Beer Street Journal Video: Back Forty Grows In Alabama

You take a turn off the highway in Alabama and drive for about 30 minutes. You’ll stumble across a town called Gadsden. The small town is home to Back Forty Brewing. What’s in a name? “Back Forty” is an old agricultural term referring to the 4o acres furthest from the barn. Typically the hardest land to maintain, due to it’s location. A bit like Alabama’s beer scene has been. Founder Jason Wilson, after seeing the beer culture of Colorado, wanted to bring that to the deep south.

The brewery started contract brewing with Lazy Magnolia in Kiln, Mississippi in 2009.  That lead to the first two releases – Naked Pig Pale Ale and Truck Stop Honey.  Truck Stop won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. The success of the those releases led to the brewery opening it’s own facility in an old warehouse from the 1940’s. Two more beers followed – Kudzu Porter and Freckle Belly IPA.

The brewery is now in the process of shipping to Atlanta, in March 2013. Plus, look for their first seasonal – Peach Wheat coming soon.

Beer Street Journal Video: Inside Terrapin’s New Brew House

Terrapin Beer Co (Athens, GA) is now brewing on a spiffy new 100 barrel Rolec brewhouse. Thats a big step up from the 25 barrel they have been brewing on. About a year ago, we had a chat with Terrapin founder John Cochran about the constraints with the brewery. At the time, the brewery was producing about 21,000 barrels (672,000 gallons) a year. The orders however, totaled more than 30,000 barrels. Not a bad position to be in.  Expansion was imminent.

Setting up for a big 2013, Terrapin is finally able to brew enough beer to meet the demand. Treehugger, and German style alt bier just promoted to year round status was the first beer brewed on the new equipment. Beer Street Journal tagged along with “Spike” on the brew day.

“The hop profile heavily features Mosaic and Calypso, bringing stone fruit flavors to the front seat. We’re talking peaches, apricots, things like that. Centennials are in there too, rounding out the aroma with a big citrus blast. Rampant also offers a sturdy malt backbone to balance the flavor in such wonderful way. It is a really great beer, like really great. Rampant leaves a hoppy zing in your mouth for a while after completion, and that’s a good thing, because it makes you want to drink another Rampant. “

Style: Imperial IPA
Arrival: March 4, 2013
Availability: 12 oz bottles

8.5% ABV

Beer Street Journal Video: Inside Yazoo’s Sour Program

Yazoo Brewing Company (Nashville, TN) has begun a full sour/wild beer program. One of the first of it’s kind in the southeast.

Using various red wine barrels, yeast from Cantillon bottles, even old Russian River Brewing barrels, Linus Hall and Brandon Jones (EmbraceTheFunk.com) have quite a few things at work. Beer Street Journal took a trip up to the brewery for more. The south just got funky.
