The Next Avery Barrel Aged: Odio Equum

Avery Odio Equum

Avery Brewing’s Barrel Aged Series will soon find a new member – Odio Equum. Number 13 in the series, Odio Equum sour ale is brewed with raspberries and aged in wine barrels. Odio Equum translates to “Despite the horse”, perhaps a backhanded reference to “horse blanket” flavors that brettanomyces yeast can give to beer.

Such a strong and ugly word, but unfortunately true. Our vintner friend just doesn’t appreciate the depth and character of the aromas and flavors that Brettanomyces creates like we do. Like you do. But hte dude has some seriously fine Cabernet Sauvignon barrels that he shared with us to help create this wonderous sour ale. Our lucky #13 in this series. Aged for 12 months in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Raspberries, Wine Barrel Aged)
Availability: 12 oz bottles. 465 cases produced
Arrival: To be bottled in September, 2012

7.89% ABV

Jester King & Mikkeller’s Barrel Aged Weasel Rodeo Also Available

Jester King/Mikkeller Barrel Aged Weasel Geek RodeoA smidge earlier than Jester King expected,

is their Barrel Aged Weasel Rodeo. The barrel aged edition of the Mikkeller collaboration spent 6 months getting funky in whiskey barrels.

Whiskey Barrel Rodeo (12.0% ABV) is the barrel aged version of Jester King / Mikkeller Weasel Rodeo, an unfiltered, unpasteurized, naturally carbonated Imperial Oatmeal Stout brewed with chipotle peppers, smoked malt and Vietnamese Kopi Luwak Coffee and fermented with farmhouse yeast. After being brewed with Mikkeller at Jester King in November of 2011, Whiskey Barrel Rodeo spent six months aging in whiskey barrels followed by another three months of bottle conditioning. Unlike most of our barrel aged beers where we use barrel aging to impart funky, sour flavors and aromas, Whiskey Barrel Rodeo was aged in whiskey barrels to impart flavors of oak, vanillin and residual whiskey.

This beer is limited to  100 cases (1200 750ml bottles)

Lost Abbey Meets Iron Maiden In August Box Set Release

Lost Abbey Track 8

It’s August. That means the 8th release in The Lost Abbey’s Ultimate Box Set Series will be released. Each beer is a blend, or a one time creation, with a metal overtone. Track #8 is a bourbon barrel version of Judgement Day. (The base beer for Lost Abbey’s Cuvee de Tomme.) The rocking didn’t stop there.

The conversations turned to Oatmeal Raisin cookies and the essence of a freshly baked treat. So we added some cinnamon sticks to the barrels and threw in some dried chiles as well.

The result is sure to be big.Judgement Day is a quadrupel brewed with raisins. Bourbon, cinnamon, and chilies? Sold. You’ll only get this one at Lost Abbey (to drink on site) on August 18, 2012.  What’s in the name? Track #8 is named for Iron Maiden’s “Number of the Beast.”

Style: Quadrupel (w/ Raisins, Cinnamon, Chilies, Barrel Aged)
Availability: 12.7 oz bottles. One time release

13.7% ABV

Anderson Valley & Wild Turkey Team Up For Barrel Aged Series (PICS)

Anderson Valley Brewing (Boonville, CA) has entered into an exclusive partnership with Wild Turkey Bourbon. Together they will create a new series of bourbon barrel aged beers. After a few months of experimenting with the Wild Turkey barrels, Anderson Valley is ready go full steam into barrel aging.

“The opportunity to partner with the Bourbon Hall of Fame Russell family and Wild Turkey is tremendously exciting,” said Trey White, Anderson Valley owner and CEO.  “We have done some trial brews with a limited number of Wild Turkey barrelsover the past several months and the beers to date have been awesome.

The partnership is very beneficial, as Anderson Valley now has access to hundreds of barrels instead of a handful. That means more badass barrel aged beer for everyone. For the first round of bourbon aged offerings, Anderson Valley has aged Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout. Draft only offerings available first. Look for bottles in 2013.

Even Jimmy Russell of Wild Turkey is excited at prospect of drinking beer.

“I’ve been familiar with Anderson Valley Brewing for some time, and I’ve always admired the pride and care they take in crafting and brewing their beer,” said Jimmy Russell, Wild Turkey Master Distiller.  “It’s similar to the approach we take with our bourbon, which made this partnership such a natural fit. Now I finally have a good excuse to drink a great craft beer!”

Start looking for the first barrel aged beers in fall, 2012. Below are some pics from the folks of Anderson Valley and Wild Turkey doing their thing. [PressRelease]
