In Alesmith’s newsletter, this year’s release of Decadence is quite unique. It’s a 2 year old barrel aged edition.
This has proved to be a very interesting edition of BA Decadence. The 2008 batch, an English-style barleywine aged in bourbon barrels, took on a pleasant sourness. Such quirks of nature can provide intriguing drinking experiences, like the many excellent wild ales being produced today. We think you’ll enjoy this delightfully unconventional offering.
Style: English Barleywine (barrel aged)

Also, the barrel aged edition of Speedway Stout is ready to go. Barrel Aged Speedway ranks among the top 100 beers in the world on Beer Advocate. It’s a big imperial stout with tons of coffee added. Don’t forget the chocolate flavors too. 12% ABV.
This edition of BA Speedway, barreled in ’09, is as good as ever. Excellent sweet boozey notes with accents of oak, vanilla, and pleasant oxidative aspects alongside the customary coffee and bitter chocolate roasted malt characteristics.
Goose Island Brewing was purportedly making King Henry Barleywine back in 2008. Rumor has it, Dominique rose in it’s place. There has been a couple of small sightings at festivals, but it now looks like the King Henry will take his throne in 2011.
A description from BA clues us in a little bit more: Loosely based off our 2000th brew at our production facility, we revived this hybrid American / English Barley Wine for a special treat. Coming out of the tanks we aged it in barrels previously used for Bourbon County Stout to add another layer of complexity.
Per Goose Island’s release schedule, King Henry is set to take his throne in December, 2011.
The Brewdog/3 Floyds Brewing collaboration- “Bitch Please” is available in the Brewdog store. About Bitch:
I am a collaborative brew. I am a messed up, idiosyncratic, schizophrenic son of a bitch. I would blame my parents. With the wolves of Three Floyds and pirates from BrewDoginvolved, the writing really was on the wall for me. Right from the start.
Nick, Barnaby and Chris from the legendary Three Floydsvisited BrewDog in August 2010 to brew this crazy beer. Aninherently Scottish spin on a barley wine brewed with peated malts from Islay, shortbread, toffee and eclectic hops. After fermentation the beer was aged in old Jura single malt whisky barrels for 8 months.
All because of the Scamp Wolf of Badenoch. Bitch it up baby!

About Widmer Brothers Brewing
What started as a dream for two ordinary brothers who just loved beer has now become a reality for two ordinary brothers who still just love beer. Kurt and Rob Widmer helped lead the Pacific Northwest craft beer movement in 1984 when, in their twenties, they dreamed of brewing American interpretations of authentic European-style beers. In 1986, Widmer Brothers Brewing introduced the first American-style Hefeweizen; today, the unfiltered cloudy beer is the company’s signature brew and one of the best selling wheat beers in the country. Based in Portland, Ore., the brewery currently brews a variety of beers including Drifter Pale Ale, Nelson Imperial IPA, Drop Top Amber Ale and Pitch Black IPA. Stone Brewing launched a new program for 2 of their most popular beers – Old Guardian and Russian Imperial Stout. The idea was to “Belgianize” the beers for odd years. (2011, 2013, 2015 etc) A great idea for sure, turned to public outcry when drinkers found out they will not be able to have their barlywine & stout in 2011. Stone caved and said they will be producing both in 2011. The first edition of the “Odd Beers” has arrived.
What you need to know:
It’s Stone’s Old Guardian Barleywine. Ale yeast out. Belgian yeast in.
Description: When our illustrious brewing team spiked a few barrels of the Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine with our Belgian yeast strain last year, we absolutely loved it. So much, in fact, that we knew we needed an excuse to make more. So, in our unending quest to constantly challenge the status quo (even our own), we came up with Odd Beers for Odd Years, a program to release odd beers — e.g. Stone Old Guardian BELGO Barley Wine — in odd years (2011, 2013, 2015…). It was met with a bit of resistance (to say the least) since we weren’t originally offering the traditional Old Guardian alongside it, but we’ve mended our ways and decided to make both. You’re welcome.
Style: Barleywine (Belgianized) Hops & Malts: Unspecified, other than lots.
Taste Expectations: Caramel and toffee. Dark fruits from the bananas interlace throughout. Bit of booze, hop bitterness. Good balance.
Availability: 22oz bombers. Draft. Seasonal, odd years. Next brew, 2013.
Half Acre Brewing (Chicago, IL) is brewing up a tribute beer due out by the end of March. As Half Acre mentions, it is the breweries first tribute brew. Marty Stouffer will will be immortalized in the form a barleywine dubbed “Marty Stouffer’s Wild America.”
Marty Stouffer had a tv show in the 80’s & 90’s on PBS. If you haven’t seen the show, he travelled around North America showing kids wildlife. The guys over at Half Acre Brewing grew up watching the show and thought a big beer was fitting. Marty Stouffer is completely on board with the beer release, even taking the time to send over some box sets to the Chicago brewery.
Arrival: Late March, 2011. Chicago & surrounding area.
Great Quote by HA – We brew this tribute beer because 1. A bunch of us at Half Acre watched these shows as kids and really enjoyed seeing these things. And 2. Because there’s a lot of paths you can take when deciding what to do with your time, and deciding you’re going to chronicle yourself raising a bear cub is pretty awesome.
