Wicked Weed Hop Burglar, with blood orange & grapefruit

Wicked Weed Hop Burglar

Wicked Weed Hop Burglar is back for a second year, proving the fruited IPA style is very much on fire across the industry.

This hop-forward release features blood orange, and grapefruit zest, creating a very bright, citrusy beer.

All brewers have begged, borrowed, and burgled in the name of their craft. It takes humility, stubbornness, and some sleight of hand to turn raw ingredients into liquid alchemy. Hop Burglar India Pale Ale, brewed with blood orange grapefruit zest, and liberally dry-hopped, is just such a beer, the kind of bright, citrus-forward IPA that we would do anything to keep brewing. So mind your pockets – and your hops.

Wicked Weed Hop Burglar is a 12 ounce bottle offering, and draft.

Style: IPA (w/ Blood Orange, Grapefruit.)
Availability: 12oz Bottles
Debut: Late-April, 2016
Latest Return: March, 2017

More Fruit: 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die Blood Orange IPA ships

21st Amendment Brew Free or Die Blood Orange IPA

21st Amendment Brew Free or Die Blood Orange IPA. The name pretty much speaks for itself.

Fruited India pale ales are very much on fire. Consumers have voted with their dollar- they love citrusy IPAs. That’s why Brew Free or Die Blood Orange IPA, a variant of their year-round beer, is now available in cans. The San Francisco, California based brewery has been developing this recipe for more than a year.

“Blood oranges were a totally new ingredient for us, and it was a lot of fun to play around with different approaches of where to add it into the process, and how much.” The result? A tangy, thirst-quenching, IPA with distinct flavors. “We want craft beer drinkers to understand that while this is a new and totally different beer, it has a great lineage, but when you crack open that can and get that first whiff of blood orange and hops… Oh man, it’s a thing of beauty.” – Shaun O’Sullivan, Brewmaster & Co-Founder

The base recipe is built off of the brewery’s’ year-round Brew Free or Die IPA with Citra, Mosaic, and Chinook hops, at 2.5 pounds more per barrel. Plus blood orange of course.

21st Amendment Brew Free or Die Blood Orange IPA will be a 12 ounce can and draft release, starting in March, 2017.

Funky Buddha Moro Moro Blood Orange IPA, Feb 19th

Funky Buddha Moro Moro Blood Orange IPA

Funky Buddha Moro Moro Blood Orange IPA pours once again on February 19th.

This beer is all about the Citrus × sinensis fruit, aka blood orange. Specifically the ‘Moro’ cultivar. The blood red juice gives this India pale ale a different juice complexity, when compared to oranges.

More Moro Blood Orange IPA is back! We ceremoniously slaughtered heaps of crimson-fleshed “Moro” fruit to retrieve its delicious ichor, and then blended it with caramel malts and grapefruity hops to produce the sticky, citrus blast that we crave. Oranges: you’re on notice.

Funky Buddha Moro Moro Blood Orange IPA is seasonally available in 12 ounce bottles and draft.

Style: IPA (w/ Blood Orange)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. Feb-May
Latest Return: 2/19/17

Zombies not included. Terrapin The Walking Dead Beer, now in cans

Terrapin The Walking Dead

Terrapin The Walking Dead Blood Orange IPA is headed back to shelves once again in February, 2017. This edition finds the hops a bit brighter, with more pronounced blood orange flavor. Pairs well with apocalyptic zombie carnage.

12 ounce cans and draft are shipping the week of Valentine’s Day, 2017.

Below, Beer Street Journal’s original coverage of the beer’s release in fall, 2015

Terrapin The Walking Dead is coming this fall, to help soothe the nerves as the zombie hoards approach. The tv show, The Walking Dead is filmed in Terrapin’s home of Georgia. In past episodes, local craft breweries have made screen appearances in the show.

To create Terrapin The Walking Dead, the brewery partnered with series creator Robert Kirkman, and Skybound Entertainment to create a beer fans will love.

Terrapin Beer Company and The Walking Dead have teamed up to brew the official beer of the undead. Made with blood orange peel, and a horrific amount of hops, this bloodthirsty red IPA will have you prepared for the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse.

Beer Street Journal isn’t about beer reviews. Hopefully this doesn’t read that way. Last night we tried the Terrapin The Walking Dead, ahead of the release. Those wondering, yes – there is a good bit of blood orange flavor, and a hoppy finish. That’s a given. Also, that’s all the beer is supposed to be.

