Just because Surly Brewing (Brooklyn Center, MN) is building their dream destination brewery, doesn’t mean their new beer innovation slows down. This dislike of humankind creation is Surly Misanthrope, an American wild ale.

Simply put, just as the description states, Misanthrope is a Belgian-style beer aged in oak barrels with the wild yeast Brett.

This Belgian-style saison ale is aged in oak barrels with Brettanomyces. Golden in color, it has notes of tropical fruit wrapped in an oaky horse blanket, and, you know, other stuff that combine to produce blah blah blah to create blah and etc. It is best served cool and enjoyed alone or with a tolerated companion. 

Surly Misanthrope will be available in 750ml bottles.

Firestone Walker’s Barrelworks Drops a New One

Firestone Walker (Paso Robles, CA) will release a new offering from the Barrelworks on Saturday, July 12th.

Bretta Weisse, is a berliner weisse inspired wheat beer, that underwent secondary fermentation with amixed culture of brettanomyces and lactobacillus. Prior to bottling, the beer was aged 8 months in in 1,700-gallon French oak foeders. (Big wood vats.)

“Napoleon called Berliner Weisse the ‘Champagne of the North,’ but we’d like to think that Bretta Weisse would render him speechless,” said Barrelworks Director Jeffers Richardson.

Firestone Walker Bretta Weisse will be available in 500ml bottles, limited to 350 cases. The brewery is offering two pre-purchases sessions for the release, both sold out, unfortunately.

Jester King Detritivore Releases This Week

Jester King Brewery has a new offering arriving in the tasting room this week – Detritivore. The latest offering is brewed with the same cherries used another brewery release, Montmorency vs. Balaton. This method of using the fruits for a second time to ferment, give the beer a little more subtle flavor than when fermented fresh. La Vie en Rose and Atrial Rubicite are also “fruited” this way.

Also, Detritivore uses aged hops that Jester King matured in a nearby barn. The aged hops give the some barnyard and horse blanket flavors. The yeast is blend of saccharomyces, native wild yeast, and souring bacteria.

Almanac Plans Second Pumpkin Offering

Almanac Beer Co has one pumpkin offering on the books, Heirloom Pumpkin. The ale is aged in a blend of rye and brandy barrels. To be bottled in August, is a new fall offering – Almanac Dark Pumpkin Sour.

This new offering features the same heirloom pumpkins from Cali based Bodega Bay, that have been caramelized for a sweet taste that is a departure from Heirloom Pumpkin.

Autumn in California means changing colors, cooler evenings and festive meals celebrating the bountiful fall harvest. Aged in used wine barrels, the dark sour pumpkin beer is inspired by the season, merging roasted dark malts with the sweet flavors of caramelized heirloom pumpkins from Bodega Bay and a touch of pumpkin pie spice. Serve this complex ale alongside Mom’s classic pumpkin pie. 

Almanac Dark Pumpkin Sour is slated to be bottled in August.
