VID: Delaware Native Ale Uses States 1st Honorary Yeast Strain

Delaware now has an honorary yeast strain.  As you can probably imagine, it has something to do with Sam Calagione and Dogfish Head.

Calagione wanted to create a true Delaware state collaboration.

“Wouldn’t it be neat if in Delaware, we put together a project that celebrates how well all these different communities do work together here in Delaware,” he said he thought at the time. “Maybe in some small symbolic way, we can show that the communities can work well together, even at a time in D.C. when that really wasn’t happening.

So, he went to work.  The beer is called Delaware Native Ale.  It is a collaboration between Dogfish Head, Abbott’s Mill in Milford, Fifer Orchards in Wyoming (Delaware), the University Of Delaware (GO BLUE HENS!) and the Delaware State government.

Abbott’s Mill hasn’t been used for nearly 50 years, milling over 400 pounds of barley.  Fifer Orchards and Calagione collected fruit flies to help carry the wild yeast strain.  Yeast DNA was sequenced at U of D. The orchard also provided peaches and pears for the brew.  DFH employee Chad Collier even provided some homegrown hops to DNA.

Honorary Yeast?

The yeast – dubbed DNA KA1, was made the states honorary strain by the Delaware Governor, Jack Markell in recent announcement about Delaware Native Ale.

Availability:  Delaware Native Ale will be on tap solely at the Rehobeth Beach Brewpub, tapping for the first time on Halloween.

Carb Issues For Hiveranno

Odell’s New American Wild re-release is going to be a bit different than expected.  The beer sat for too long in the tanks trying to bubble and bottles will not be released outside of the brewery.  Not all of the bottles are properly carbonated and rather than risk someone purchasing a flat beer, they have decided to keep the Wild Ale in house as opposed to dumping all of it.  If you are lucky enough to live close to the brewery, swing on by and give it a try, if the bottle is flat, they will dump it and open a new one.

Goose Island Rolling Out Blackberry, Raspberry Dominique

Goose Island Brewing is adding some flavor variations to Dominique, and American Wild Ale.  Dominique is a bit of Belgian meets bourbon sexiness, as this sour ale is aged in bourbon county stout barrels.

Goose is adding variations to the Dominique line, by adding Blackberries and Raspberry editions.  (Draft only, currently.)

Also, expect more of

Mae – Brewed with Saison and farmhouse ales of Belgium in mind, we added fresh Mick Klug’s Michigan peaches and Brettanomyces claussenii to a fresh white wine barrel and aged the Saison base for 9 months. Stretching boundaries of the traditional style, we decided to put our own little spin on it.

Eva – Brewed with the Saison and Farmhouse ales of Belgium in mind, we added fresh Michigan cherries and Brettanomyces to a wine barrel and aged the Saison base for 9 months.

Indira – Brewed with Lemongrass and Lemon Thyme in the brew kettle, Indira brings the citrus of her cousin Sofie but from different sources. A dry citrus finish blends with spices of the yeast and thyme.

Bell’s Wild One Headed For Big Ones

Yet another Bell’s Brewing big bottle.  UPDATE: Eccentric Cafe Only releases for the 750ml bottles.

The Wild One is of course a wild ale, that comes from multiple blends.  Until these 750ml bottles, Wild One has been draft only.

Every batch of Wild One begins not as a single beer, but as more than 20 distinct batches fermented in wooden barrels, each with its own unique combination of wild yeasts & other microorganisms. After several months, the brewers then sample each of the barrels and blend to taste, selecting the desired flavor attributes from this array. The result is a refreshing tartness, supporting a heady fragrance of fruit, toasted oak, & vanilla.

Availability: 750ml bombers yet to be determined.
