Here We Grow Again!

You may have heard through the grapevine, that we have started our expansion.  We owe a great deal of gratitude to all of our fans.  It’s your appreciation for what we are doing here in Mississippi that is letting us brew more beer.  Nobody believed us when we said Mississippians were ready for Craft Beer.  We appreciate you helping to prove all of “them” wrong!
Our real expansion plans will start this December and continue through next year.  We have two big projects: building a new structure for our facility (more than double our current size) and installing a single brew house with twice the capacity of the 2 we currently use.  The new space, in addition to improving our production process, will also allow us to give improved brewery tours.  Those of you that have been here for a tour know how much fun they are now!

We are excited about how much better with our new Brewery Experience Center and we are working on a new history project that will be the new tour’s focal point.
The new brew-house is going to not only help us make more beer, but better beer! Once installed, we will can finally start creating beers we have never enjoyed the opportunity brew, expanding on our currently brands for all you fans out there.  With the increase in production there will also be job opportunities, and we are always looking for great people to join our team.  Be sure to keep an eye out for job postings on our website over the next year.

PR: Newcastle Winter IPA Seasonal

WARM UP WITH WINTER IPA FROM NEWCASTLE BROWN ALE

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — November 2, 2011 — Newcastle Brown Ale, brewer of the legendary “One & Only,” today announced the launch of Winter IPA, the newest offering in its Limited Edition series. Following the successful Newcastle Werewolf, Newcastle Winter IPA is now available to adults at select retailers and pubs.

Newcastle Winter IPA stays true to the original, subtly hopped recipes of traditional 18th century India Pale Ales, maintaining the drinkability that Newcastle enthusiasts 21 and over have come to expect.

Marked by a strong hop aroma and a zesty character with hints of malt, Winter IPA features just a touch of sweetness to offer a delicate and creamy mouthfeel. Pouring a seductive copper color, the brew offers subtle caramel notes, a full body and a balanced finish.

“Newcastle Brown Ale has a rich history of carefully crafted and highly drinkable beers, and our partnership with the Caledonian Brewery for the Limited Edition series continues this tradition,” said Charles van Es, brand director Newcastle Brown Ale. “From the authentic recipe to the small batch brewing in open copper kettles, everything about our Winter IPA is a salute to original British IPAs. It’s our way of helping make the long winter months a little more palatable.”

Made with Super Styrian and Styrian Goldings hops, Newcastle’s Limited Edition Winter IPA has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 5.2 percent with 28 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Newcastle Winter IPA will be available at select markets across the country in 6-pack and 12-pack bottles priced comparably to Newcastle Brown Ale, as well as on draught at fine pubs from Nov. 2011 through Jan. 2012.

Somerville Brewing Company Opens

(Somerville, MA) — It’s exciting times for the fervent craft beer scene in the Northeast as the new Somerville Brewing Company proudly announces its launch of brewing operations. The new brewery is producing draft and 22 oz. bottles of its beer under the Slumbrew brand. Each beer is the result of extensive refinement and is designed to challenge preconceptions of standardized beer styles while making use of the highest quality ingredients. The first beers shipped during the week of October 24th and were very warmly received by an enthusiastic community of craft beer fans.

The brewing project is the culmination of over two years of preparation by founders Caitlin Jewell and Jeff Leiter. During the startup phase, Caitlin and Jeff did extensive travel and research on some of the most successful and innovative breweries around the country.

“We did over 10,000 miles of travel each year for several years in order to visit breweries and talk with brewers and patrons alike on what motivates them about the craft beer movement. It was a lot of fun, we met tons of great people and the experience really informed our approach to the Slumbrew beers and community we would like to help create,” said Caitlin who heads up Somerville Brewing’s marketing, events and promotion initiatives.

Critical to the launch of the brewery was the 350 sq. ft. nano-sized brewery that Caitlin and Jeff built in a small structure on their property in Somerville over the course of seven months in 2009. Building on ten years of home brewing experience, Jeff utilized this small brewery to develop and refine all of the recipes for Slumbrew.

