Recently, Sweetwater Brewing dedicated a 50 barrel tank (aka “Dank Tank”) to creating experimental beers. Beer’s that are completely different from their main production. The most recent release is a double IPA they named Medlin Double IPA.
First, for those who don’t know a lot about a DOUBLE IPA, its not just an IPA with a “doubled” recipe. The double IPA is born of West Coast ingenuity and ingredients. It is aggressively hopped as you would expect, however the yeasts that are used tend to be more “bland” or neutral allowing more of the hop flavor shine through. Simply, double IPA’s tend to have a stronger hop character.
With that said, back to Sweetwater’s Medlin. This double has more of a citrus tone to it, almost floral. It also finished much sweeter than expected. I enjoyed all 20 ounces I enjoyed at Taco Mac, and as much as I could handle at Dunwoody Beerfest. (Yes, Sweetwater brought it!)
This is currently not slated for bottle production so find it on draft while you can.
P.S. — I’m late writing this, so good luck finding it… but it IS out there…
