2009 Double Bastard Aged in Bourbon Barrels

Stone Brewing Co.’s American Strong Ale known as the evil big brother of  Arrogant Bastard Ale,  aged in Bourbon Barrels.

From the label of Double Bastard:

Warning: Double Bastard Ale is not to be wasted on the tentative or weak.  Only the Worthy are invited, and then only at your own risk.  If you have even a modicum of hesitation, DO NOT buy this bottle.  Instead, leave it for a Worthy soul who has already matriculated to the sublime ecstasy of what those in the know refer to as “Liquid Arrogance”.

This is one lacerative muther of a beer.  It is unequivocally certain that your feeble palate is grossly inadequate and thus underserving of this liquid glory…and those around you would have little desire to listen to your resultant whimpering.  Instead, you slackjawed gaping gobemouche, slink away to that pedestrian product which lures agog the great unwashed with the shiny happy  imagery of its silly broadcast propaganda. You know, the one that offers no challenge, yet works very, very hard to imbue the foolhardy with the absurd notion that they are exercising ‘independent’ thought or attempts to convey the perception it is in some way ‘authentic’ or ‘original’.  It’s that one that makes you feel safe and delectates you into the warm, fuzzy, and befudding glow of your own nescience.  Why so many allow themselves to be lead by the nose lacks plausible explanation.  Perhaps you have been so lulled by the siren song of ignorance, that you don’t even notice your white knuckle grip on it.  You feel bold and unique, but alas are nothing but sheep, willingly being herded  to and fro.  If you think you are being piqued in this text, it is nothing when compared to the insults we are all asked to swallow spilling forth from our televisions.  Truth be told, you are being coddled into believing you are special or unique by ethically challenged ‘pay no attention to the man behind the curtain’ marketing exec-types.  Double Bastard Ale calls out the garrulous caitiffs who perpetuate the aforementioned atrocities — and those that buy into them — and demands retribution for their outrageously conniving, intentionally misleading, blatantly masturbatory, and fallacious ad campaigns.  We demand the unmitigated, transparent truth.  We demand forthright honesty.  We want justice!  Call ’em out and line ’em up against the wall… NOW!

2010 Stone Imperial Russian Stout Aged In Bourbon

2010 Stone Imperial Russian Stout aged in bourbon barrels.  The name speaks for itself.  Aged 2 years.

On the label for the Stone Imperial Russian Stout, we’ve waxed poetically for the last dozen years about the sinfully decadent richness of the beer. Alas, we seem to have pointed ourselves in the corner with fanciful descriptions, as we now find that there are simply not enough superlatives to begin to approach this special two-year-old bourbon barrel aged version. Mere waxing poetic is far too limiting. What we really need is art and music.  A proper description might possibly be accomplished with a mix of haiku, bombastic symphony and manga. Or perhaps it’s a combination grindcore, found-object sculpture and interpretive dance. Best you come to your own conclusion. We’d probably ask you to post your Stone Imperial Russian Stout aged in bourbon barrels interpretive dance on YouTube, but I think we know better. Do send us your haiku however.

Hell’s Bells: Lost Abbey Track #3

The Lost Abbey releases Track #3 of their ongoing Ultimate Box Set this Saturday. The beer, shown briefly in this video, is a blend of two barrels of Mellow Yellow, and Phunky Duck (a base beer in the blend that becomes Duck Duck Gooze.

Liner Notes

The beer is a blend of some our favorite components. The clean lactic notes from Mellow Yellow combined with the heavier earthy twang we get from the Phunky Duck barrels. It’s a non fruited blond sour which if you take into account our successes with Isabelle, Cable Car and Duck Duck ought to be enough to have people lining up like it’s Black Friday in March.

The Album Art and Text

The majestic bell tower is all that remains of this Gothic cathedral. Somehow, it escaped the ravages of wars and continues to weather the centuries of neglect. Shrouded in a fog of mystical wonder, the Devil maintains it for his personal playground. At dusk, Lucifer emerges to dance between the shadows of a silvering moon as he returns to the bell tower launching a cadence for the newly departed. Gong… Gong… Gong echoes the bell in a Satanic trance as a chorus of bats take flight from the tower-like thunder consuming the silence. For centuries the nearby townspeople have tried to unravel the mysteries of the bell tower only being left to conclude it is haunted. For the wind, they cannot make a Bell Toll like that. But the Devil can and nightly he conducts a Requiem for the souls he has acquired. Shhh… Listen quietly! You can almost hear it now…

Odell’s Shenanigans Arrives 3/24

Odell Shenanigans BottlesOn March 24, Odell Brewing will release Shenanigans Oak Aged Crimson Ale.   Shenanigans is a red ale aged in oak barrels for a touch of Brettanomyces character.

There once was a mischievous brew, with a beautiful crimson like hue. We had one and had one again, and we called it Shenanigans. Then we brewed a batch up just for you.

Flavor (Per Odell)
Brett character offers a hint of tartness to complement the rich malts. Toasted oak and vanilla fill the nose, and a touch of dried cherry plays with the light citrus hop flavor.

How did Odell do it?
“When we develop a new beer, we experiment with a variety of recipes and test batches on our five barrel Pilot Brewing system,” said pilot & barrel aged beer manager, Brent Cordle. “Sometimes, these recipes take on a life of their own becoming a new project. Shenanigans was one such brew, and we all agreed it needed to be shared.

Victory Plans 2nd Barrel Aged Beer “Otto In Oak”

Victory Otto In OakWhen Victory Brewing said they were done with Dark Intrigue, it was rumored they would be barrel aging other offerings.  Here’s a pretty obvious clue – Otto.  The brewery released Otto last year – a smoked Belgian style dubbel.  As it looks now, the brewery has intentions of barrel aging (or is already barrel aging) Otto for release in the future.

The spirit of St. Otto of Bamberg inspired us to create a smoky, Belgian-style dubbel ale featuring the beechwood kilned malts of his home.  As we feasted on the deep, exotic flavors within our creation, the German bischop’s siren song once again tempted us.  The whispers of St. Otto’s ghost, combined with our enjoyment of that ale, lured us to go a step further and age our Otto Ale in once- used bourbon barrels.  What has emerged certainly tastes heaven-sent to us!

Style: Dubbel (Barrel Aged)
Availability: 750 ml bottles
Arrival: TBA

8.1% ABV (or higher)

note: The above is tentative.  Subject to change at whim of the brewer, the beer, or the barrel.