“The Brewlab, as we call it, was really key to developing recipes unlike a lot of other mainstream beers since it allowed me to experiment with many different ingredients and techniques. The nano size provided great flexibility in what I could do and yet a dedicated brewing space with scaled-down professional equipment allowed very repeatable processes. This made for an opportunity to develop original beers that could be scaled up to commercial sizes when the time was right,” said Jeff, who is responsible for the production brewing, recipe development and procurement of all ingredients.

The first beers to be released as Slumbrew are Flagraiser IPA — a hoppy IPA dedicated to one of the first Grand Union flag raisings atop Prospect Hill in Somerville; Happy Sol — a hefeweizen brewed with local MA honey, coriander, orange peel and over 1,000 blood oranges; and Porter Square Porter — a malty chocolate porter brewed with cocoa powder and conditioned with cacao nibs from the local Taza Chocolate company. Other beers are currently in the R&D phase and will be released in early 2012 as they are perfected in order to round out a diverse and eclectic family of beer styles.

The Slumbrew brand name for the line of beers is an important part of Somerville Brewing Company’s concept. Each beer aims to be a world-class, innovative expression, yet understated and using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. The name is a snarky throwback to the term ‘Slummerville’ because, as with the relationship between craft beer and large macro beers of the last century, the modern city of Somerville is nothing like its former days.

“Somerville is an incredibly vibrant place in its people, culture, businesses, food and beer. The best way to put the old term behind us as a community is to juxtapose its historical sense with the exciting new future of Somerville. For us, the name Slumbrew embodies a forward thinking enterprise to make exceptional beer with roots in a storied past,” said Jeff in describing the inspiration for the company.

Somerville Brewing Company maintains a business and operational office in Somerville near Teele Square, but don’t come looking for a tasting room just yet. The actual brewing is done similar to a lot of gypsy brewers in the US where the head brewer works with other larger and established breweries to produce batch sizes needed for commercial release. Jeff is currently brewing at Mercury Brewing in Ipswich, MA where he supplies all of the specialty ingredients for each brew day and is constantly monitoring the cellaring and production of finished products. The bottles and kegs are then distributed through Arborway Imports in Burlington, MA. A local Somerville presence with a tasting room is in the early planning phases but its timing is dependent on a multitude of local zoning and licensing factors.

The official launch party for Slumbrew will be held at The Independent restaurant and pub in Union Square on Friday, November 4 from 5-8pm where the first three beers will be available. This venue was chosen as it represents one of the leading beer bar establishments in Somerville and sits at the foot of Prospect Hill which is important to the story of Flagraiser IPA while also playing a significant role in the early history of the United States.

Coastal Extreme Brewing Co. Releases Newport Storm: Cyclone Series Sabrina

Newport, RI (Nov 2011) – A limited release ―Belgian Pale Ale, Cyclone Sabrina is the delightful offspring of two brewing worlds — Belgian and American. She was brewed in October on the second birthday of her namesake, Sabrina Ryan, daughter of one of Newport Storm‘s founders. Cyclone Sabrina (the beer) is quite simple up front (only pale malt was used) and relatively straight-forward without complicated hopping schedules. We chose to let the authentic Belgian yeast‘s attributes shine–with all its yummy carried phenols, bubble gum esters, and clove smells. A Cascade citrus background ties this beer to American Pale Ales without overshadowing the yeast‘s dominant profile. Lastly, this is our first unfiltered brew released at the new Newport Storm Brewery and is, like its namesake Cyclone Sabrina Ryan — beautifully unique.

Newport Storm‘s Cyclone Series of Limited Release Beers is the answer to craft beer lovers prayers. Named alphabetically like hurricanes, every few months a new, intense Cyclone hits the shelves, bringing a storm of unique flavor to your palette. Only 800 cases of each Cyclone beer is produced, the next beer in the alphabetical series being brewed once the previous one sells out. Each recipe is unique with a consistent commitment to every Cyclone‘ being an intense, assertive brew. Starting with Alyssa in 2006, the Series has proceeded down the alphabet alternating, girl boy girl boy, producing 19 unique brews to date. Gloria was a Pumpkin Ale, Luke was an India Red Ale, Elle was a Belgian Ale with hints of clove, while Isabel was simply hoppy and intense.

