Olde Hickory Brewery’sDaniel Boone. What better way to honor an American legend than with a barrel aged beer.
Boone, traveling through Kentucky on his way to the frontier, needed a place to store his beer. He placed an imperial brown in discarded bourbon barrels. Months later he had an amazing beer that would cellar well. An so a legend was born.
Next up for Clown Shoes will be a collaboration with Brash Brewing Company. The first beer will be brewed in April. This double double brown ale will be Pimp. No really, it will be named Pimp. This brew will be a double batch of a rich Belgian brown blended with a 10% ABV version of Brown Angel.
Also, be on the look out for Miracle. This 5.5% ABV IPA is named after Mike Pettengill, a Clown Shoes delivery driver. Look for these bomber bottles later this month. Gregg from the brewery says…
When I asked Mike how he was going to explain to people why is on the label he said, “What do you mean? I’ll tell them because I‘m f*cking awesome.”

Cigar City Brewing is sweating it out in Florida right now assembling a canning line they purchased from New Belgium. The can artwork is starting to appear. Cubano-Style Espresso is a brown ale brewed with vanilla, cacao, and coffee beans.
This rich brown ale is redolent with Cuban-style roasted espresso beans, sweet caramel and toffee and hints of dry nuttiness. Cuban Espresso is a popular drink in the Cigar City of Tampa owing to its many Sicilian and Cuban immigrants. The beans for Cubano-Style Espresso Brown Ale are roasted locally by Mazzaro’s Italian Market and Deli in St. Petersburg to our exact specifications.
Terrapin has begun shipping two seasonal beers this week – Hop Karma and Hopzilla.
This is Hopzilla’s second appearance, this time as a part of Terrapin’s Monster Beer Tour, in 12oz/4 packs. It’s full of citra and centennial hops for a citrusy/pineapple hop punch. Hopzilla! Doesn’t lay off when it comes to malt. 100% marris otter malt gives this hoppy reptile a honey like mouth feel. Hopzilla has body for sure!
Hop Karma was shifted to seasonal status starting this year. Steve Hayes describes this beer like this:
Hop Karma Brown IPA (or dark, hoppy goodness as I like to call it). You probably remember this beer, as it was once part of our year-round offerings, but it has now been moved into the Seasonal Sessions line because we simply couldn’t keep up with production all year long. The dark roasted, coffee-like flavors of the Chocolate, Crystal, and Dark Munich malts give way to piney and cirtus flavors from Spike’s combination of flavorful, American hops…yum
The last of the Moo-Hoo is on shelves now. This is your last shot at it before next fall. Get to drinking…
Stone/ Fat Head’s/ Bear Republic “TBA” Now Available
Yesterday, Stone Brewing released a new collaboration, dubbed “Bear Republic â„ Fat Head’s â„ Stone TBA.
Per Stone:
This particular beer pays homage to a relatively little—known beer style called Texas Brown Ale, which, strangely enough, has its roots in California. It originated as a hopped up version of a brown ale recipe, and it got pretty popular with a group of NorCal homebrewers in the early 1980s.
“These California guys were tweaking an English-style brown,” explains Matt Cole, Head Brewer of Fat Head’s Brewery. “They added some Crystal and Chocolate malts, and supercharged it with a bunch of Cascade hops to get a bigger version with more hop forward aromas and flavors.”
While delicious, these beers failed to fare well in homebrew competitions, since there was no recognized category they could be entered in. They were far too hoppy and bitter to be considered a traditional brown ale. But when a competition in Houston, TX, accepted entries for what they named the “California Dark” category, the American Homebrewers Association followed suit soon after, though they perplexingly changed the name to Texas Brown Ale.
“Bear Republic â„ Fat Head’s â„ Stone TBA” revisits this uncommon style, incorporating a few new twists. “Everyone got to add elements that they feel are special to them for that style of beer,” notes Richard Norgrove, Jr., Brewmaster at Bear Republic Brewing Co., who added brown sugar and molasses to the recipe for added complexity. “That’s what’s cool about collaborations. You get to work with two other brewers you respect, and you all have different thoughts and ideas on how to make a great beer together.”
“Collaborations give us a chance to get really creative,” adds Mitch Steele, Brewmaster at Stone Brewing Co. “We get to make a beer that we otherwise wouldn’t normally brew.”
