Boulevard Rye on Rye “Sazerac” debuts for beer/cocktail lovers

Boulevard Brewing’s Smokestack Series, a collection of big, unique, beers, has grown considerably over the past year or two. The venerable Smokestack Imperial Stout has recently been joined by Raspberry and Coconut variants. Now, Rye-on-Rye, the barrel aged rye beer, has its own variant – Rye-on-Rye Sazerac.

Variations of the classic sazerac cocktail includes cognac, whiskey or absinthe. The brewing team at Boulevard nuanced this edition with lemon peel, cinnamon, cardamom, and star anise in order to mimic the liquor and flavors of the bitters in the cocktail.

The “X” factor stands for key ingredients added to the special release, giving it a unique character. Unknown Brewing 2.5 features bourbon & fruit

Unknown Brewing 2.5 (ish) is the second release in the Charlotte, North Carolina based brewery’s on going Anniversary Series.

Last year, brewery founder Brad Schell realized at one point that he had completely forgotten the brewery’s first birthday. (Owning a burgeoning brewery will do that.) If you know anything about Schell and well, the whole brewery’s less than normal mentality, then you’ll fully understand his next move. Throw a 1.5 ish birthday party. And… do it again next year.

Unknown Brewing 2.5 is hitting shelves in North Carolina. South Carolina, and Georgia. The beer is a blend of both a Belgian-style red ale, and a Belgian-style golden ale, aged in bourbon barrels with apricots, blackberries, and cherries. Truly a party in a bottle. Last years is pictured on the left in the image above.

Unknown Brewing 2.5 is a limited 22 ounce bottle offering.

Style: Belgian-Style Strong Ale (w/ Blackberries, Apricots, Cherries. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)

Foothills Dead and Berried (blackberry bourbon stout) coming late summer

Foothills Dead and Berried, an all new imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with raspberries, is slated for August.

This year, the Foothills Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate release was pushed up to spring. You have the barrels to thank for that. Because of this move, the brewery had a slot in the release schedule (August-September) that needed to be filled. 300 freshly emptied Buffalo Trace barrels recently came to the Foothill’s Winston-Salem, North Carolina home, for BA Sexual Chocolate and Barrel Aged People’s Porter. However, some barrels were left over.

That’s where Foothills Dead and Berried got started. The brewery created an all new imperial stout (different from the Sex chocolate base) last fall. That beer aged for a while on 420 pounds Oregonian blackberries. Then – bourbon barrels for over 5 months.

Up side? Another potentially fantastic barrel-aged beer from Foothills.

Downside? Foothills Dead and Berried will be draft only this time around. On draft at the brewery and brewpub, and the Denver Rare Beer Tasting this fall.

Style: Imperial Stout (w/ Blackberries. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Availability: Draft Only
Debut: August, 2016

Triple C Kind of a Wild Deal, the breweries first wild

Triple C Kind of a Wild Deal is the Charlotte, North Carolina based brewery’s first bottled wild ale.

The base beer for Triple C Kind of a Wild Deal is an imperial honey wheat ale, that was aged in bourbon barrels. Later in the process, the barrels were pitched with Brettanomyces Bruxelles yeast, plus a healthy dose of blueberries.

But wait – there’s more. There are actually three other bourbon barrel variations of the beer coming, including Ginger Boysenberry, Blood Orange and Strawberry.  All three will see limited distribution.

Not done yet. Triple C is doing yet another variation in rum barrels with mango.

This bad boy rolls in late to the party at an impressive 9.2% ABV, obnoxiously triple parks his Miata, and immediately begins downing drinks. After grabbing your girlfriend’s butt and double dipping the guac, you decide it’s time for him to go. Upon approach, you unfortunately notice his silk robe is a few inches too loose, you lose it and scream “You’ve got to go”. He shakes away from your grasp and exclaims “I don’t know how to put this, but… I’m kind of a big deal!”

Triple C Kind of a Wild Deal will be a 22 ounce bottle offering in late July, 2016.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Blueberries. Barrel Aged. Bourbon.)
Availability: 22oz Bottles, Draft. Limited Release.
Debut: Late July, 2016

9.2% ABV
