A Foul Ball, and Two Beer Spills [VIDEO]

A bit of chivalry gets rewarded with a beer to the head. At a recent Chicago Cubs game, the husband tried to protect his wife from a stray baseball. In doing so, he accidentally spilled beer on her. In the heat of the moment she returns the favor. Glad they have a sense of humor about it.

Beer Street Journal Video: Inside DuClaw’s New Brewery

I can only imagine the feel you get when you have such a demand for your beer that you have build a new brewery. That is… until you have to pay for it. Regardless, there is a good vibe surrounding Maryland’s DuClaw Brewing as they move into their new facility.

The old location is a mere 10,000 square feet, where the brewery housed their bottling line and brewhouse. They have completely maxed out production at 7,000 barrels (217,000 gallons) annually. The new digs you see in the video are a few miles down the road in Abingdon, in much larger 60,000 square foot facility. There, they can produce twice the amount of beer a year – 14,000 barrels (437,000 gallons) right from the start.

Now with some breathing room, DuClaw can fill distribution in their existing ship-to states – Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C.  Other markets are in the works, but nothing immediately planned.

First Look: New Belgium New TV Spots [VIDEO]

New Belgium (Ft Collins, CO) is launching a summer campaign dubbed “Pairs Well With People,” complete with Fat Tire focused tv spots. The idea is to capture a new generation of fans of the flagship beer. Skateboard legend-turned-documentary-film-director, Stacy Peralta (“Dogtown and Z Boys”, “Riding Giants”, “Bones Brigade”), directed the New Belgium staff in the  :30-second broadcast spots. (Available below.)

“We believe there is huge opportunity to introduce beer drinkers to the friendly shores of the craft brewing community and to New Belgium and Fat Tire as well,” said New Belgium Brewing Branding Director, Josh Holmstrom. “There is such a wide variety of new and interesting media to engage with them including social, mobile and Digital Video.”

The spots were filmed over the course of 3 days in Ft. Collins, and features music of the March Fourth Marching Band. The campaign has a strong social element too, including a Facebook App that will allow uses to insert photos into New Belgium themed frames. Users will be entered in a drawing to win the infamous New Belgium cruiser bike. Look for promotions on Twitter and Instagram too.

The “Pairs Well With People” campaign will run through Labor Day, 2013. [Full Details]

Empty Beer Can Campaign Encourages People To Not Drink & Drive [VIDEO]

It is actually a pretty brilliant campaign to get Rio De Janeiro Festival goers to take mass transit. Antarctica Beer (official festival sponsors) created a special turnstile that scanned their beer can turning it into a mass transit fare. Empty beer can = subway ticket. It worked too. The beer turnstile got about 1,000 cans per hour. Drunk drivers caught, down 43%. That might be a good move for breweries stateside? Assuming the police don’t arrest you for having an open container.

This Is How You Dry Hop (Not Hump) [VIDEO]

So you’re not a brewer, but you’re interested, right? From the mouths of the brewer- this is dry-hopping. When you add hops to the boiling beer, you bitter it. When you add hops after, you give beer more hop aroma, without added bitterness. See the process in action.