Coastal Extreme Brewing Company is Rhode Island’s Microbrewery, brewing Newport Storm beers since 1999. In spring of 2010 they built a new facility within the Newport city limits on JT Connell Rd. Their Visitors Center is open for tours and tastings from 12pm-5pm on Weekdays and Weekends (except Tuesdays). Newport Storm beers continue to be distributed throughout RI, MA and CT, with their beer lines including the flagship Newport Storm-Hurricane Amber Ale, Newport Storm- Rhode Island Blueberry, the Cyclone Series of limited release beers, the Storm of the Season beers, and the Annual Limited Release Series of bottle-conditioned beers. Their Summer Storm of the Season is available in kegs, cases, twelve-packs and six packs. Hurricane Amber Ale Cans are available in twelve packs in the summer months.

In 2006 they began the Newport Distilling Company, becoming the first distillers in Rhode Island in 135 years. Newport Distilling Company focuses on one signature spirit, Thomas Tew Single Barrel Rum, named after the famous Newport pirate. Thomas Tew Rum is an authentic aged pot still rum of the type that would have been made in Newport’s colonial rum heyday. Thomas Tew Rum is currently available for sale only in Rhode Island.

Blue Hills Brewery Announces Three Peak Holiday Stout

Canton, MA (November 2, 2011) – Blue Hills Brewery is pleased to announce the release of a new winter seasonal beer, Three Peak Holiday Stout, which will officially debut on International Stout Day (Thursday November 3rd, 2011).

Blue Hills Brewery draws inspiration from the natural world around us, and in this case, from the three rocky hills that overshadow the brewery in the nearby Blue Hills Reservation. We brewed this rich stout with a healthy dose of lactose, which gives it a tantalizingly smooth mouthfeel. During fermentation, we added light toast wood chips, which lend an earthy oak flavor and aroma. We hope that you enjoy our unique interpretation of a milk stout during this upcoming festive season.

Look for Three Peak Holiday Stout at fine stores and restaurants throughout Massachusetts, available in bombers, growlers, and on draft.

Alchemy & Science

(Burlington, VT) – Alan Newman, who founded Magic Hat Brewing in 1994, and Jim Koch, founder and brewer of The Boston Beer Company, have been friends and colleagues for more than 15 years. Recently, they met over a beer, and Jim urged Alan to return to the craft beer industry. They talked about how they might collaborate. Out of this came Alchemy & Science, a craft brew incubator headquartered in Burlington, Vermont, that will be funded by Boston Beer Company. Newman is joined in this venture by Stacey Steinmetz, his longtime business associate from Magic Hat.

“I see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Newman. “Stacey and I get to start with a blank piece of paper and a mission. Our job will be to find the opportunities in craft brewing – the blank spaces that exist. Some of those blank spaces will be geographical, others will be stylistic. Some may be with existing breweries or brewpubs. We’ll be looking for unique brewing techniques and ingredients as well as hunting for ancient or new recipes and beer styles to develop and introduce to beer lovers,” he concluded. Alchemy & Science will have the brewing talents and broad resources of Boston Beer available to them as they look for opportunities around the country.

“When Alan left Magic Hat in 2010, our industry lost a unique individual,” said Jim Koch. “He was a very creative brewer with real brand and business sense. We’ve kept in contact and recently, I asked what he was doing. He said he had no real interest in returning to craft brewing.”

“I asked if he would be open to working with us. The whole thing fell into place quickly. We talked about our vision for the venture and how to structure it. We decided Alchemy & Science should be a subsidiary of Boston Beer and that Alan should run it. I told him the mission should be to make great craft beer in any way, place or style that he thought made sense,” Koch added.
