Ommegang Gets Wild At Heart

Brewery Ommegang has been on fire lately. The second beer in the Game of Thrones series broke the internet this week, so let’s keep the trend alive shall we? A new wild ale is on the horizon from the Cooperstown, NY brewery. Wild At Heart features the funky and popular brettanomyces yeast.

Wild At Heart is an audacious new ale in our brewer’s obsession series. In a rarely-employed technique we use only wild brettanomyces yeast in primary fermentation – the very heart of the beer. The brett yeast imparts robust fruit flavors and aromas, and combines with Motueka  and topaz hops to create uncommon tastes and aromas, Wild at Heart pours a rich amber hue with a full white head. Aromas include mango, pineapple, and passion fruit. Complex flavors present a touch of tartness, carefully balanced with gentle malt sweetness and subtle hop bitterness. For enhanced tartness, simply let the beer age.

Style: American Wild Ale
Availability: 750 ml bottles
Arrival: TBA

8% ABV

Brooklyn Wild Streak

Brooklyn Brewery (New York) recently retired Monster, their epic barleywine ale. After the cat for which the beer was named passed, the brewery thought the time was right. Plus, they wanted to make a little room for some new things. Meet one of the new things- Brooklyn Wild Streak. Streak is Belgian stylegolden ale that got a little funky with brettanomyces yeast, only to find itself aged in a bourbon barrel.

There was a time when all beers were aged in wood, and yeasts ran wild and cavorted together. Modern brewing is wonderful, but sometimes a little cavorting is a fine thing. Brooklyn Wild Streak is our barrel-aged Belgian-inspired golden ale enlivened by the earthy funk of the wild yeast called Brettanomyces. It’s particularly great with cheeses and game meats. Oh, go ahead. You know you want to.

Style: American Wild Ale (Barrel Aged, Bourbon)
Availability: 750 ml bottles, Corked & Caged
Arrival: Released, late 2013.

9% ABV

Avery Barrel Aged #16: Ross’s’s’ Melange

Avery Ross's's' Melange Barrel Aged Wild Ale

There has been a lot of activity in Avery Brewing’s Barrel Aged Series. This month Volunt Plus Erat was released, and in a few weeks Momi Hiwi. Number 16 in the series will be Ross’s’s Melange. This wild ale is brewed with grape must, aged in Chardonnay barrels, with a blend of champagne and brettanomyces yeasts. Apparently brewed for eternal optimist, Ross.

No. 16. And we quote: Ugghhh…. You think you’re having a bad day, try having a bad life! The ocean is so boring you might as well be looking at the sky. All three of my bikes are at the brewery and I haven’t had water in three days. The best think about being a pessimist is getting to prove an optimist wrong. Life will be easier when I’m dead.

Style: American Wild Ales (w/ Grape Must. Wine Barrel Aged. Chardonnay)
Availability: 12oz bottles
Arrival: TBA

7.89% ABV
