Laws surrounding alcohol are tricky bitches. Just ask Elevation Beer Co in Poncha Springs, Colorado. Elevation tells us there will be a small tweak to the upcoming berliner weisse aka Engel Weisse that will arrive later this month. The new release couldn’t be sold in liquor stores in Colorado if it’s 2.5% ABV. Why? The state has a law preventing it.
Colorado liquor stores cannot sell beer under 4%, stemming from an antiquated Prohibition-era law. Over the past few years, attempts at changing this legislation have failed. So, the Elevation crew went back into the brewhouse and created a stronger version. Welcome to 2013.