Honestly, I feel there are going to be interpretations of this beer. Those who will probably hate it because it won’t live up to their impossibly high standards for beer. Ok, IPAs. Half the time it’s the same folks that never have anything good to say about anything beer related. (Most likely everything else as well.)

On the other side of the tracks, are those people excited that The Walking Dead has a beer, that’s not brewed by a mega brewery, and will buy it because for just that reason, and crack it open during the show. Simple as that.. The response to the article announcing this beer has been insane. Simple as that.

At the end of the day, it’s a crazy amazing show, awesome partnership, and tasty liquid. Have fun with it.

Terrapin The Walking Dead Blood Orange IPA will be available in cans for the first time in February, 2017.

Style: IPA (w/ Blood Orange)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft

The newest “a-peeling” can: Dogfish Head Flesh & Blood

Dogfish Head Flesh & Blood IPA canned

Dogfish Head Flesh & Blood IPA has been canned for the first time, following 60 Minute IPA the Delaware brewery’s new can lineup.

Fruit nuanced India pale ales have taken the beer world by storm over the past year, and 2017 will be no different. The beer debuted in 2016 in the brewery’s “Occasionals” lineup, but demand is dictating otherwise. Dogfish Head Flesh & Blood IPA has been promoted to year-round status, exclusively in aluminum.

Flesh & Blood’s base is an imperial IPA, brewed with fresh lemon flesh, and blood orange juice.

“We’ve been experimenting with fruit and citrus IPA’s since 1996 when we released Aprihop, an IPA brewed with apricots. The India Pale Ale is the biggest craft beer style in America and the most popular breakout subset style in the fruit IPA. We think the fruit IPA category will surge the fastest in 2017 and we are proud of Dogfish Head’s innovator position in this realm.” – Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head founder and CEO

Dogfish Head Flesh & Blood IPA as well as 60 Minute IPA are now shipping to all distribution markets as of January, 2017.

Style: Imperial IPA (w/ Lemons, Blood Orange)
Availability: 12oz Cans. Year-Round
Debut (Cans): January, 2017

Big on fruit. Heavy Seas TropiCannon now year-round

Heavy Seas Tropicannon

Heavy Seas TropiCannon has returned to the brewery’s lineup once again. This time, year-round.

Loosely based on the brewery’s Loose Cannon IPA, Heavy Seas TropiCannon is hoppy, with a blast of tropical and citrus fruits. The brewing team introduces dried grapefruit, oranges and lemons during the brewing process, and mango, blood oranges and grapefruit post-fermentation. While Loose Cannon is heavy on the piney hop flavor, Heavy Seas boosts the citrus flavor by swapping Centennial and Palisade hops for Amarillo.

“TropiCannon was a pleasant surprise for us in 2016. It was originally planned as a limited release product, but so many people kept asking for it that we decided we needed to make it available on a year-round basis. At least for now. This is part of what makes the beer industry so fun!” – Hugh Sisson, brewery founder.

Heavy Seas TropiCannon is available in 12 ounce bottles and draft. A release party is planned at the brewery in Baltimore, Maryland on December 16th.

Style: IPA (w/ Mango, Lemons, Blood Orange, Grapefruit.)
Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. Year-round

Madtree Blood Orange Psychopathy debuts today

MadTree Blood Orange PsyHOPathy cans

MadTree Blood Orange PsycHOPathy will be available in cans this month, thanks to a strong demand by the brewery’s fanbase.

The beer debuted in fall of 2015 as a taproom experiment. A experiment MadTree Brewing says, customers couldn’t get enough of. The brewery took their popular PsychHOPathy IPA and added fresh blood orange juice, giving the beer a citrus kick.

“The tart and sweet character of the real Blood Orange juice complements the citrus, floral, and grassy hop flavors in PsycHOPathy. Plus, these are the some of the sexiest cans out there.” – Brady Duncan, MadTree Co-founder

Those sexy cans Brady mentions are thanks to Cincinnati artist Margaret Weiner. She is one of many local artists that designs all of MadTree’s can and bottle art.

What to expect. Hops and blood oranges. Not to over-talk this one, but the two big elements at play here – the flavor signature of the base IPA  PsycHOPathy, and the citrusy twinge of blood orange juice. We can see why fans demanded it.

MadTree Blood Orange PsycHOPathy will be available in 12 ounce cans starting the week of September 12th, for a limited time.

Style: IPA (w/ Blood Orange)
Availability: 12oz Cans, Draft
Debut: 9/12/16
