Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream Expands (PR)

Samuel Adams’ Brewing the American Dream Expands Nationally

To Support Small Business Growth

2012 Goal Is To Double the Number of Food, Beverage, Hospitality and Craft Brew Businesses Receiving Funding/Coaching

BOSTON, MASS. ― APRIL 24, 2012 ― The Boston Beer Company today announced the national expansion of the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program. With a focus on helping small businesses related to food, beverage, craft brewing and hospitality, Brewing the American Dreamprovides loans and industry-specific coaching, mentoring, and educational resources to business owners who find it difficult to access the capital and guidance needed to sustain and grow their businesses.

While in the past only a handful of regions had access to the program, today’s national expansion of Brewing the American Dream will target at least $1 million in new loans, expanded for the first time to recipients across the country, with significantly increased access to its high-impact one-on-one mentoring and coaching activities. Additionally, the nationwide program includes the introduction of the new Brewing the American Dream Online Community, the first online resource to provide small business owners in the food, beverage, and hospitality sector with a comprehensive platform of tools to help their businesses succeed.

Working in partnership with Accion, the country’s only nationwide microlender, Brewing the American Dreamhas already provided more than $1 million in micro-financing to close to 150 businesses, and created or saved nearly 1,000 jobs.  Just as importantly, since it began a few years ago the program has offered one-on-one coaching and advised nearly 3,000 small business owners in the food, beverage, craft brewing, and hospitality industries throughout New England, New York, Chicago, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

Hands-On Education; An Exceptional Repayment Rate; and a Founder Rejected by Banks

“What differentiates Brewing the American Dream is the combination of loans and hands-on education,” said Jim Koch, brewer and founder of Samuel Adams.  “Working with Accion, we identify small business applicants who are often viewed as too risky by traditional banks — yet at the forefront of job creation and growth within their local communities — and where a relatively modest loan can have a meaningful impact. From there, we get down in the trenches with them through one-on-one mentoring and coaching to help them grow their businesses.”

Koch noted that a key indicator of the program’s success is the fact that it is reporting a default rate that’s low by micro lending standards and certainly well below other programs.

“I think a large part of the program’s success is due to our ability to offer in-depth expertise and advice that comes from living and breathing the food and beverage industry every day.  We understand the challenges because we’ve been there; I’ve been there. From being turned down by banks 28 years ago when I was just starting out and desperately needed funding, to figuring out how to distribute my product, I know firsthand what these small business owners are going through and sincerely believe that Brewing the American Dream can help them overcome many of their obstacles.”

More Coaching and an Online Community

As part of its national expansion in 2012, Brewing the American Dream will extend its speed coaching eventsinto Los Angeles, Denver, Washington, DC, San Diego and Austin. These events will also continue to be held throughout the year across New England, New York, Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati and eastern Pennsylvania.

Additionally, a key part of the program’s expansion involves the Brewing the American Dream Online Community. Designed to grow and expand with the program, it is the first online network for small business owners in the food and beverage industry to provide various educational resources such as video tutorials, interactive discussion boards and forums, etc. While some reference material will cover general small business education topics including managing finances and business planning, the site will also focus on offering specific insights related to the food and beverage sector such as food and beverage packaging guidelines, and strategies for product marketing and distribution.

Lending To Small Businesses Stalled

“The lending environment is still challenging for a lot of small businesses,” said Gina Harman, president and CEO of Accion’s U.S. Network. “In fact, a recent study[1] showed lending to small businesses has stalled and consequently small business growth may be slowing. The bottom line is that public-private partnerships that deliver real value to small business owners like Brewing the American Dream are needed now more than ever.”

Harman also confirmed the importance of the educational component of the program. “Since the Small Business Administration recently announced it will make cuts to its counseling and training programs that accompany microloans, it’s extremely important to have resources like Brewing the American Dream that can fill the education gap that’s so critical to small businesses success.”

