New Belgium’s $8 Mil Canning Line Up & Running

New Belgium Brewing announced today that their new 16,000 square foot canning line is up and running.  The new line comes at a cost of $8 million.

At 360 cans per minute, the new line can handle 12 oz cans, and 16 oz “tallboys.”  That’s an increase of 6x the original rate (at 6o cans a minute.)  Fat Tire & Ranger are now available in tallboys, with  Shift Pale Lager coming shortly after.  The brewery will spend $1 million on that launch in April.

“People are loving craft beer in a can so we decided to increase production to keep up with demand,” said Bryan Simpson, New Belgium spokesperson. “We first rolled out cans in 2008 as an outdoor-friendly, light for transport and readily recyclable vessel. Our fans enjoy that cans can travel to places where glass is not an option and now tallboys can come along, too.”

In a brewery visit back in September, it was mentioned that New Belgium markets that don’t currently get NB cans can expect them after the installation of this line.  [PressRelease]

Finch’s Threadless IPA

Finch’s Beer Co Threadless IPA.

Our Threadless/Finch collaboration IPA is a balanced experience of both perceived hoppiness and true bitterness. It pours a darker amber color and finishes with a citrus flavor, and when combined, will require this to be the last IPA you ever drink! Well, maybe, we realize you will probably drink more, but the result of this recipe clearly evolves into a very balanced IPA. The grain bill on this big pale includes melanoidin and Victory malts. We hop it up before the boil starts with some Columbus first wort hopping, then add a bunch more for bittering.

Style: IPA
Availability: 16 oz cans
Arrival: April 2012

Oskar Blues To Can Whiskey Too

Oskar Blues Brewing LogoOskar Blues Brewing  (Lyons, CO) is making plans to start canning something new and it’s not beer.   It’s Whiskey.    Soon Colorado will know Lyon Soul Distilling.

The barn (where the Oskar Blue’s can beer revolution got started, and The Foo Fighters have played) will house a new distillery.  The still is already ordered and will be ready by Summer, 2012.  Dale Katechis (you know him without knowing him: Dale’s Pale Ale)   His grandfather owned a still when he was growing up in Alabama so distilling seems to have always been in his blood.   The first two products to be sold will be an Organic Agave Nectar using local Madhava honey, and a whiskey made from brewery mash, aged in french oak barrels.

Ironically, this isn’t the first crossover by Oskar Blues into the distilling world.  They brewery used to provide the mash to Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey in the past few years.  (Plus they have used Stranahan’s barrels for beer aging.)   For those who partake on non-alcoholic beverages,  OB is planning on canning their root beer too.

In other news from Oskar Blues: The brewery is collaborating with Sun King to make “Chaka“, and is shipping Deviant Dales in tallboy cans.
