Wicked Weed’s “Funkatorium” Opens October 10th [VIDEO]

Wicked Weed Brewing (Asheville, NC) will open their second location you’ll come to know as the “Funkatorium” on Friday, October 10th. This new house of funk takes the sour and wild ales Wicked Weed has been creating to a full “wild” experience.

The Funkatorium will feature its own tap room with 16 taps and two hand pumps, showcasing Wicked Weed’s sour and farmhouse style ales. In the future, patrons will be able to purchase bottles from a special cellar list. Along side the funky beer lineup, food will be available on site, featuring different fare than found at the brewpub nearby.

…We want drinkers to come to the Funkatorium to see and touch the barrels, learn the smell of a wood cellar and really become intimate with this amazing style of beer. I can’t think of anywhere else on the East Coast where people can enjoy 16 different brett or sour beers while gazing at the 500 barrels from which those beers came.” Walt Dickinson, Head of Brewing Operations

Above is a Beer Street Journal exclusive video preview of the Funkatorium with Wicked Weed’s Abby Dickinson. Find the Funkatorium on 147 Coxe Avenue in Downtown Asheville.

Jester King Omniscience & Proselytism Blend 2 Releases Oct 8

Jester King Brewery (Austin, TX) will release bottles of their second blend of Omniscience & Proselytism wild ale on October 10th, 2014. This is the second release of the beer.

The brewery matured sour/wild beer in oak for a few months, the transferred it to a foudre filled with fresh Oregon raspberries. (Last release was Texas strawberries.) The wild yeast and bacteria re-fermented the sugars from the berries, drying out the final beer. The fruit is fermented the same way wine grapes fermented.

Jester King Omniscience & Proselytism Blend 2 (2014) will be available by the bottle at the brewery starting Friday, October 10th. $16 dollars, one per person.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Strawberries. Oak Aged.)
Availability: 500ml Bottles

5.3% ABV

Stone Launches Enjoy After 10.31.15

As a flipside to Stone Brewing Co.’s Enjoy By Series, the brewery has launched a new IPA you are supposed to cellar. Stone Enjoy After 10.31.15 is a IPA spiked with the wild yeast Brettanomyces, that will develop and carbonate the beer over time. You are buying a beer you’ll drink a year from the day you buy it.

…Ideally, you’ll want to cellar the beer up to-or beyond-the Enjoy After date to help it reach its full evolutionary potential. At that point, some facets of the Brett characteristics will have mellowed, while others will have become more profound; it all matures into a fascinating and delicious culmination. Individual results will vary…and that’s both the beauty and the intent behind this beer.

Stone Enjoy After 10.31.15 is available in limited 750ml bottles.

Style: American Wild Ale
Availability: 750ml Bottles. Limited
Distribution Area: TBA

7% ABV, 88 IBUs

From the Barrelworks: Firestone Walker Agrestic

Firestone Walker (Paso Robles, CA) will release a new wild ale from their Barrelworks on September 20th, Agrestic Red Wild Ale.

Agrestic is a spin on Firestone’s DBA British Pale Ale. It was racked (transferred to oak barrels on racks) with a blend of wild and sour bacteria and yeast.

The final blend that you’ll taste as Firestone Walker Agrestic are specially chosen lots of wild ale, ranging from eight to 24 months in French (87%) and American (13%) oak barrels.

Toasted oak and lemon pith swirl on the nose and palate, followed by harmonious notes of vanilla, coconut, Earl Grey tea and spice. The finish is crisp, with mouthwatering acidity and chewy tannins.

Firestone Walker Agrestic will release in 12.7oz bottles at both the Barrelworks and brewery in California.

Style: American Wild Ale (Oak Aged)
    Availability: 12.7oz Bottles
    Arrival: September 20th, 2014

    6.6% ABV

800 Bottles: Prairie/Evil Twin Coolship Truck

Prairie Artisan Ales and Evil Twin Brewing started this project late last year.

The two breweries co-brewed a new American wild ale, using a coolship on wheels (in a truck.) A coolship is a basically a shallow tub that allows for a lot of surface area exposure for hot wort. The wort cools overnight, while collecting airborne yeast that will spontaneously ferment the beer.

Last month, Prairie tweeted that around 800 bottles of Coolship Truck have made it into existence.

To the best of my knowledge, the bottles have not been released yet. There are some Untappd ratings from the tap room .

    Style: American Wild Ale
    Availability: 12oz Bottles, Draft. Limited.
    Release: TBA