About The Boston Beer Company

The Boston Beer Company began in 1984 with a generations-old family recipe that Founder and Brewer Jim Koch uncovered in his father’s attic. Inspired and unafraid to challenge conventional thinking about beer, Jim brought the recipe to life in his kitchen.  Pleased with the results of his work, Jim decided to sample his beer with bars in Boston in the hopes that drinkers would appreciate the complex, full-flavored beer he brewed fresh in America.  That beer was aptly named Samuel Adams Boston Lager, in recognition of one of our nation’s great founding fathers, a man of independent mind and spirit.  Little did Jim know at the time, Samuel Adams Boston Lager soon became a catalyst of the American craft beer revolution.

Today, The Boston Beer Company brews more than 30 styles of beer.  It relentlessly pursues the development of new styles and the perfection of classic beers by searching the world for the finest ingredients.  Using the traditional four vessel brewing process, the Company often takes extra steps like dry-hopping, barrel-aging and a secondary fermentation known as krausening.  The Company has also pioneered another revolution, the ‘extreme beer’ movement, where it seeks to challenge drinker’s perceptions of what beer can be. The Boston Beer Company has been committed to elevating the image of American craft beer by entering festivals and competitions around the globe, and in the past five years has won more awards in international beer competitions than any other brewery in the world. As an independent company, brewing quality beer remains its single focus. Although Samuel Adams beer is

America’s largest-selling craft beer, it accounts for only one percent of the U.S. beer market.  The Boston Beer Company will continue its independently-minded quest to brew great beer and to advocate for the growth of craft beer across America. About Accion

In seeking a partner for Samuel Adams’ Brewing the American Dream the company turned to Accion to facilitate lending to hardworking business owners seeking to grow. Since 1991, Accion has built the largest microfinance network in the U.S., comprised of five members, that have collectively provided loans and support to over 500,000 enterprising individuals. Accion provides affordable financing and support to everyday businesses, establishing a relationship with each customer and considers personal character alongside credit history in its lending process. Each Accion loan–which averages $7,500–fuels the creation and retention of more than two jobs, extending the organization’s impact beyond the borrower’s business to the community as a whole. New in Spring 2012 . . .

ALASKAN ROUGH DRAFT EXPORT SERIES:
A SHOWCASE OF ALASKAN’S BEST SMALL BATCH BREWS

Alaskan Brewing has a unique research and development process for new recipes where anyone in the company can work with a brewer develop and brew a recipe on the 1-barrel pilot brew system with free reign to wander far away from traditional styles, ingredients and processes. For years, the favorites ofthese experimental recipes have been shared only in very limited draft releases – or “Rough Drafts” – with those lucky enough to live and imbibe in our home state of Alaska.

But now, Alaskan Brewing is “exporting” a selection of the best of these brews to taps outside of Alaska through the draft-only Rough Draft Export Series!

Alaskan is kicking of this new draft-only series with Alaskan Freeride APA, a floral, fruity and citrusy American Pale Ale that showcases the aroma and flavors of Citra, Centennial and Cascade hops with just enough malt backing to balance. Freeride features a lush green and almost tropical hop aroma paired with the unique taste combination of these three distinctive hop varieties, making it both full of flavor and crisply thirst-quenching.

Alaskan Freeride APA Brewer’s Notes:
First brewed on Alaskan’s pilot system in early 2011, Alaskan Freeride APA is a local Rough Draft Limited favorite and the perfect beer to launch the new Rough Draft Export series based on the Brew Crew’s picks. This refreshing and flavorful American Pale Ale is a springtime staple for Alaskan’s backcountry skiing and snowboarding crew as well as a perfect beer to savor on summertime kayaking and biking adventures. A medium maltiness lays down the tracks while a hoppy trifecta of Pacific Northwest hops used heavily in the boil and in dry-hopping amp up the unique combination of green, citrus and exotic fruit flavors.

Look for the Alaskan Rough Draft Export Freeride APA on draft in select locations this spring and summer throughout the Pacific Northwest, and check back here for news on which Export recipe is heading south next!

Woodchuck Amber Coming To Cans (PR)

(Middlebury, VT) — Woodchuck Hard Cider’s flagship Amber is coming to cans.  Our fans said they wanted it, and we like to listen to our fans.

