SweetWater Unveils Expansion With Gov Deal, Mayor Reed

Today SweetWater Brewing unveiled part 1 of a 3 part expansion with Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal  and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.   The overall expansion will bring the brewery’s capacity to nearly 500,000 barrels.

Its brewing capacity to nearly 500,000 barrels per year. Throughout its year-round construction, the expansion project created more than 400 jobs and infused an estimated $19 million into the regional economy during a time of economic downturn.  Phase two and three will be completed by early this fall and will include installation of 14 new 1,000-barrel fermentation tanks and a new 250-barrel brew house.

The Ottley Drive location started at 26,000 feet and by the time all three phases are completed – will exceed 100,000 square feet.  The new building is home to an expanded bottling and packaging hall, keg line, quality assurance lab, machine shop, corporate office space, conference rooms, tasting area, a roof top deck and 4,800-square-feet of additional public events space. Georgia Senate Green Lights Brewpub Bill

The Georgia state senate has approved legislation that if past could be a big benefit for the state’s brewpubs.  The bill will double the amount of barrels a brewpub can sell from 5,000 to 10,000.  In addition, it will raise the limit of barrels that the brewpub can sell to distributors from a mere 500 to 5,000.    A huge bonus for brewpubs looking to sell outside their 4 walls.

House Bill 472 passed without any opposition.  Next stop for the bill is the Rules committee.

Terrapin’s Side Project #16: Phlux Capacitor

Dustin Watts from Terrapin showed me this last week. I couldn’t wait to finally get a hold of the artwork.  The brewery is on the cusp of releasing their next Side Project brew- Phlux Capacitor (any similarity with a movie living or dead is purely coincidental.)

Time traveling in at number 16 in our “Side Project” series of beers is “Phlux Capacitor.” This wood aged bully is brewed to an unknown style from another dimension.  Rumor has it that this beer was the first invented on planet Vulcan on Saturday, November 5, 1955 at 10:04 pm.  Scribbled on the back of a sports almanac inside an abandoned Delorean.  It is said that the speedometer in the car was frozen at 88 miles per hour and it took 1.21 gigawatts of power to jumpstart the car back to the future.  We hope you enjoy our interpretation of this totally fictitious ale.

Style:
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft
Arrival: Late March, 2012

9.8% ABV, 88 IBUs (They were aiming for 12.1% (1.21 gigawatts!!! looks like it’s a little lower)

Terrapin To Release Special Anniversary Ale

Terrapin Anniversary AleTerrapin Beer Co celebrates 10 years in April, 2012.  As promised by the brewery, the label contains a mathematical equation.  The guy you see there is Leonard Euler, and his equation,  Euler’s Identity.   Many mathematically inclined tout his identity equation as one of the most beautiful in the world.  Beautiful?  Totally.  Euler’s Identity combines 5 math constants, and 3 arithmetic operations.  It’s pretty fascinating if you’re into that kind of thing.  (Don’t worry, you don’t have to do the math as you can see.)

Here’s the beer equation: Chouffe yeast, coriander, 2 types of orange peel, chamomile, nelson sauvin hops.  You’ll see it around Terrapin’s Carnival time.

Style:
Hops: Nelson Sauvin
Availability: 22 oz bombers
Arrival:

9.969% ABV

The quote on the label is actually by Benjamin Pierce, speaking about Euler’s Identity.   The actually equation looks like this.  The gif below demonstrates the equation.

It is absolutely paradoxical; we cannot understand it, and we don’t know what it means, but we have proved it, and therefore we know it must be the truth.
