FDA Backs Down From Proposed Spent Grain Rule

Finally some sanity from the United States government. The Food and Drug Administration is backing down from the proposed spent grain rule restriction.

A proposed rule would require a brewery’s spent grain to be processed and packaged before going to the farmer for feed. The result would mean that a brewery would have to pay to package, or just throw away the spent grain (to a landfill).

The FDA’s deputy commissioner stated in a blog post that breweries “not only with human food safety requirements but also additional, redundant animal feed standards”.

Brewers across the United States can continue to give their spent grains to local farmers without issue. [FDA Statement]