In a matter of months, Woodchuck’s CAN-do attitude brought it from brainstorm to final product.  You asked for it… you got it.

  • A Cask Canning Line System was brought into our Middlebury Cidery.
  • A custom made 4,650 gallon Feldmeier Bright Beer Tank was purchased to feed cider to the line.
  • The quality control team went to work ensuring that the liquid in the can was of the highest quality and same great taste as in the bottle.
  • The production team assembled and trained on the new canning line.
  • The marketing team developed and executed the packaging.

The passion fans bring to Woodchuck drives its success.  That passion is worth investing in.  In fact, since the first cans came off the line, it has been running 24/7 to meet the initial demand we are seeing.

The weather is turning warmer.  So go forth… to the beach, to the golf course, to the campground… the Woodchuck Amber can is by your side.

Amber cans are already shipping, and will hit store shelves across the country in the coming weeks.  The 12oz cans are available in 12 packs only.  The suggested retail price is $14.99.

The can is recyclable, and redemption states remain the same as the bottle.  The full Woodchuck Hard Cider line will continue to be offered in bottles, just as it always has.

We are proud to bring the Amber can to consumers as Woodchuck continues to lead the cider category.  A category it first reinvented in 1991.

Alchemy & Science Creates House Of Shandy (PR)

(Burlington, VT) — Many years ago, a hip young European introduced a curious traveler to a bracingly different beer called the shandy. Memories of that citrus-infused beer prompted Alan Newman of Alchemy & Science to develop his own version, Curious Traveler.

When Newman, a creative serial entrepreneur and founder of Magic Hat Beer Company, discovered the treasures of Europe at mid-life, he was struck by the cloudy citrus-infused beer favored by the fashionable locals at the picturesque cafes and taverns. His new company, Alchemy & Science, draws upon that experience and memory to combine craft beer with lemons and limes into his first shandy. He named it after his alter ego, Curious Traveler.

The shandy tradition dates back to the 17th century and is typically beer mixed with a citrus-flavored soda or carbonated lemonade, ginger beer, ginger ale or cider. Today, English publicans pour a blend of traditional English ale with various lemon and lime beverages for their patrons though real lemons or limes are rarely used.

Curious Traveler is a fresh, bold, year-round, craft-brewed, all malt wheat ale infused with a puree of real lemons and limes. This shandy has a lively fruity flavor and a powerful “throw your head back’’ fresh lemon aroma. It will be available on tap in mid-April in a dozen initial markets: New Hampshire, Cape Cod, Rhode Island, the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Northeast Ohio, Indianapolis, Chicago, Minneapolis and Denver (visit HouseofShandy.com for details).

Curious Traveler is the first product of The House of Shandy Beer Company brewed by Alchemy & Science, the company Newman established. Alchemy & Science is an independently operating division of The Boston Beer Company. Last year, Newman’s longtime friend Jim Koch of The Boston Beer Company, coaxed Newman back into craft beer brewing and gave Newman a mandate to follow his muse and create original and ground breaking craft beers in any way, place or style he chose.

The beer label portrays the curious traveler, an inquisitive tourist from a bygone era eager to experience and explore the mysteries of foreign lands. Newman says that the distinctive thirst-quenching shandy rekindles memories of his first trip to Europe: buzzing down the autobahn; getting lost wandering the cobblestoned streets of European cities; lingering over a croissant at a Parisian café; and marveling at medieval cathedrals with stone steps worn smooth by the feet of other pilgrims.

“This beer mixes the great old European shandy tradition with good old American ingenuity,” said Newman. “Curious Traveler may not be the first or only shandy in America but we are committed to making it the best tasting shandy with a special recipe and the finest natural ingredients.”

This beer draws upon Newman’s practice, established when he founded Magic Hat, of using only the freshest and highest quality ingredients in an innovative, creative and uniquely American way.

Newman is working on a second shandy, Tenacious Travelerâ„¢, which should be available within six months.

