Aspen Food & Wine in June. Zarabanda will be available in 22oz bottles.

Style: Saison (w/ Pink Peppercorn, Sumac, Lemon Verbena, Dried Lime)
Available: Draft (Previously), 22oz Bottles soon.
Arrival: TBA

Sierra Nevada & Boulevard Terra Incognita Returns

Three years ago, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Boulevard Brewing Company created Terra Incognita, a special offering for SAVOR, a a Brewers Association beer and food event. The beer was so much fun to make, the two breweries released it again in 2013, this time with Brettanomyces yeast.

The 2014 edition does not include wild yeast, but let us assure you after trying it right after bottling, it’s better than you can imagine. This year is a 55% blend of wine barrel ale, 32% bourbon barrel aged ale, and 13% fresh ale. The base beer is a hoppy, imperial brown ale.

“The base beer is a roasty, hopped-up brown ale that evolves in such interesting ways when it spends time in wine and whiskey barrels,” said Sierra Nevada Head Brewer Steve Dresler. “We hosted Boulevard at our Chico brewery and together tasted various blending ratios until we had a final beer that captivated us. We imagine craft beer drinkers will be similarly impressed.”

Sierra Nevada/Boulevard Brewing Terra Incognita will be available in 750 ml bottles for a limited time.

Style: American Strong Ale (Barrel Aged. Bourbon. Wine Barrel Aged)
Availability: 750ml Bottles. Limited Release.

Widmer Brothers & 10 Barrel Brewing Create “Fizz”

Widmer Brothers Brewing (Portland, OR) celebrates 30 years of craft brewing with a series of collaborations. The third collab is with 10 Barrel Brewing out of Bend, Oregon.

Meet Widmer Fizz, an interesting hybrid beer. Fizz is brewed with Meyer lemons, fresh ginger, and finished with champagne yeast. The result is an effervescent, bubby, summer offering.

“We got together with the 10 Barrel team, and they helped push this beer way out of the box,” said Ben Dobler, innovation brewer at Widmer Brothers Brewing. “We’re calling Fizz a ‘spritzer-style ale’ because the beer was inspired by spritzer champagne cocktails, and we feel like it’s a great description of what the beer actually delivers. The champagne yeast, Meyer lemon, and fresh ginger give it a really refreshing summertime taste.”

Widmer Brothers Fizz will be available in limited quantities in 22oz bottles, and draft.

Style: Herbed/Spice Beer (w/ Ginger, Lemons)
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft.
Distribution: Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Minneapolis, NYC, Boston, Philadelphia

Red Hare Collaborates with Oakshire Brewing

Red Hare Brewing (Marietta, GA) took a trip to Oakshire Brewing (Eugene, OR) over the winter. The two breweries struck a friendship that leads us to this summer offering, based on Oakshire’s Ill Tempered Gnome Winter Ale.

On a recent trip to Oregon, while seeking shelter from a freak blizzard, head brewer from Oakshire Brewery  invited the Red Hare crew to warm up with their sour barrels and hearty winter ales. As a nod to their Ill Tempered Gnome Winter Ale, we decided to collaborate on a summer version, an India Pale Lager. With this collaborative effort, we were able to get enough Citra hops to amok this beer a go. This India Pale Lager has the biscuity, malt flavor profile of a Lager, with the intense bitter, tropical  citrus tones of an IPA.

Style: India Pale Lager
Hops: Citra, Zythos
Malts: Two Row, Bonlander, Munich, 40L Caramel Malts

Availability: Draft only