Alchemy & Science is a craft beer collaboration led by Alan Newman and Stacey Steinmetz and supported by The Boston Beer Company. Its mission is to increase awareness of craft-brewed beers and support preservation of the craft. Still curious? Vine Street Pub Opens In House Brewery

(Denver, CO) — Vine Street Pub, the Denver branch of the famed Boulder-based Mountain Sun Brewery, announced the opening of its new 3,500 square foot in-house brewery. For the first time since the pub opened its doors four years ago, Vine Street will be able to serve house beers brewed on premise. The first beer brewed in the new state-of- the-art facility will be a yet-to-be named Belgian Trippel, which will be released this month. Longtime Mountain Sun Head Brewer, Brian Hutchinson will oversee the new brewery with Brewer John Fiorilli.

To celebrate the opening of the new brewery and its four-year anniversary in the Denver location, Vine Street Pub, will hold Vine Street’s Smokin’ Hot Anniversary Party— a community celebration where all proceeds benefit Denver’s Judi’s House (www.judishouse.org). Taking place Friday April 20, from 4:20 p.m. until close, the event will feature this year’s Mountain Sun anniversary special-release brew, the Capital Saison, Chef Annabelle Forrestal’s specialty BBQ offerings including smoked meats, burgers, and brats, and free live music from local musicians the “By All Means Band”. Great Divide , Ommegang and Green Flash Breweries will also be donating beer, which will be sold to support Judi’s House.

“We’re tremendously excited about the new brewery. We’ll be able to produce more beer, and more varieties,” said Mountain Sun founding owner Kevin J. Daly. “It also means fewer food miles — less driving from Boulder to Denver, which is good for the environment. We love the Earth, and the fact that Vine Street’s anniversary always lands around Earth Day.”

The third brewery in the Mountain Sun family of pubs, the Vine Street Brewery will be able to produce 5,000 barrels of Mountain Sun beer annually. Mountain Sun’s signatures FYIPA, Annapurna Amber, XXX Pale, Colorado Kind, Blackberry Wheat, and Quinns Golden Ale will all be brewed at the new location, as well as rotating specialty brews throughout the year.

“We expect to brew 3,000 barrels at Vine Street in our first year of production,” says Mountain Sun Head Brewer Brian Hutchinson. “This is an increase of beer for our loyal customer community as we currently brew a little over 3,000 barrels annually at the two Boulder breweries combined.”

The greatly expanded brewing capacity that Vine Street provides will allow Mountain Sun to pursue partnerships with other Colorado beer and food-focused establishments. Currently, the newly-opened The Kitchen Denver has Mountain Sun’s Hop Vivant on tap.

###
About Vine Street Pub: The third pub in the Mountain Sun family, Vine Street Pub— located at 17th and Vine in Denver’s Uptown neighborhood— opened April 14, 2008 to a standing-room-only crowd. As is the case at Mountain Sun and Southern Sun Brewpubs in Boulder, Vine Street features more than 20 taps of house brews and quality craft beers, award-winning all-natural pub fare, in a comfortable, living room-like atmosphere. Vine Street was just honored in Westword magazine as having “Best Wings” of 2012.

About Mountain Sun Pubs & Breweries: Founded by Kevin J. Daly in 1993, the original Mountain Sun Brewery, located in downtown Boulder, Colo., was the first Colorado-micro brewery to offer the comfortable brew-pub atmosphere and community gathering place that Daly fell in-love with when living in Portland, Oregon. A true traveler and music lover to the bone, Daly sought to create an establishment that was as comfortable as your living room, where great food, craft beers, and conversation flowed freely. With a commitment to high quality ingredients, earth-first practices, and employee participation, the uniquely eclectic atmosphere of Mountain Sun continued to expand. Southern Sun Pub & Brewery opened in Boulder, Colo. in 2002, and Vine Street Pub opened in Denver, Colo. in 2008. Mountain Sun Ales have won numerous awards around the globe, including six gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. In 2009, Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery’s Head Brewer Brian Hutchinson was crowned “Alpha King” with his Hop Vivant Imperial IPA (making Mountain Sun the first and only Colorado brewery to take the title.) This year, they won a silver medal for their Illusion Dweller IPA.
